Mr. President, Where's the Bill?
9-8-2011 | cc2k

I watched the speech tonight. As speeches go, it was interesting.

Mr. Obama repeatedly mentioned his proposed "American Jobs Act." He was telling about all these magical, wonderful things that were in the "American Jobs Act."

He went on to basically demand, "Pass the bill."

Congress can't pass a speech!

I'd like to read the bill before I call my Congress Critter one way or the other.

During the speech, a Google search for the phrase "American Jobs Act" on the whitehouse.gov website. Returned no results at all. By the end of the speech, it returned a single link to a page with a live video feed of some kind. I watched for a bit and am listening to it in the background. So far, I haven't heard anything that Congress can vote on.

Where's the bill, Mr. President?

$4000 tax credit to employers who hire someone unemployed for 6 months+. Clearly it would be paid for by 1) eliminating the unemployment payment, and 2) getting this working back to work, contributing income tax.

It's not paid for by anything, other than an employer who absorbs the other costs of "hiring" someone to get a "tax credit."

Do you have any idea how many times this has been proposed, and how many jobs it's created?

At least 5 times, and 0 jobs. It's yet another re-tread of an idea Obummer has already tried selling. It's a non-starter. NO employer in their right mind incurs tens of thousands of dollars of hiring costs to get a four thousand dollar credit. That's a losing proposition that only a socialist/marxist/economic idiot like Obama can embrace.

I agree an employer isn’t going to create a job just for the credit...but It may encourage some hiring from the unemployment rolls, for openings they currently have... And employee payroll tax would eventually return the cost of the tax credit back to the treasury. I know that some corporate recruiters actively look for these types of incentives.

Since the money to pay for the “American Jobs Act” will be coming from the 12 man commission maybe they should handle the bill too. So instead of $1.5 billion in cuts now they have to find $2 billion; will the commission go for that?

I want to see the scoring on that sucker. There is no way the commission can find the cuts for this one.

Agreed. 4 grand is peanuts in the world of hiring. Now all men are not created equal. The unemployed are more likely to get a job than someone who is busting their butt at a get by job until they can find better.

Again. Why am I working this damn hard at a get by job while looking for better?

That government tit looks better everyday while those of us working are treated as idiots.

Where's the bill, Mr. President?

Obama gave a speech. Isn't that enough for the Democrats to deem the bill passed?

Oh, yeah... the Democrats don't control the House anymore. I wonder if anyone told Obama.

I don't think you'd fare well as a moocher. You could never be one of them.

The first five minutes were into, as any good speech coach will tell you, and then he got to the nuts and bolts. He didn’t have an effective conclusion at all. I thought it was a very abrupt ending.

He did say something like “pass it now” a coupla dozen times.

And now we find it isn’t even written? Typical politician. They were waiting to see the blowback before the put pen to page.

Being a veteran and a red-blooded American, I liked the idea of finding jobs for veterans. I’m also a “buy American” supporter, so that was a decent part of the speech.

I was hoping to hear about total tax reform. He spoke about “reform” of one portion of one section of tax law. They’re gonna tweak capital gains a bit. Whoop.

The only economic proposal I want to hear from now on is a sweeping change of our tax system. Get RID of the originally unconstitutional income tax, and go to a consumption tax.

Boehner should announce that he'll put it up for a vote no sooner than 72 hours after the White House publishes the bill..

White House does not publish a bill.

It was a "speech". Obama gave it. So it was filled with lies.

I cannot stomach listening to him or watching him on TV. All I know about the speech I read on Free Republic.

The principle issue is that Obama demanded that Congress pass his bill, but there isn't any bill. Has the MSM picked up on this?

Some writers have, but I’ve seen nothing on Fox tonight. Bill O’Reilly absolutely bumfuzzled Presidential Press Secty Carney tonight. That was funny, but no mention that the bill doesn’t yet exist.

If you’ve ever heard clothesline preaching, that’s what Obama did tonight. He had intro, body, weak conclusion. The body was points 1-25 soundbites about each item on the clothesline from teachers to bridges....one of which is the I-75 bridge across the Ohio River here where I live. (He had the Cincy mayor at the speech.)

That bridge is the furthest thing from “shovel ready” that I could ever imagine. The only ones he could hire would be the engineers that begin the study of how to change I-75 to redesign an outdated, clogged bridge. How long do engineers need for that kind of stuff? Years and years.

We’ll be using those shovels to bury people waiting for that “shovel ready” to come on line.
