Something good to know when you have a power outage since most of us have some back up way to boil water:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2275972_cook-thermos-save-energy-money.html

My mother used to make oatmeal this way when we went camping. She would fix it the night before and it would be all ready the next morning for breakfast. Just make sure to lay thermos on its side for the most even cooking.

I have two wide mouth ones that work really well for this, and use the regular mouth ones to hold hot coffee, hot water for tea, and hot cocoa for the kids. We get most of our power outages in my neck of the woods during the winter months when something warm tastes really good because there is no heat in the house!

No, nor’easters can be rain. Believe me, when I had my condo at the Jersey Shore, we had dozens of nor’easters, where the rain poured sideways and the wind howled like a banshee. We lived on the north side of the building and it was something to experience!

Fromn Post 1 (which you replied to):

Please take a moment to remember a lot of FReepers are potentially in the path of this storm. Use common sense when posting. Please take a moment to review the graphics and links provided at the top of this thread before posting graphics. For large graphics--post only the link.

Good thing is she does not live in Manhattan, but around Jersey City. She does work in Manhattan, however ...we’ll see if she can get in by Monday.

I’ll TRY not to worry, but it’s hard ...;0

I told her to prepare. She’s listening ...but whatever. I’ll have to let her live and learn.

I’m not clear about why you posted a very large and outdated satellite image of Hurricane Irene from yesterday. The storm is further north today, approaching NC landfall. For current satellite images and loops, you can follow the links at the top of the thread. No need to re-post the images in the thread.

I'm surprised it took this long to bring this up, how many Sat. dishes got lost last time & how long before replacement?

& would it be worth just taking it down yourself?

www.wgmd.com will be on air live around the clock beginning at 4pm tomorrow and through Sunday....it covers the Delmarva peninsula.

If you’d like to include it in your list.

thank you for keeping this thread alive. I refer to it often as I have in the past.

it’s a large plant with its own backup power source, so, no matter how much disaster has hit my house, by Monday it’s back to work for me too!

If your place of employment has shower facilities, you may look forward to a nice hot shower at work if you don't have any hot water at home for a few days :o)

Just heard from a friend who grew up on the LI beach; lived through many other hurricanes & NEasters. She & family are sitting out Ms. Irene, as she calls this thing, in Jersey City.

Am not worried about her.

After it goes through they should be able to walk to stores (which will wat to open) etc., so power outages are more of an inconvenience than a danger.

As for my other relatives on the Va.Beach & Jersey Shore, I hope they got out yesterday and today.

When Hurricane Katrine hit, there was looting in upper class stores and stories of severe vandalism.

Thanks for the link. Saw that site when pulling sources together in the wee hours, and it didn’t have much info at the time.

I notice on this thread there is not one person wishing destruction on the Northeast. Such a wonderful change from yesterday afternoon when a thread called a prayer service (!) included freepers who were enjoying the oncoming hurricane because of the pain it would bring to this bastion of evil. This one is filled with good will and good advice.

Indian Beach proper has large stands of Live Oak and Yaupon trees, and is wider. I’d think the potential for geography-altering damage would be minimized by that.

Emerald Isle, the town, sits upon an immense high dune field covering that whole end of the island, it actually seems hilly driving around in it, which is very unusual for the typically very flat southeast coast, save a single dune line right at the beach itself. Much of those dunes are treed as well, and oceanfront houses are typically on a high, deep dune. This would minimize problems there as well.

Salter Path is the weak point. Atlantic Beach to the east is older, more built up, near the end of the island.

All of them save Atlantic Beach are gorgeous beaches, not very well known to out of staters but well known to natives. I’d hate to see any of them damaged. But, that’s the nature of the NC coast. Those barrier islands are just glorified sandbars. They’ve always moved, new inlets cut by storms, eroding on one end and filling in on the other. Part of the beauty and attraction of them is the fragility of them, in the face of frequent wild weather.
