i’m confused. Why are any signing bonuses needed? Is there a shortage of workers?

Always remember, management has to agree to this too. The top brass in the auto companies don’t care as long as they get their multi-million dollar bonuses. They’ll just raise the price of the cars and get a bailout from Uncle Hussein if they can’t sell them.

'Bloomberg reported a $10,000 signing bonus for each UAW member would cost about $470 million at GM, $410 million at Ford and $250 million at Chrysler.'
Okay Ford. I'm looking at getting a new truck. Don't go bailout on me in a few months because of said financial decisions.

What exactly is this “Signing Bonus”? Why in the world would there be bonuses like this in the economy we have now?

They work for the government now.

With the government bailout of GM and Chrysler came a guarantee of unlimited wage concessions. They will pay anything to the union, big bonuses to management, and nothing to repay the taxpayers. The Federal and leftist state governments will buy loads of GM and Chrysler cars at the price demanded to keep 'em afloat, and they will buy only enough discounted Fords to disarm critics of Fascist enterprises.
The question is Ford.
Can Ford afford big raises, or will they have to offer less than GM and deal with a strike.
GM and Chrysler will not support Ford with a lockout if the union strikes Ford, they are now Fascist operations and they will act to put Ford (the competition) out of business as all Fascist enterprises do.
It's going to be interesting and very dangerous for Ford.

the funny thing is, some talking head at the gummint just said that auto sales and the industrial production it drives is "key to the recovery."
So then, I guess you know why they're driving such a hard bargain.
