State: Death toll to rise from warming
Orange County Register (CA) ^ | August 26, 2011 | by Pat Brennan

A warming climate and an aging population will bring a rise in heat-related deaths over coming decades in California, a new, state-sponsored study says, with heat waves rising in dangerousness as well as frequency.

“The frequency of heat waves is expected to go up, and it could be rather dramatic,” said Laurence Kalkstein, a co-author of the study at the University of Miami.

The report used two climate models, three socio-economic scenarios and multiple projections of population levels to make a range of estimates.

The range is meant to account for uncertainties in the rate of globalization, control of greenhouse gas emissions and technological changes, among other factors.

“We have to surmise that the climate is going to change as these models indicate,” he said. “That is not certain. But if it does, then there are clearly going to be more heat-related deaths.”

The California Air Resources Board commissioned the $191,553 study to better understand potential climate effects, and help guide creation of new air-quality measures, said spokesman Dimitri Stanich.

Exactly. Due to the EPA’s regulations, the elderly may not be able to afford to run the A/C or fans. Remember the stories of how seniors were being forced to choose between food and medicine? So I guess now it will be a choice between staying cool and going hungry.

After a Winter with a very heavy snowpack in the Sierra, this has been one of the coolest Summers I have ever seen in eastern California. We hit around 100 degrees a few times but it only stayed there for 15 minutes or so before dropping back down into the mid to low 90s and with only 6 to 10% humidity it wasn’t bad at all.

Maybe the coming ice age wil offset that. Credit goes to Leonard Nemoy for that one.

Left is trying to scare the old people some more. You’d think they would get really fed up by now.

Liberalism and even Ted Kennedy’s car have killed more people than “global warming”

Same thing in the central valley. We had rain clear up till July. We didn’t use our cooler till then. We usually have a stretch of 100+ days from July to August, but this year only a handful scattered about. We have a picture of my grandson at White Bark Lookout at the top of Kaiser Pass taken on 6-20. The snow pack is at the top of the sign, 6 feet deep.

Death won’t be related to the temperatures but due to the utility costs.

Yeah, the snow pack is still so deep here in the high country of the Sierra (10,000+ feet) that snowmelt fed rushing creeks have made hiking very risky even in late August.

That rushing snowmelt has wrecked havoc down here in the flats. There have been many deaths from drowning this year in the rivers down here. Despite bans on floating and boating people still insist on getting in the rivers. They end up found downstream months later. They just found a navyman from NASLEM who drowned in the Kings river a while ago.
