Right. It’s gonna hit further west of Cape Lookout. Maybe even all the way over to Emerald Isle (city).

Well, let’s say, for the sake or argument that it’s double - a full 120 mph. Does anyone see that as toppling the Empire State Building?

Toppling? No
Sweeping the floors clean? perhaps...

And remember, this isn’t gusting, but sustained winds over a period of hours.

They didn’t release my husband from base until noon, and as I work as a civilian on base, I wasn’t released from my responsibility to report tomorrow until about an hour ago. Heck, they didn’t even cancel school today, and my kids didn’t get home until an hour ago themselves. There was no mandatory evacuation. The only friend I have that has left was a women who has horses and wanted to be sure she had a spot in Raleigh for them at the fairgrounds.

At the time of the Northridge earthquake, the neighbor was an electrician at the nearby prison; within an hour he did what was SOP - reported to work.

When he got home a few hours later, he told us that he was about the only one to show up - including the sheriff's deputies.

Now there was a storm.

I was only 3. Vague images of my family hunkered down in our (high) house, dad and brother bailing out the basement (sump pump stupid design). And later, a photograph memory of a broken record (33) in the middle of the creek (Tiber River) in Ellicott City by the RR station (which RR, BTW, had almost all the 2nd line taken out by this storm - forever).

That “little” storm probably did more permanent damage (change) than any.

I have to wonder how much of this media hysteria is really justified.

A few thoughts:

Yesterday--when the media excitement was kicking into high gear--the forecast indicated Irene would still be a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of New Jersey. Irene was expected to emerge from the NC Outer Banks intact as a Category 3 storm.

Second, The areas in the forecast track are experiencing the highest tides of the year right now. If the storm surge occurs at high tide, it adds several more feet of water to storm surge totals.

Third, the Northern Seaboard has been inundated with significant floods and rain already in the past several days. The ground is already saturated before the first rain band from Irene arrives. Many trees will be uprooted when the winds kick up from Irene.

Finally, there is a big difference between a wind gust and sustained hurricane winds. For a storm of this size, sustained winds will last for substantially longer than 24 hours (tropical storm force winds extend 290 miles from the center, presume 20 mph forward speed).

Enough with all the glib dismissals. You all are bordering on arrogant and cruel.

Funny you bring up Katrina and then the next statement is “East Coast bias”. BS. We weren’t innundated with Katrina stuff for ages? How about your earthquakes? You don’t think there’s much coverage? Phooey on you. What a bunch of nonsense.

You really think rain and 60 mph wind is nothing?

Look up Agnes. You can’t get much worse than that “wimpy” storm.

60 mph winds are nothing in NYC. We have blizzards practically every other year, endless nor’easters that wreck havoc and shake the buildings, so I am not concerned about my little apt. in NYC.

Now if the hurricane is as bad as the hysterical newscasters say, I suppose it’s the end of the world.

I planted 12 as well (Beefsteak, Early Girl and Brandywine). I've picked about 6 this week for salsa and gave another 4 away so still have about 25 left that need to be made a sauce out of or they'll rot. I have I'm guessing about another 20 or so looking pink and over 50 still green plus more tiny green ones and more flowering. I've averaged about 25-40 the past two weeks and have been able to keep up with it, but wanted to get most of them the end of the season for canning as I love to can in the fall. This is my first time planting tomatoes so don't know what good yields are and only three of my plants got over 5 feet and the others are under that so that may explain why I'm not getting as many as I should.

Do you can your tomatoes whole or do you make a sauce out of them and then can? Just wondering as this is my 1st year canning tomatoes.

The wind isn’t as big a problem as the rain and surge will be around NYC. Yeah, they may well get hit with borderline hurricane winds in some areas depending on the storm track, and there will be minor structural damage and broken windows and endless pictures of flapping street signs and ripped awnings.

But Irene will also push several feet of water up from Jamaica Bay and Long Island Sound and the Hudson and East Rivers into low-lying areas, in addition to a possible 8-12” of rain on top of a fairly wet summer. No, it’s not going to be the end-of-the-world scenario that the media is hyping. But you’re probably looking at widespread loss of power and disruption of transport due to bridges being closed and subways being knocked out or flooded, in a city of 5+ million people. They’re overreacting, because that’s the media and it’s what they do. But I seriously doubt it’s going to be pleasant or fun up there if Irene gets anywhere close to NYC, which it probably will.

Nice to know I got a refill on cartridges from my dad.

But I really doubt where we are we’d have any “looting”, much less real damage. Although I must admit I’m actually 50/50 about it. I’m just glad my nephew came home from Ocean City on his own recognizance before they made evac mandatory. (Sorry for the tangents...!)

I doubt there will be looters on Madison and mid-town 5th Avenue where the stores you hint at (Harry Winston, I suppose, Tiffany's) are located. It's basically a nonresidential area and the people who DO live there are very wealthy, indeed.

They are shutting down the subways so I doubt inner city hoodlums are waiting to invade. (Oddly enough, I've never heard of an inner-city hoodlum robbing Harry Winston's!) Now if the apocalypse DOES happen, looters will probably rob their own neighborhoods. That, sadly, now happens in every American city.

We usually make sauce out of all of them. My wife and I love homemade pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, and salsa!

One thing you can do is get a vacuum sealer and cut up and seal some tomatoes till you have enough for a batch. They won't keep like canned tomatoes, but they will keep for a week or more better than just on the counter top.

I sat in my car for my lunch hour, as usual, to listen to my talk radio and there was bloomturd and the rest going on and on. Reporters kept asking the same damn questions (he got a little testy).

I was in a panic (I’m on Long Island), but after NYC’s press conference I started getting ticked off. It’s like they are trying to cause a panic on purpose!

I survived Hurricane Gloria in 85, here on the Island and that was a Cat 4.

By the time this thing reaches us, it will probably be a 1 or 2. I think we’ve have a few recent thunderstorms that were probably a 1 or 2, lol.
