Right after their big splashes into the fray as candidates, the numerous Republican hopefuls enjoyed somewhat of a bump in their polling data, but ultimately their numbers did settle. And that phenomenon seems to apply to Texas Gov. Rick Perry – at least thus far, who after his announcement earlier this month has seen his stock rise. However, could Perry’s prominence be here to stay?
On this weekend’s broadcast of the syndicated program “Inside Washington,” Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer argued that in the case of Perry, he is here to stay and has the right message for electoral success.
“Look, it could be a fluke – a Trump phenomenon, but I think it is deeper than that here,” Krauthammer said. “I think [New York Times columnist David] Brooks is right in his column. He says he has a simple message which is, ‘Smaller government, I made it work. I created jobs,’ which is a powerful force in the country today.”
And unlike Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan who said he would not be a candidate in 2012, Perry has a message that is simple, which makes him formidable in not only the GOP primary, but also the general election.
“It is what powered the Republicans to their astonishing success in 2010,” he continued. “It is sort of Paul Ryan without the numbers and the nuance. And it’s a message that if he keeps it simple, I think that could be a winning message, in the primary and even in the general election.”

That’s great. I am not telling anyone how to vote. I am just trying to understand how Perry became so loved as a conservative mostly by people who do not live here and are not privy to all the controversy he has started in his time in public office. Most of us here are conservatives (excluding Romney supporters) so I just blows my mind he was able to pull the wool so to speak. Just wait till some vetting comes along. If Palin does not run I will vote for the most conservative person left in the primary. That is certainly NOT Perry. I am sure he is a nice guy and is even right on some issues. But not on the items I listed. And if he will compromise on those he will break your heart in McCain fashion.
You’re right...”not scientific”. My family/friends vote is very unscientific as well. I have discussed Perry with close friends that are native born Texans. They spoke well of Rick, although not anything close to wild-eyed fanaticals. They are rock solid self achievers that have never relied on government. Needless to say, I respect their opinions.

Perry changed parties in 1989, joining Phil Gramm and other conservative Texas Democrats, who now had a true ideological party with a burgeoning Texas GOP.
When Perry campaigned for Lt. Gov. [1998], he and his campaign staff were in it to win and his hard-nosed style was against the "friendly" advice and request of GWB [in re-election bid for Texas Gov] and Rove to run easy against Sharp, a popular democrat (and Aggie friend of Perry's from their A&M years together). Rove wanted to broaden Bush's base for his upcoming White House run. Perry told them where to stick their advice, because he knew the voters would vote for Bush for Gov. and then cross back over and vote for Sharp (D) for Lt. Gov, if he just walked through the motions like the Bush-Rove team asked him to do.
Perry won the seat for Lt. Gov. -- the first Republican elected to that office since Reconstruction. Now 13 years later and into his 3rd term as Texas governor, the GOP holds a super majority. So Perry has earned his conservative spurs -- fighting both parties!

The Bush/Rove cabal initially pushed Mitch Daniels, then Paul Ryan and now, who knows? They may put their PAC dough into Senate and House races in support of “country-club” Rinos and stay sidelined in the run for POTUS.
I understand your point. If not Romney,not Perry, then who really is there who can win and this means winning a large chunk of the independents- that leaves Palin out. Obama begins with the big states already in the bag and a few others that are dyed-in-the-wool blue and its a given that the nominee will concede as well. Like in CA, MA, NY, WA, OR, IL, CT, and DE.

Perhaps read the piece and not use every Perry posting as a slam Perry fest. I am 50-50 on Perry right now, but Kraut’s point - which answers your question — is that Perry has the right message and a simple message that will probably work in 2012. THATS how Perry is being loved by many conservatives who live outside of Texas. It’s the MESSAGE. It’s simple. It’s powerful. It’s the right message for our times.
Now, does Perry himself believe it? I don’t know. If he wins, will he govern by this message even if he has not always done so in Texas? Who knows?
But it is the right message.
So uh Tejas boy....ready to salute your Mexican flag?

Right you are! The real meat of the election will not be in the Northeast, nor on the left Coast. I think that it’s fair to say that Perry would run well in the entire South including FL and NC. The interesting battles would be in MO,IN,IA,NM,CO and NV. Right now, Obama polls below 40% in these “swing” States.
Are you from Texas? Because no one I know looks at the land grab the vaccine debacle, or the Open borders subjects in the light you suggest. It literally blows my mind that you as a conservative would support him in spite of these things.
