A personal remembrance of FReeper BKO (Barbara Olson) "let us never forget..."
one man's opinion....

Posted on 09/09/2011 12:49:05 PM PDT by ken5050

Among the victims on 9/11 was Barbara Olson, the beautiful and brilliant author and political commentator who perished when American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. Many here will recall that she was an avid Freeper ( her screen handle was "bko" )...and many who are new to FR may not have known it. It was because of FR that I had the very good fortune to get to know Barbara..indeed, the week before she died we'd spoken on the phone, to talk about actually meeting in NYC for the first time later that month. She was an absolute delight, and I thought I'd like to briefly share with all of you a little bit about my experiences with her.

Awesome post and stories. I pinged Deb. She knew BKO too. I found the picture at Google images (first pic) using “Welcome to Chappaqua” in the word search.

It personalized and really brought it ‘home’ to us when we saw someone we felt like we knew, someone we liked so much.

Sad memories. Thanks for writing about it Meg.

Thanks for posting this. Seems as though I remember a thread which included Barbara & Ted’s conversation just before the end. She asked something to the effect of “What can we do?”

It is quite possible that with a few more minutes (since they knew about the World Trade Center) they would have come to the same conclusion that the Flight 93 passengers did.

You must be felling pretty sad about now with the date arriving and all.

Barbara and then Tony a few years back, we have lost a lot of good people over the years.

I miss Chief Negotiator the most of all.

The poem the priest recited at Barbara’s funeral. It still affects me.

I walked a mile with Gladness;
She chattered all the way;
But left me none the wiser
For all she had to say.

I walked a mile with Sorrow,
And ne’er a word said she;
But, oh! The things I learned from her,
When sorrow walked with me.

I sure do. I used to flirt with BKO, obviously jokingly because her husband was a United States Solicitor General, after all.

I'd have done time if it ever had gotten past joking.

I have to agree. I had a different screen name then.. those were heady days.

The righetous indignation that permeated everything, and rightfully so.....remember hanging out in FR awaiting the results of the florida SC decision, and the ultimate SC decision....7-2.....and the media spins it to 5-4. 5-4 was the remedy, not the decision.

...and 9/11.....this was the first place I visited....reports from FReepers on the ground within minutes of the first plane...

Remember tourist guy? DITHF?

... ah, some great stuff back then.....

Yes Guennie, and as we enter this solemn weekend and are hearing newly released tapes, I very clearly remember years ago when they released the surveillance video from the airport of our Dear Barbara gathering her belongings after going through the metal detector and proceeding on toward the plane. I didn’t even know it was coming. I have no words to describe the feelings I had when I watched that video.

Thanks so much for you kind words..I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Though unrelated to the topic of the thread, there was a common theme in many of your comments...how much FR has changed since those days...it's a different place now..harsher, less civil..sometimes unpleasant..

The natural eveolution of political discourse in a decade, or have we so allowed our opponents to debase our society? We shall see over then next 15 months...
