Has Rick Perry been tested, I mean really tested?

Do we have evidence that he will do the right thing, when it’s the hardest thing to do?

I don’t mean will he say the right things when it makes him sound conservative or when it goes along with his political ambitions. That’s not a test, it’s the easy thing to do.

I mean in all of his many years as a politician, is there any record that Rick Perry will make the hard choice to do what’s right according to his convictions, even though it brings a heavy personal price and/or a huge political risk?

Perry is Mitt Rino’s worst nightmare. He won’t touch Palin’s numbers.

Pray for America

Maybe I don’t know enough about Perry. But if this is the case, surely something will come up soon that will satisfy my question in post # 4.

Based on the fact that the guy has a long record as Governor of Texas, its hard to say that he hasn't been “tested.” I didn't know much about this guy until a few weeks ago, but when you sift through the crap, its quite impressive and he very well may get my republican primary vote. Of course, like any politician, his track record includes a few actions that give me some pause. However, his explanations and subsequent actions appear reasonable to me.

Its a lot like when I voted for Reagan the first time. I didn't like his flip-flop on abortion, and I was very concerned that his explanation for voting for the Therapeutic abortion act in 1967, allowing for abortion in California, were BS. In addition, I certainly didn't like Reagan's track record of raising taxes as California governor - he voted for the largest tax increase at the time in California history. Yet his explanations seemed reasonable (necessary given the California Dem legislature). I gave the guy a shot because, on the whole, he seemed to be the best conservative candidate at the time and I hoped it wasn't BS. It turned out pretty good for me and the Country. Perry's track record as governor of Texas lines up pretty good against this bar. Particularly his stand on taxes, abortion and gun control. Now for those who seem to attack him on immigration issues, do your homework. Perry has what appears to be reasonable explanations and a different take on the spin. In addition, keep in mind that even our beloved Reagan made a goof in this area, granting amnesty for over 3 million illegals. Something Perry is nowhere near being accused of.

I guess we're going to find out how well he holds up.

So far he has.

And here is a snapshot of his strong support.

The "I know this candidate" (recognition) MATCHED TO "I will contribute money and crawl over broken glass to vote for them" (intensity) numbers.

Perry's intensity numbers have held steady as his recognition numbers continue to rise.

And Perry has room to rise higher as more people review his years in office and learn his story.

Hard choices? Sometimes, and he seems to be trending in the right direction. There are no perfect candidates. If we don’t get Perry, we are likely to end up with Mittens.

Nice, reasoned post. Thanks.

I ran across this yesterday, and knowing Perry's fight with Big Education, thought this was a very interesting essay.

Will Rick Perry Unravel the Strange Consensus on Public Education?

I saw that one yesterday as well. When I started researching Perry, his take on education was one of the things that drew me to him. It is definitely Reaganesque and the fact that the liberal websites are taking notice of this and getting alarmed is further affirmation.

I'm glad you saw that.

I wonder if that teacher/author knew (I guess he does) that Rick Perry refused Obama's "race to the top" money and then sued the Feds for it with no strings attached -- and won.

Gov. Rick Perry said "no" to competing in "Race to the Top." Texas Knows Best How to Educate Our Students

But Rep. Shelia Jackson-Lee and her Democratic Party wanted Perry's signature so the "money would flow to our schools within days."

Gov. Perry sued for Texas' money (without Washington telling us how to spend it) -- And won! Promise Kept.

During his prayer rally, Perry called on God to help “those who cannot see the light in the midst of all the darkness.”

The media is staffed by the poorly educated and the unread. Perry's words were AT A PRAYER MEETING OF CHRISTIANS, and are nearly a direct quote, and definitely a scriptural allusion to: 1 John 2:8 NIV Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

All, of course, is a metaphor used throughout the bible and based on the physical universe:

Genesis 1:2 NIV Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters....4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Our minister (independent Baptist) is pro Perry at this time. I don’t get it. I don’t like any of the candidates so far.

Arguments for electability are not arguments for integrity.

Before I support Perry, I want to see what he’s done in the past that shows he will choose what’s right at the expense of personal gain.

From what I’ve seen, only one presidential contender has passed this test, and it’s not Perry.

What I meant was this: sticking to your word is the true test.

It’s not enough to speak conservative principles during a campaign. It’s not enough to push a conservative political agenda when you know it will score points.

Before I support Rick Perry, I want to see evidence from his record that he did the right thing when nobody was looking.

That wasn't why I posted my comment. My point was, people who know Perry and his positions, like him. He still has more people to reach so his chances of getting the country behind him will be even greater.

I'm glad you have a candidate you can get behind. I wish them well.

“I’m glad you have a candidate you can get behind.”

I’m glad you’re glad. What I’m saying is I want to be “glad” about the candidacy of Rick Perry.

Where in Perry’s record does it show he passes the true test—that he will do what’s right when nobody’s looking?
