"We are in SE Pa also. Tulip poplars a plenty. Fortunately, when we built the house we tried to clear most of them out to keep them from the house."

Over the years, we've thinned them out some, and storms have taken out others. Even if we removed every tree on the property, however, we'd be threatened by those on neighboring lots. They really tower over us. I expect we'll see some drop, but hopefully they'll drop away from the house. The softest ground is in the woods behind us.

Whatever works for you is what matters. We have a generator that will pump water and run the rest of our household essentials for quite a long time if used sparingly.

Our well water is bad, even the dogs will not drink it, and thus we rely on the artesian spring. We can also get water from our lake to flush the toilet if all our back-up options fail.

People in the areas that expect to lose electrical power might want to check to see if there are any safe artesian wells in there area. They are not always well publicized. Those who sell water do not usually like a free water source widely known to the public.

"We can’t move our freshman into her UD dorm tomorrow"

We moved our son to Penn State last weekend. He should be just fine - probably having hurricane parties. Hope he also studies his calculus and chemistry.

Now you are thinking. I would do the same. Keep one at the residence, and one in a private lot free from trees. Keep in mind that a street sign might be sticking out of the back window, but at least it will fire up! :^)

Sure looks like more than just a jog to the right on the satellite loop, time will tell.

Look for an orgy of looting once the lights go out. With an unarmed citezenry, who’s going to stop them?

You can bet the manipulators are going to use any major flooding and wind damage to their full extent, plus gas prices will be jacked up as well.

Thanks. I fear you’re right about the litigiousness. Everybody looking to ‘get rich’ at someone else’s expense. And not only in NYC.

I spoke with the dear daughter and her husband earlier this eve and it sounds like they have it as under control as possible. He said they have enough food/water for 3 weeks. Helps that they both eat like birds! In fact, his younger bro lives down @ Kips Bay so may be evacuated and spend some quality time with them.

They took my advice about taping the windows. Since they JUST moved into their apt from SF they have lots and lots of cardboard. I’m not really worried, esp. since Irene has been downgraded. For young libs, they both basically have good heads on their shoulders (at least they were RAISED right).

Stay safe and let us hear how it goes for you.

Thanks. I opted NOT to buy bottled water even when it was plentiful in the stores. I use a Brita filter and have transferred the filtered water to some gallon bottles I keep on hand for just such an emergency as this. I’m thinking our worst case scenario will be loss of power for a day. Time will tell. The tragedy was my shattering the nice thermos I kept for coffee. Now THAT is serious. Stay safe.

Thats probably right up there with Trutherism and Aliens.

You equate asking if the MSM is exaggerating by inflating the reports about weather severity and if its QUOTE within the realm of possibility UNQUOTE for such exaggeration by the MSM as being akin to truthers and flying saucers ?

Uh.... yeah... ok... whatever.

I'll file my question away, right next to the accurate reporting by the MSM about global warming. Have a nice day.

I’m in that light green in the southwest corner of NC.

We were told to expect wind from the storm, but no precipitation.

But we’re light green on the map, and sure enough, we had rain an hour ago! Not much, but it’s a welcome change from the storms circling around us, or splitting to go to either side of us....
