Early Obama Letter Confirms Inability to Write
American Thinker ^ | 8/29/11 | Jack Cashill

Posted on 08/29/2011 10:43:50 AM PDT by American Dream 246

On November 16, 1990, Barack Obama, then president of the Harvard Law Review, published a letter in the Harvard Law Record, an independent Harvard Law School newspaper, championing affirmative action.

Although a paragraph from this letter was excerpted in David Remnick's biography of Obama, The Bridge, I had not seen the letter in its entirety before this week. Not surprisingly, it confirms everything I know about Barack Obama, the writer and thinker.

Obama was prompted to write by an earlier letter from a Mr. Jim Chen that criticized Harvard Law Review's affirmative action policies. Specifically, Chen had argued that affirmative action stigmatized its presumed beneficiaries.

The response is classic Obama: patronizing, dishonest, syntactically muddled, and grammatically challenged. In the very first sentence Obama leads with his signature failing, one on full display in his earlier published work: his inability to make subject and predicate agree.

"Since the merits of the Law Review's selection policy has been the subject of commentary for the last three issues," wrote Obama, "I'd like to take the time to clarify exactly how our selection process works."

If Obama were as smart as a fifth-grader, he would know, of course, that "merits ... have." Were there such a thing as a literary Darwin Award, Obama could have won it on this on one sentence alone. He had vindicated Chen in his first ten words.

Although the letter is fewer than a thousand words long, Obama repeats the subject-predicate error at least two more times. In one sentence, he seemingly cannot make up his mind as to which verb option is correct so he tries both: "Approximately half of this first batch is chosen ... the other half are selected ... "

anyone can make mistakes like that. but of course, not just anyone can be president. can he?

but the good news is it appears that there are cracks forming in the great wall separating Obama's resume from the rest of the world.

There's a lot about Obama I've read and must say I tend to believe.

"Barry still could not get a real job, because he was still a fraud, even with his Harvard degree in hand he could lie and take the Bar exam, but he could not work as a lawyer for a major law firm without a back ground investigation and he would never pass one. So, Michelle got Barry a job at her law firm. Barry never filed a case alone and never filed a motion. He wrote lots of memos according to the law firm where Barry worked. (I think they know Barry is a fraud and don't want to be sued by previous clients) Barry rescinded his law licenses, so as not to be disbarred for fraud. The Bar knows Barry lied on his application. Michelle also had to turn over her law license for her involvement in corruption with the Chicago mayors office."

Is it too late to have Bill Ayers take a look at the letter and see if he can’t improve it?

If Bill could add in a description of one of his old girlfriends, it might make the letter more interesting, too.

He is using a teleprompter as a crutch for a lot of reasons.

He is not now and never was a reader. What he DID read was not going to develop his powers of expression. Dogma doesn't do that.

He is not very intelligent, or he'd be able to wing it. He^%, even a talk show idiot can ad lib and wing it!!

He is only a radical, Liberal hack with a very limited understanding of economics, foreign policy, economics, the American political system, etc. He is always grinding an ax and never actually CONVEYING anything except a rehash of his 60’s style ‘I hate America’ BS.

You know, if someone had no idea who Barky was, they'd read that article and think it was terribly pedantic.

However, knowing who he is and the breath-taking adulation dumped on him the past three years, it's not pedantic at all.

Obviously this is just another part of the reason his entire history has been covered up.

How come nobody ever talks about the earpiece that they use to feed him his every word?

The teleprompter are probably a foil to distract attention away from that.

My take-home from this article is that Obama is NOT smarter than a fifth-grader...

It’s is amazing to hear the meme of “Obama is brilliant” being trotted out so persistently by the MSM despite the absence of evidence for this proposition and especially in light of the contrary evidence. Not that “evidence” ever has stood in the way of a good story-line for such reporters.

Surely he had an editor on his staff and his entire Haaa-vaad team could spot the errors in a heartbeat. Were they intimidated either by the man (was he tyrannical?) or his race (oooh, we’re liberal and couldn’t possibly correct the Black man), or did they simply despise him - either for the circumstance of his selection or his persona - and thus fail to protect him? This would be a fascinating study in liberal dynamics and thus will never happen.

This goes far beyond being an affirmative action president; he is truly the Manchurian Candidate, and all that is implied by that statement. He is also very close to being the antichrist, but that is another thread.

The more interesting part of the letter to me is the admission Harvard even uses affirmative action to put people on the prestigious law review. That explains a lot.

You have no idea how many levels of review and checking law review articles go through, especially in a review as prestigious as Harvard's. It is surprising this has so many errors. But, since Barry was an editor himself, maybe on one checked his work.

I didn’t read the whole letter Obama wrote. I just read the example in the excerpt above. But if you are right and the letter goes through many levels of review and checking, then it seems more than one person missed the noun verb agreement.

yet we see no examples of his “genius” except that he delivers speaches well... well, if you discount his affected “intellectual stammer” (where he’s supposedly trying to “dumb down” what he’s thinking so that the masses can understand it).

anyone can make mistakes like that.

For informal writing, such mistakes are commonly made by people who are careless with their grammar. For formal writing, such as a letter being published by the Harvard Law Review, those same mistakes are inexcusable.

Was the HLR staff afraid to proofread Obama's writing and point out his mistakes?

The only interesting thing about this story is that someone found something about Obama pre-2008 that is outside the official narrative set-forth in Dreams of My Father.

So, he got subject-verb agreement wrong when the subject was separated by a long modifying clause containing a noun with a different grammatical number, big deal. Only grammatical pecksniffs regard such a lapse as indicative of lack of intelligence. More likely it's indicative of lack of proofreading. And don't forget he was educated in Indonesian schools, hardly the place to pick up the fine points of English grammar. The real proof he's not very bright is provided by the dog that's not barking: if he were smart, he'd have released his Occidental, Columbia and Harvard transcripts to prove it. Well, unless the real reason for hiding them is that he was admitted as an international student with Indonesian citizenship, in which case they'd be hidden away even if they showed a 4.0 average.

No doubt anyone can make such mistakes, especially when quickly posting to a blog. However, when that individual is President of the Harvard Law Review, it behooves him to check his own writing before publishing such drivel, lest he and the Review be found to have intellectual egg on their collective ties.
