New York 9 Special Election – The Race to Replace Weiner

Tonight is the special election in New York 9 – The district formerly held by Rep. Anthony Weiner.

Democrats spent Tuesday in a last-ditch effort to stave off a loss. The Politico reported:

NEW YORK – Democrats here spent Tuesday in the final throes of a frantic, last-ditch effort to stave off a loss in the special election race to replace Anthony Weiner.

Democrat David Weprin, trailing Republican Bob Turner in multiple polls, raced to half a dozen campaign stops, imploring voters at senior centers and subway stops to cast their ballots for him.

Party officials say their best hope for winning lies on the shoulders of the vaunted Queens County Democratic Party machine, which kicked into high gear Tuesday. Inside its headquarters — which doubles as the Weprin campaign’s nerve center — get-out-the vote workers rushed to pick up manila folders containing block-by-block layouts of the district; others sat at the phones, methodically working through voter-contact lists. Volunteers fanned out across Queens, handing out glossy placards highlighting Weprin’s endorsement from the New York Times editorial page.

Despite the last-minute Democratic push, the GOP appeared poised to capture the 9th District seat – an upset that would signal a rejection of President Barack Obama on his party’s turf and underscore the peril that he and Democrats up and down the ballot could face in 2012.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said in a meeting with reporters, “The race is closer than we would like.”

Republican Bob Turner told ABC News that he has obtained a court order to seal all paper ballots in New York’s 9th Congressional District, pending judicial review.

Anthony Weiner's former seat. This is a district that has gone RAT since 1923. As of 10:15 PM, Bob Turner(R) leads David Weprin (D) 56% to 43%.

This race will send a message to the regime similar to Brown's election in MA just before the 2010 election.

Red State is keeping it posted also...but ballots were only 40% in. Turner was quite a bit ahead.

This is so cool. Unfortunately, I’m here in NJ and so don’t have New York 1. Ed Koch was just about to speak but Greta cut him off to talk to Tim Pawlenty (!). She was so impressed that Koch - a Democrat - supported a Republican. How can this obviously seasoned journalist not know that Koch has often crossed party lines? This is no great surprise.

Still, this may be a wonderful upset.

He also said Zero threw Israel under the bus.

And it's all little Weiner's fault ... had he kept the photos to himself then none of this would be happening. No wonder he's bugging out of town incognito right now, the national Dems are quite upset with the little twirp ...

Delicious irony :)

".but ballots were only 40% in. Turner was quite a bit ahead"

They'll be bringing in a truckload of "found" ballots late in the process, and 90% of them will be votes for the (D), all signed with an "X".

The mere fact that the left has to sweat this one out is sweet. If Turner wins just icing on the cake!!!

Anthony Weiner's former seat. This is a district that has gone RAT since 1923.

And Chuck Schumer's. And Geraldine Ferraro's. More or less, anyway; obviously the district lines have moved over the years.

The district is the very definition of diversity. Substantial populations of Jewish, Italian, Irish, and Latino voters. If the Dems are in trouble here, they're in trouble everywhere.

Turner might say: "If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere."

I suspect you could be right...but it sounds like Turner already ordered the judiciary to take control of the ballots..we’ll see...they’re pro’bly going to pull every trick, so I hope Turner wins by a bunchhhhhh....

It looks hopeful, however 0% of Brooklyn has been counted and 5% of Queens has been counted and Democrats own the house. I'm not staying up.

Should Turner win I doubt it will rattle the windows at The White House, but it will at the DNC.

A good portion of the Jewish vote is voting against Occupant’s party since Occupant has fanned the flames against Israel since he was placed in his current residence. Unfortunately for Occupant, but fortunately for The United States of America, this is the forecast for the prevailing political winds over our glorious Republic from sea to shining sea for the next 14 months...
