Crazy. How ‘bout the one reporting at water’s edge (forget which state) when a huge wave dumps over him; then, it was discovered there was a sewage breech. And he’s standing there covered in a yucky foam .....still reporting .. euwwww.

Ok last update of the night (morning?) and I’m going to bed. Winds are still up a bit; 35mph gusting to 46mph latest update from NAS Patuxent River. Quiet here, we still have power (for now) but I think the worst is over for us. Prayers for everyone who has been affected/is going to be affected by Irene.

I’m starting to fade as well, but had a craving for watermelon and now I’m a total sticky mess - but it’s so good!

It’s done with us as far as I can tell. there is a nice breeze and the crickets are chirping. I’ll worry about what all the rain did come daylight. Not going to worry about what I can’t see.

Stu Ostro: The water level is rising at The Battery at the southern tip of Lower Manhattan. The green line indicates it’s rising toward 3’ above normal astronomical levels. ... This will be something to monitor closely.

I'll say. Lower Manhattan is just a few feet above the water line. If storm surge causes Lower Manhattan to flood, all that water goes right into the subway tunnels, which will make a HELL of a mess.

"Just now joining this thread. My family has turned in but I can’t sleep. I’m in Central New Jersey in the Raritan river valley with clay soil and the rain is unrelenting. No wind."

Welcome. My husband turned in, but I can't sleep either. Our 15 year old has agreed not to sleep upstairs tonight, but I don't think he'll be sleeping much anywhere. We're in Montgomery County PA, north of Philadelphia. 11 hours of rain, worry about our towering trees and checking on our creek . . . it's wearying. No big wind here-yet. Still have power. If winds kick up that will likely change.

There might not be a 30 ft seawall coming, but everything on the east coast got the dirty side of the storm, surge wise. Winds on land aren’t that high, but if you know anything you know that doesn’t mean much. There is going to be a lot of flooding

Your street?

Hope all is OK.

Doesn’t matter if it’s south or north, a hurricane, hours and hours of relentless rain and wind, pounding surf .. it’s an extremely unpredictable, stressful, anxious time. Doesn’t have to be a Cat 3 or 4.

Flooding waters/wind damage can be and in many cases, I’m sure, probably will be devastating, and cause much damage and loss. It hurts, and rebuilding and restoring are really stressful and especially tough in these hard economic times when so many millions are already struggling and suffering.

The one positive that may result is that folks are forced
to realize that events can occur that are totally out of our control and expectations, and how prudent and wise it is to try stock up and have some elementary preparations in storage on hand, as much as they can.

Who knows what’s coming next to surprise us, especially with the current political landscape and the vicious overlords and radicals in our midst?

Gonna try to turn in.

Prayers for God’s blessings of protection for all in harm’s way. May the morning bring some welcome relief and the strength to deal with the effects of this dark night of worry.

But I do hope you don’t suffer power and water issues that can be awful...hot like this

I remember one hurricane, sometime in the mid-80's... I think it was only a TS at the time... but it was really, really weird. I kept looking outside and the carport area, kitchen doors, windows were absolutely covered with zillions of big bees (looked like large honey bees). It was the strangest thing I've ever seen... something out of a Hitchcock movie or something.

The next day the driveway was completely littered with bee bodies... just everywhere. Really strange.

My guess was that some swarm got swept up in the wind from somewhere and just happened to get dumped on my property.

Overblown is in the eye of the beholder. Camille was only as bad as where you were when it hit, and it was bad. This one was no Camille but it is going up the entire eastern seaboard with the dirty side. Camille didn’t cover such a large area with storm surge. A hurricane hitting the Gulf coast west to east like this would cause enormous damage even at cat 1

Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama shut down during the spring tornado outbreak. It was supposed to in that situation. I would think that is probably the case here

I think you’re really replying to the wrong person.

I’m the one who made the comment about the “my hurricane was bigger than yours” and that was what sageb1 was commenting about.

It really doesn’t matter who are what others have been through when others are going through something different - unless you are offering information on how to make getting through one easier or help in cleaning up afterward. Taht was what my comment was referring to..

I was one of the lucky ones today, I only put up with 23 hours of wind and rain and don’t believe I have any damage, but won’t know until after daybreak, but others weren’t quite so lucky and still others are still dealing with it.

When it’s over the one upmanship is fine, but not when people are still in the middle of it.

My bf’s family lost power about 1:15 am EST..in Howard Co...they hadn’t been getting too much wind though quite a bit of rain...guess a gust finally felled a loosened tree onto some lines. Not too surprised with eye now basically parallel.

The dam situation in south MD is sounding pretty bad. Really really hope it is able to hold.

CNN started to mention that. Then the reporters got cut off, and the station went to a “Break”. When they came back they told about it, and actually admitted that they did not know if they could run with the story. They basically admitted that the news is censored.

CNN being over dramatic most likely.. The explanation at Browns Ferry Nuclear plant during the Alabama tornado outbreak was there was nowhere for the power to go and it shut down automatic
