The one thing which most people don’t keep a good enough supply of is water. The last major hurricane we had in the Florida panhandle the power stayed off for 9 days.

We were lucky in that we had a creek running only about 50 yards from the house so we could get all the non potable water we wanted but you do get tired of toting it.

Drinking water is not as much of a problem as one might think. We had saved several gallons and along with soft drinks, milk etc. we never came close to running out. Of course Daddy had a generator to run the refrigerator and freezer.

A lot of people must have run out of water as the one thing every store seemed to sell out of was baby wipes. People were using them to take a rough bath.

One thing which surprised me was all the gas stations seemed to have working pumps. Maybe they had generators, I just don’t know but gas was no problem.

The worst problem was the heat. The central AC would not operate on generators. I was surprised how well my 85 year old father handled it tho.

We sure plan to do that! My main concern is a couple of trees in the yard. Wind from SE, if they go they will fall into the house. Other than that, and hubby being at the hospital through the worst of it, we are in good shape.

I’m making ice packs to put in the refrig

Important suggestion here. Fill all of your tupperware with water and stuff them in the freezer tonight. Then before the storm hits, put some of them in the fridge, and put a sign or some tape on the fridge to remind you not to open it.

Keep the food you'll be using in a cooler filled with ice, and fill another cooler with just ice, and only open it when absolutely necessary.

Many may not know that the electric companies will probably be cutting the power even before the storm gets going, out of precaution. Be ready before that happens.

My weather channel said outer bands have reached the outer banks and there are tornado warnings. NC conditions going downhill.

We have a little hand pump that we can hook to the water pump, we will not run out of water. And if we get flooding, I forgot to mention, we made sure our sump pump is working.

New Hampshire here! I stocked up on Sam Adams Oktoberfest. I may have to go without the main power for a few days and have to rely on a little generator, but it keeps the beer in the fridge cold. That'll help when the warm weather returns and the cleanup begins.

Got all the usual stuff, batteries, propane for the grill, the wifes a candle freak, we'll never run out of those, plenty of bottled water and canned food for the two of us and our pets. Bring on the storm!

Coastal CT, and according to the most recent model runs, 2 miles east of the UKMET model track for Irene. I've been watching the forecast model tracks for a couple of days as they've switched to the east and west of me - at one point I had 11 of 15 models track within 30 miles of my house.

The last hurricane of any note around here was Gloria in '85 although, as had been said, we get Nor'easters that are just as troublesome. We took of our preparations a couple of days ago to avoid the rush, so we're all set. Even got a new deck of cards. :)

My generator is capable of running my entire house. I had my electrician install a gen-tran setup. I used it in 2002 when we had that huge blackout. I don’t mess around.

My fridge will keep my food cold and my ice cream frozen.

Yes, I’m directly in the path in central CT. Expecting 70 mph wind and a foot of rain. I’m not woried about the rain because I live on a hill, but I have a lot of maple trees.

Car gassed up
Chain saw is working
All stuff from outside has been put in the shed
Got money
Turned up the freezer and fridge
Filled a bunch of 2 liter bottles of water and put them in the freezer
Got charcoal and lighter fluid (for after the storm)
Lot of bread and peanut butter, wine, chips and salsa
Got batteries and candles

I’ll fill up the bathtub tommorrow
I might tape the windows tommorrow - I don’t think I have to board them up
