Right after their big splashes into the fray as candidates, the numerous Republican hopefuls enjoyed somewhat of a bump in their polling data, but ultimately their numbers did settle. And that phenomenon seems to apply to Texas Gov. Rick Perry – at least thus far, who after his announcement earlier this month has seen his stock rise. However, could Perry’s prominence be here to stay?
On this weekend’s broadcast of the syndicated program “Inside Washington,” Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer argued that in the case of Perry, he is here to stay and has the right message for electoral success.
“Look, it could be a fluke – a Trump phenomenon, but I think it is deeper than that here,” Krauthammer said. “I think [New York Times columnist David] Brooks is right in his column. He says he has a simple message which is, ‘Smaller government, I made it work. I created jobs,’ which is a powerful force in the country today.”
And unlike Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan who said he would not be a candidate in 2012, Perry has a message that is simple, which makes him formidable in not only the GOP primary, but also the general election.
“It is what powered the Republicans to their astonishing success in 2010,” he continued. “It is sort of Paul Ryan without the numbers and the nuance. And it’s a message that if he keeps it simple, I think that could be a winning message, in the primary and even in the general election.”
I know where you’re coming from on that. I thought the same thing when Peggy Noonan and Karl Rove’s heads exploded over Perry. Krauthammer seems a mixed bag.

In 1978, Krauthammer quit the practice of psychiatry and came to Washington to direct planning in psychiatric research under the Carter administration. He began contributing articles about politics to The New Republic and in 1980 served as a speech writer to Vice President Walter Mondale.

In 1984, Perry was elected to the Texas House of Representatives as a Democrat from district 64 that included his home county of Haskell. He served on the House Appropriations and Calendars committees during his three two-year terms in office. He befriended fellow freshman state representative Lena Guerrero of Austin, a staunch liberal Democrat who endorsed Perry’s reelection bid in 2006 on personal, rather than philosophical, grounds. Perry was part of the “Pit Bulls”, a group of Appropriations members who sat on the lower dais in the committee room (or “pit”) who pushed for austere state budgets during the 1980s.
In 1987, Perry voted for a $5.7 billion tax increase proposed by Republican governor Bill Clements. Perry supported Al Gore in the 1988 Democratic presidential primaries and chaired the Gore campaign in Texas.

I know about the STD vaccine brouhaha and the Trans-Texas Corridor imbroglio but I would appreciate hearing Perrys' take on those issues, not just the attacks and counter-attacks from his detractors and admirers. In short, I want to do my own vetting of Governor Rick Perry based on his words and his actions. Like Sarah Palin and her 'half-term' as Alaska governor, he has a few issues to deal with. Frankly, looking at the current field, the only other real conservative with a prayer at this point is Michele Bachmann. However, her chances of capturing the GOP primary vote are quickly dimming as Rick Perry surges ahead in the inevitable primary 'horse race'. I like surges but in Perry's case, I would like to see/hear him responding to serious, non-gotcha! questions from a fair interviewer so I could ascertain whether I want to support him 100%, absent a run by Sarah Palin. I doubt I'll have to wait too long. I hope not.
I realize it’s not scientific but I don’t know a soul here in Texas that will vote for Perry in the primary if Palin is there. I know I for sure won’t. He is not in the top 3. Just saying.
Are you from Texas? Because no one I know looks at the land grab the vaccine debacle, or the Open borders subjects in the light you suggest. It literally blows my mind that you as a conservative would support him in spite of these things.
Well that may be overstating it a little, but I agree that most of the initiatives we need to begin to reclaim the country will have to come from congress. But it is very important that we have a president who will appoint constitutionalists to the judiciary, and who will be willing to begin to dismantle all the various federal agencies that are not acountable to anyone and are basicly outside the law. But even if Perry is weak on immigration issues, what is more important is that states who want to enforce their own immigration laws not be hindered by the justice department. So even if Perry can go that far, it would still be a vast improvement. I honestly don't know if Perry is a RINO or not a RINO, hopefully we will find out soon.
Well, if you’re going to propose major infrastructure upgrade in a state that’s exploding with people and commerce, you’re going to have financing, land, and environmental issues.
I have no problem with his vision, but in the end it was simply too big of a project impacting too many special interests.
I live in Texas, and I disagree. I’ll vote for Perry even if she runs.
From what I've seen they are leading the "anybody but Perry" charge. Now that they have figured out their boy Romney is a dud, they are trying to get Paul Ryan to run.
