Dear NautiNurse,

Quiet - Not very. If you go outside, near the generator, it's quite loud. However, even though it's more or less right outside my bedroom window, from inside, it sounds like a background hum - not bad at all.

I'd been looking at this model for a few years. It's a GE 20KW with the Symphony transfer switch. It's not the new model - I saved nearly $500 by buying the model that is being discontinued. But it still has some basic load management features that will allow it to shed stuff to bring other stuff on-line, and then bring the stuff that was shed back on-line after things fire up and get through their initial surges.

I finally decided to buy it because my father wanted to come live with us from Florida, and so we needed to finish the basement for him, and thus, we can no longer tolerate periodic little (or occasionally big) floods in the basement. We can no longer tolerate loss of power to the sump pump. As well, he's old and infirm, and we can't have a situation as we had during multiple winters of having no heat, no water, no running toilets, and no way to get out of our driveway, no less over to the nearest hotel.

The whole installation, with the propane (which we're leasing the tank, not purchasing - saved $2400 that way) and everything - installation, inspections, etc., came to about $7000, not including the cost to fill the propane tank the first time (which was over $800, yikes!!).

It's still running, and I expect will be for a couple of days at least, and from here in the sunroom, which is on the other side of the house, I can hear a dull, low rumble of the generator.

Just outside Richmond here....to the west. Amazed we never lost power yesterday or last night. Lots of flashes, but that’s all. Surveyed our property this morning and there are no trees down, although there are many down in the neighborhood. Lots and lots of limbs down in our yard. Very grateful to be among the few to still have power in the area. It was an ugly day/evening.

JFK SE 39 gusting to 53 0850.

According to NOAA 0800, Irene should be at or near JFK right now. Hopefully, the wx. instrumentation @ JFK is very, very good. This suggests further weakening if it is accurate.

We were driving yesterday westbound on I-90 from Albany to Utica, and we passed at least 200 utility trucks with lifts, 50 flatbed trucks with backhoes on them, and about 100 plain white vans with logos that matched the utility trucks, going eastbound. This was just within one hour’s time. The electric cavalry, said Mr. RightField.

I have kind of had it with all this Government ‘hands on’ handling these weather fluctuations.

Great example of why we ‘need’ something of this sort.

Heard a Fire Chief/Spokesman warn people to NOT set up their gasoline generators in the house.
Then (without use the word if you are dumb enough) he cautioned if you should do something that foolish, definitely do NOT light off your grill in the same room.

Something tells me they had just returned from a fire or call with the above ‘problem’.

AND these idiots get the same vote as you and I - probably more if someone takes them to the different voting places...

We can all thank our Leader, nobama, for taking control of the National Weather Command Center after sacrificing the last day of his tenth vacation this year so as to save us. The best way we can do this for the Great One is to send a sizable contribution to his campaign so he can continue to protect us and allow us to bathe in his glory. All praise nobama, the All-Powerful.

We were headed to a camp in Bethel ME originally, and had spent 2 nights in VT waiting out the direction of the storm. Since we are in a motorhome, and with no friends or family in the area to help if we got into trouble, we decided to go back to Upstate New York to ride it out. The path of Irene still seems to being going directly over Bethel, so we feel we made the right decision to come back here. We are in Herkimer NY, and its raining steadily, but not hard, and no wind to speak of.

I just got an email from my friend in Philadelphia:

“Hi. My basement and garage are flooded and the winds are absolutely horrific. The bathrooms have large skylights (glass) so I think it’s a coin toss.....the power keeps fluctuating- the power back-up on my computer keeps clicking.., so I don’t know how long I will have electricity......I had 2 hours of sleep......the winds woke me up......sounds like freight trains.... you can hear things being thrown around out there.

My cats are under the bed........and my neighbor (these are big, old, 3 story, brick houses, Philly row homes- now called “town homes”.....lololol....) is singing gospel at the top of her lungs....She is a gospel singer in her church’s choir......services, all over, were cancelled today.......

But... we’re ok here.......still standing.”

I lived directly across from Fisherman’s Beach in Swampscott, Mass in 1960 when hurricane Donna came through. I guess that was the last really big hurricane to come through. This one doesn’t look to be more than some flooding.

I’m most concerned about the rivers coming down from the green mountains in VT and the white mountains in NH and Maine. I think that is going to cause the real damage.
