Grizzly shooting pits Idahoans against Uncle Sam
Los Angeles Times ^ | 9-13-11 | Kim Murphy

Posted on 09/13/2011 4:50:13 PM PDT by SJackson

U.S. prosecutors charge a man who said he was protecting his family. State residents and officials are outraged.

Reporting from Bonners Ferry, Idaho— To understand the deep rift over federal regulation of endangered species, one only had to sit in the stands of the annual 4-H auction at the Boundary County Fairgrounds here last month, when 14-year-old Jasmine Hill's handsome pig, Regina, went up for sale.

First, it's important to know the back story: Jasmine's father, Jeremy, had been charged by the U.S. Justice Department a few weeks earlier with shooting a grizzly bear — a federally designated threatened species — 40 yards from the back door of the family home at the base of the Selkirk Mountains.

Plenty of people have been charged with illegally killing endangered wolves, bears, caribou and other animals with tenuous footholds in the rugged country in places like northern Idaho.

But this was different. Hill, his neighbors said, was protecting his home and his family. He was doing what any of them might have done. And now a man trying to raise six children out in the woods on a backhoe operator's earnings was facing up to a year in prison and a $50,000 fine.

So when Jasmine started shyly prodding her prized pig around the arena, Sam Fodge, the owner of a wood-chip mill, quickly bought it at $4.50 a pound, or $1,143. Then Fodge said: "Give it back. Sell it again."

The pig sold next to North Idaho Energy Logs. Then Pluid Logging. Then Three Mile Cafe. In all, Regina was sold 15 times, raising a total of $19,588 for Hill's legal defense fund. Jasmine hung her head, dumbfounded, in the arena. Jeremy and his wife, Rachel, were in tears.

If you’d like to be on or off this Outdoors/Rural/wildlife/hunting/hiking/backpacking/National Parks/animals list please FR mail me. And ping me is you see articles of interest.

Hill has said he was getting out of the shower on Mother's Day in May when his wife spotted a female grizzly and a pair of 2-year-old juveniles nosing around the pigpen 40 yards outside. The two began shouting for their children, who had last been seen playing basketball on the opposite side of the house, but got no answer.

While Rachel went to look for the children, Hill picked up his gun and went onto the back deck. He leveled the weapon at one of the young bears, which was climbing into the pigpen, and fired. The other juvenile bear and the sow rushed into the woods in fright, while the young bear Hill had shot limped off, and then turned and moved back toward the house.

No offence to our FR lawyers, but the law is an ass. The kids are missing. I might have fired a "warning" shot, a bear banger which often runs them, but it was the pigs that were in danger, not the children, humans, who were missing, so obviously this was an assault on the endangered bears. Legal problems. Worse yet, the young bear Hill had shot limped off and he shot him or her, murder.

I'm not big on killing animals that you're not going to eat, or which aren't a threat. But I'd love to hear how three grizzers around missing children aren't a threat.

A Griz would require plenty of shoveling, though the “perp” (hero) IS a backhoe operator.

Damn....it appears as though I committed murder last fall in Alaska.

The victim makes a damned fine rug, though.

Maybe a good mouthpiece can get me a reduced sentence, as the victim was running towards my guide, who was 30 yards from him in waist deep water, with his back turned.

I thought the punchline was going to be that when the gavel fell for the final time and the check was cut for the little girl, the Feds stepped up and ripped it away from her to go towards payment of her Dad’s fine. It would not have surprised me.

I like Idaho.

When I lived in Washington I visited and drove through a couple of times.

They always made me feel like an outsider.

Because I was.

And that’s good that they protect their state.

Now if they could just figure out a way to get the ahole Kalifornicators out of Boise and the other “hip” towns, they may have a chance of not going the way of Washington and Oregon.

A bear can easily run 35 MPH. There wasn't a human at the homestead site who could have outrun any of those bears ~ not even the wounded bear.

The bears wanted to eat pigs. They know what pigs are. They can climb fences. You'd better believe they've done that before!

If all three bears had gotten in the pen ~ which you know they wanted to do ~ he'd had to have shot all three of them because they weren't going to give up game like that just because of a noise.

Next, the house where there were more pink critters just waiting to be dinner.

Think like a bear. They have appetite panics like an insulin dependent diabetic with an overdose.

Grizzlies, black bear, wolves, mountain lions and moose all live in my neighborhood. Any one of them threatens the life of a loved one of mine, I would do whatever it took to protect them. Anyone with half a brain and common sense would do the same. Our government: not so much! In fact, (current case as an example), we'd be financially penalized for protecting our own life or the lives of others. There's something grossly wrong with that perspective.

There was bear scat on my front yard this week. A neighbor saw a mountain lion on her acreage this week as well. Next point, imagine how Obamacare's medical "panels" will view granting emergency medical care for elderly victims of federally protected species (picturing Obama's speech about giving the elderly pills for their pain)?

Careful reading IS our friend.

Check the article and you will find that the shot grizzly bear first limped off and then returned.

He shot a wounded grizzly that was moving towards him.

‘Nuff said.

Last week, the U.S. attorney's office in Boise, faced with outrage bordering on insurrection in northern Idaho...

That sentiment remains. I ought to know, I live here. The federal prosecutor issued a mealy-mouthed, weasel-worded statement implying that she had better information than the locals, the local government, the state government, and the Governor; either that or she acted on worse information. Either way she looked as stupid as she is.

The border of the Grizzly "re-introduction" area is some five miles from Mr. Hill's home. It is very clear from this entire affair that the federal government's priorities subordinate the welfare of the individual citizen to the welfare of another species. At that point the federal government has betrayed its charge and called into question the justification for its very existence.
