Is Irene still classified as a Hurricane? In all seriousness hope all is safe up there..this seems to be a dreadful event.

Hope no one decided to ride out this storm; anyone in its path should evacuate to an Obama shelter.

Any reports of loss of life?

I have lots of camping gear, moved 3 propane lanterns and a propane cook stove into the house, and sanitized and filled my 4 water jugs to have 22 gallons of clean water.

thanks for update NN. Haven’t been able to sleep much. Not that this storm impacts me directly but just worried about so many of you out there.

I haven’t had TV on once. Dont have cable/dish , but from what many of you said, perhaps that is a blessing with the juggling balance between important coverage & mania.

Keep looking at all the maps & data (which I have no clue how to apply to forecasting)

Looking forward to sunrise & some updates from FReepers who still have the ability to communicate.

I always worry about the pets and the livestock in various areas. Seeing pix of dogs chained to a doghouse on a very short chain is heartbreaking. Big floods & they have no chance.

Prayers continue for you all in safety as you clean up & dig out in many cases.

cable is out but power is on. Dog won`t go out except fast pee breaks. Many shelters are accepting pets this time. So far, almost 24 hours straight heavy rain.

Be careful if you go outside, if possible wear a hard hat.
Back around 1985 I think in Houston Texas we had a hurricane that came through, what happened was that on many of the downtown office buildings that were under construction there were materials that broke free and then went on a cascade effect of smashing all the high rise windows, there was literally piles of broken glass over 3 feet high on the streets.

I just woke up and I am watching the news, I don’t get any hurricanes here in Alaska but I have been in several when I lived in Texas many years ago.

I got this email from a friend in Philadelphia about 11:20 last night:

“We are under an area wide tornado alert. What is very bad is that this is at night....They just announced to get to a “safe room”, listen for transformers blowing and then try to see if there is a tornado (at night???!!!!! Are they nuts???!!!!!!!!!!!)

The rain is coming down so hard it is blinding...........we are getting 2 inches per hour and the storm sewers are flooded and filling the streets here........... You can’t go down the basement because of the flooding, and you can’t stay upstairs if you have a tornado..........So now what do you do?????

The banks of the rivers here are overflowing and they are evacuating people in the low-lying areas of Philly near the rivers. This is really bad. The winds are beginning to kick up now and we are being told that we could lose power from 1 to 2 weeks. The eye of the storm is now hitting Delaware, it will probably hit here in about 2 hours.”

Lost power at about 0445 EDT, back on by 0545 EDT, here in Northern NJ. (We are lucky in that respect, widespread outages all over.) Just got the geney going and basics (sump pump first!) hooked up when power was restored.

Irene should just be pulling just NE ACY about now, about 4 more hours until she gets to NY-LI. Rain fairly light but steady here, light wind, intermittent gusts here and there.

Stay safe all!!!

I don’t know about the Hudson, but I do understand not sleeping during a hurricane. Too many tornadoes and constant beeping on the weather channel. We do not even have basements here in Fla. and must hide in a bathroom or hallway from tornadoes.

Dominion Electric (VA) 973,000 customers without power.

First Energy (PA & NJ) maps have a message, "Outage information not currently available. Please try later."

Times like this I've learned to be very grateful that we can make a hot pot of coffee.

Not sure how long power will stay up, so much of surrounding areas are out, we're lucky at this point, hope that it sticks!

I haven't seen the rain gauge since I'm awake, I would estimate about 4-4.5" at this point. Did a walk around after getting geney hooked up and saw 2-3" ponding on low lying grass areas, other areas I walked across were fairly squishy underfoot.

I think I'll try to catch a wink or two, before I'm needed again!

Dear NautiNurse,

Here in Annapolis, it's still a little misty, not quite strong enough to be a drizzle. Still getting modest gusts of wind, but mostly just breezy.

My generator is still cranking, my sump pump is still pumping, my basement is still dry, and nearly half of Anne Arundel County, and about one-third of BGE’s Maryland customers are without electricity from the grid this morning.

I haven't looked around too closely, but a quick glance from the upper deck and from front windows reveals no obvious damage of any sort.

Thank You, God.

I'm sure glad I don't have to figure this storm out. Buoy # LLNR550 is a prime example. Its off Va. Bch. Last night between 8:50 and 9:50pm the winds were calm registered by the buoy. Barometer was 28.64. Seas were 20 feet indicating they were in the eye to me. An hour later when you would expect 80 knot sustained winds coming out of the eye it was far less-- 40.8,nothing computes for me,I don't get it.

Meteorology is indeed a complex science.

Dear NautiNurse,

Yes, it does. And it would be very noticeable very quickly, as lots of other stuff would come on that is currently off.

At this point, the generator is only partially installed. As I mentioned, the electricians working on our basement project installed it this week, but for them, it isn't a high priority. For me, on the other hand... So, they still need to come back and hook up one of the heat pumps and a few of the appliances. Right now, none of the major kitchen appliances, or the washer or dryer, are connected.

But we can unplug the microwave from its outlet and plug it into one of the functioning wall outlets in the kitchen, we can use the coffee maker, and the electric frying pan, as well. My wife anticipated the storm and cooked several days’ worth of meals that can be nuked, we can fry eggs, or we could even cook steaks if we wanted, the fridge is working fine, we have running water, working toilets, Internet, e-mail, TV... it's PARADISE!! LOL!!

I actually had the electrician out here yesterday, as the rain and wind was picking up, until about 4 pm, hooking up more stuff. Truly, I'm a slave-driver.

Well, I surveyed the property a little more closely. Other than some broken tree branches (we have a pretty good number of trees), and the fact that some parts of the yard could now officially be declared wetlands, no visible damage.

I don't know when we'll get our power back. But I went out and looked at the fuel guage, and I'm guessing that at the current rate of consumption, I'm using about a gallon of propane an hour, or even less, so I could hold out here without BGE for a week or more.

Loving your info about that generator! Have been looking at those for several years on and off. Have a solar pv setup here. Can run a small refrigerator and computers/electronics but not big enough for air conditioning, and that is very necessary in FL. How quiet is your system?

I'll bet your home was the bright spot on the horizon last night!

G'morning .. hope everyone's safe/dry and got a bit of sleep for whatever today has in store.

Central PA Irene periphery update 28aug 0700:

Tho this mess keeps rotating counterclockwise and feeding continuous rainclouds over the Susqhehanna Valley, it's also continuing to move slowly north.
The WunderMap has made it look like we should have been getting moderate rain since about 1800 yesterday.
But apart from a light off/on sprinkle and ~15-20mph breezes out here in the country this morning, it appears to have been relatively precipitation free overnight.
The actual effect re rain seems to be that it's been falling all along, but turns to humidity on the way down and then just hangs there like a tropical sweatsuit clinging to everything !

All the AGWbs aside, the bullet that this area has so far dodged re Irene will likely circle back around in a few months and shoot us in the ass with mountains of snow .. lol
There's still today to get thru of course .. the downpour threat won't pass til this evening, and the wind acts like it would love to gust up and scatter limbs all over.
Y'all will hear nary a peep from me about having gotten all the soakables up off the 'garden level' floor and shopvacs on standby to aid the sumps.
Awoke at 0600 to find power still on and 'net still up, both of which were even more welcome than finding no interior ponding ! Not having gotten the brunt of it that many of you are having to cope with, I'm looking at it as a general preparedness exercise for SHTF season next year.

My thoughts to all of you who've suffered propery damage and 'cane stress throughout, and best wishes for your cleanup exertions.
And that goes double to those of you still in the path of this thing.

Nurse, thanks again for your yeoman's efforts here !
Disruptors notwithstanding, this thread has been a comfort and a welcome/helpful distraction for many members, and prolly a fair number of lurkers too.

Checking in from suburban Philadelphia. It’s light out now, and I did a quick walk around the interior of the house. It’s still raining, but lightly. We’re up to 16 hours of rain now. Light breezes; no heavy winds so far. Limbs all over the yard, but nothing major that I can see from the windows. Forecast has been somewhat downgraded by NWS with top wind gusts down to 46 now. Once the family is up we’ll go out and check the creek and the trees. After Isobel we thought that all was OK until we checked the trees and found one had started to uproot and lean toward the house. Power is on.

7:22am. From high ground at the Jersey Shore - it’s just a lot of wind and rain, no damage at all except for some downed branches. My NYC friends who have facebook are not reporting any problems.

From local news it looks like the Asbury Park boardwalk is taking a small hit. The news is so hysterical I don’t know what to believe. But right now everything seems pretty mild.
