Poll: Obama's Favorability Rating Upside-Down for First Time
national journal ^ | national journal

Posted on 09/16/2011 4:43:40 PM PDT by sunmars

For the first time, more Americans have an unfavorable opinion of President Obama than have a favorable opinion of him, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll released late Friday, an indication that dissatisfaction with the president's job performance and the direction of the country is dragging down how Americans view Obama personally.

Just 39 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Obama, while 42 percent view him unfavorably. In January of this year, 40 percent had a favorable image of Obama, and 34 percent had an unfavorable opinion. In January 2009, as he was inaugurated, 60 percent of Americans had a favorable opinion of him.

While the president's approval rating -- which is down to 43 percent in the new poll, an all-time low -- is an important indicator of his re-election standing, the high regard Americans felt for Obama personally was a sign that Americans hadn't yet given up on his presidency.

In the new CBS News/New York Times poll, Obama is being crushed by negative data points:

-- 72 percent of Americans believe the nation is on the wrong track, a new high for the Obama presidency.

-- 49 percent of Democrats now say that Obama's job performance has been worse than they expected.

-- 47 percent of Americans are either "not very confident" or "not at all confident" that Obama's jobs legislation "will create jobs and improve the economy."

-- Obama's favorable/unfavorable rating among independents: 31 percent/41 percent.

This from the NYT/CBS pollsters....et tu Brutus. Looks like the voters no longer see him as golden boy personally. The last bastion is falling, the perception is dropping and the curtain has been pulled.

Did the NYT/CBS pollsters have a really-really-really-unfavorably option?

"random sample of 1,452 adults nationwide"

Probably significantly worse among "US citizens", "registered voters" and "likely voters".

You might find this interesting. While some polls are showing Man-Child with a bounce, the number of respondents who think the US is going in the wrong direction keeps growing.

Hmm.

The MIRACLE is that Hussein didn’t go upside down before now. Seriously. He is BAD. I have lived through 9 Presidents in my life so far and have studied American history from childhood. He is THE most inept, inexperienced, incompetent occupant of that office BY FAR.

Hell, Franklin Pierce probably was suffering from full blown clinical depression for most of his term and HE wasn’t this bad.

In my household Obama has a 100% disapproval rating, and has since 2006 when he and his buddy Odinga invaded the Kenyan election to try to turn northeastern Kenya into a Muslim territory intended to be annexed to Somalia.

This week I was in Santa Fe, the liberal hotbed of New Mexico. A boomer friend-of-a-friend, who was a member of “America’s first commune” (in Taos), is known for photographing Woodstock, and was a member of the 2008 Obama campaign in NM, confided over breakfast this morning that she spent yesterday handing out Obama 2012 campaign literature in the square in Santa Fe. She said she got a lot of unexpected abuse and few takers for her bumper stickers and posters. She did, however, say that the foreign tourists were nice to her, especially people from Germany and a couple from Kenya.

never look at a single poll, go to Real Clear Politics and see the average of all the polls, and look at the trends to see where he really stands at any given moment.

When you do that you will quickly see that Obama has been stuck in the low 40’s for about a month, averaging all the polls weeds out the outliers on both ends.

That’s probably some good advice. I will do that. I had settled on Rasmussen because I thought his were reliable. I told myself I’d take the good and bad of what his polls came up with. However, the past couple of weeks...I’ve really got my doubts.

I like Rasmussen, but all polling is subject to an occasional outlier. By averaging all available polls taken at any given moment, you smooth out those weird fluctuations, and can see the trends much easier.

That was the one I was talking about. He was bouncing around in the low and mid -20s. He goes on his, “If you really love me, pass this bill” tour and now he’s at -17. Something is going on. That many people haven’t changed their minds already.

OBAMA's CARTER PHASE2

Zer0's entering his 'Jimmy Carter' phase, where the majority of people begin to just tune him out and realize he is a failed president who's words no longer inspire and instead create malaise and concern for the nation. Now all we need is that Plains, Georgia rabbit from 1979.

The following are the average first term approval ratings of recent presidents from highest to lowest and the result of their re-election attempts:

John Kennedy - 70.1% (did not finish term - assassinated)
Dwight Eisenhower - 69.6% (re-elected)
George W. Bush - 62.2% (re-elected)
George H.W. Bush - 60.9% (defeated)
Richard Nixon - 55.8% (re-elected)
Ronald Reagan - 50.3% (re-elected)
Lyndon Johnson - 50.3% (did not run for second term)
Bill Clinton - 49.6% (re-elected)
Gerald Ford - 47.2% (defeated)
Jimmy Carter - 45.5% (defeated)
Harry Truman - 45.4% (narrowly re-elected)

Barack Obama - currently 39% (and dropping)

It remains to be seen what Obama's final average approval rating will be before his first term is over but as you can see, it is not looking good for him historically. Only Clinton and Truman were able to be re-elected with less than a 50% approval rating and that is only because they had very weak opponents (Dole and Dewey).

So long as the GOP puts up a strong opponent, it looks pretty dismal for Obama's re-election chances.
