"I spent about a week this summer digging a “seep-away” near one of my basement trouble spots. Dug a big hole about 5 feet from the house and a trench down towards it, loaded with gravel. This should be a good test to see if it was worth it. (Well, I did get a tan & some exercise, so it shouldn’t be a total loss)."

I hope you'll update us on how it works. We have a trouble area near our Bilco door. Hubby did some drainage work but it's not working as well as he'd hoped, and I think we'll need to do something more aggressive.

I will be here as long as I have electric. I’m also on LI. May God bless you and yours.

Perfect! Sounds like they were here for our pre-hurricane party! Attendance was way down, so we have lots of food left for the during hurricane BBQ Sunday around noon-time.

If you have a weather alert radio, it will scream for tornadoes, flash floods, etc. Night time hurricanes are the worst!

Dear patton,

Our first single family house had 100 amp service. We were always blowing fuses. Our second house had 200 amp service, built in 1993. Didn't trip the circuit breakers very often, but it happened. As well, we had gas heat and a regular air conditioner, and only one zone.

This house has 400 amp service, but a big part of that is the “electric furnace” that comes on when it gets too cold for the heat pump to heat the house anymore in the winter. I'm told that those things are electric hogs. And I have TWO heat pumps, not one, for two-zone heating and cooling.

All things considered, since I have an all-electric house, my bills aren't too bad. Pretty decent insulation, the heat pumps were pretty efficient when we built the house 10 years ago (although they're no longer considered very efficient at all), we're careful about keeping the thermostat reasonable. All in all, it doesn't cost much more, when taking into inflation, to provide the electricity we need for everything, including heating and cooling, than we spent for electric + gas 10 years ago. And that house was only about 2300 sq ft, and this one is about 3200 sq ft.

But the peak usage to turn some things on, and to keep them on for the periods of time they need to be on, is pretty outrageous.

Yeah, the Delaware is going to get hammered. A few weeks after Ivan, in 2004, we were canoeing the Delaware River near Bushkill. Ten or more feet up in trees there was debris stuck in branches which was left from the high water mark. Most of the island campsites were washed out and have not been reopened since then.

Partly as a result of that storm, a stretch of Rt. 206 which parallels the river near Bushkill (and frequently gets flooded) is going to be cut off from through traffic. It’s use will be limited to those using the DE Water Gap Recreation Area. A higher ground thru route is being constructed.

That’s so kind of you, ma’am. And the Religion Moderator came right after your comment to chase God away, I guess that is the only way to make sense of it now.

Go to sleep. I always sleep through hurricanes. Much less stressful than worrying about every bump and wail.

Yeah, but...

My 7.5 KVA will run the entire house, excluding only the A/C. Heat is GFA, but we use wood instead... so really, it is running only a fridge, freezer, lights, and the computers/TVs.

Now way that needs even a SURGE of 7.5

Dear lainie,

It appears to be a little above Route 5, near Great Mills. My friend is the pastor of the Catholic Church nearby.

Why should I trust $39.99 personal weather stations from WalMart? For all I know, they are transmitting data from a junk box in a garage.

Looking at ~30 weather stations in my immediate locale, the wind speeds vary from 0.0-17.6 mph. Temps range from 86.7º-93.9ºF. Humidity range 21-92.7%. No sale. Not interested.

A few minutes ago, I looked at the stations in my vicinity (odd noises outside -- wildlife on the deck again, or perhaps wind?) and saw windspeeds scattered between 0.0 and 48.0 -- and I'm at the western end of NC: the 48 mph is pure fiction.

The closest Weather Underground station to me (semi-rural area) chronically misses most precipitation (wonder where the gauge is?). The next-closest WU station can't seem to stay online.

Agree. I am not posting on this thread anymore. But since it is for storm info I just spoke with my sister in Maryland and my niece in NJ, that lives 2 miles from the beach. No winds near hurricane strength, lots of rain.

Sad it is to say that you called the situation. A good thread moderator should have kindness and compassion for all and not just a clique. A vicious sort of clique can develop around an otherwise good person whose head gets inflated by lavish suckup-ism like a hurricane is fed by warm water and by that energy do a similar set of damages to a great forum.

Yeah we have one of those, plus we’re signed up for the local CodeRED emergency notification system so the phones will ring (at least I hope they do if we have power) if there’s anything overnight. Husband says he’s probably going to stay up all night, he works second shift so its not outside the realm of possibility...

NautiNurse,

Thank you for a most excellent thread. I here there are now over 2 million without power and there is still a long way to go before Irene has run here course.

Please don’t let the anal emissions from a few select posters deter you.

I am sure some lives were saved by following this important thread. And many found comfort and helpful hints to ease distress & answer questions.
