As the debate over Texas Gov. Rick Perry mandating the HPV vaccine continues between Republican presidential candidates, a woman whose endorsement is coveted by all them, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, has her own complicated history on the issue.
In 2007, shortly before Perry issued an executive order requiring that schoolgirls be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, or HPV, that causes most cervical cancers, Haley was throwing her support behind a similar bill in South Carolina. At the time she was in her second term as a state representative.
State Rep. Joan Brady introduced the Cervical Cancer Prevention Act in South Carolina, and the Republican corralled more than 60 legislators, including Haley, to sponsor the bill. Unlike the executive order for which Perry is taking heat, this legislative mandate did not include a provision for parents to opt out of inoculating their daughters.
Within months, fierce opposition mounted, and legislative records back up accounts from sources who recall sponsors "dropping like flies" before a unanimous vote killed the bill on April 18, 2007.

But the main thing is this is a hit piece on Nikki Haley because she is a right wing conservative WOMAN!!! The last word WOMAN is what the left fears the most. They fear strong women like Sarah Palin, Nikki Haley and Michele Bachmann. They thought all women were in NOW.

I love how the left always talks about sexism this, sexism that, but they have no problem bashing women as long as they are conservatives.
When everyone else is using fear and misinformation, it is very hard to be the only one on the side of rationality. Unfortunately, Nikki gave in to the peer pressure in the end.

Yep, along with about 60 other legislators, she signed onto an idea that was not well thought out. Eventually the bill was unanimously rejected, so obviously information about the bill was presented, processed and every sponsor, including Haley, ended up rejecting what they once favored.

What it did was direct the relevant agency to add "apply via internet" to the methods available (mail, fax, in person) for requesting the state-issued opt-out affidavit. The opt-out itself was created by the Texas legislature, in 2003.
And, the reason the proposed HPV mandate of Haley didn't include an opt out. state law already had one, just like state law in Texas already had one.
Yeah!!! She should have swooped in like Governor Mighty Mouse and saved the day by mandating a vaccine by executive order.
She wasn’t governor and had no such power, but why should that stop her? It wouldn’t have stopped Perry, I’m sure.
But, alas in the end, she chickened out and didn’t attempt a coup of the entire government of SC in order to mandate a vaccine. Dammit...if only she could be more of a hero like Captain Gardasil!
Yeah, Airborne and Casual contact transmitted viral vectors are indeed quite different than something trasferred via sexual contact in a school setting.
I could see a state sponsored education campaign targeted to parents for the HPV vaccine, but it should stop there.
Who knows yet exactly what she did?

Perry’s involvement has been attacked mercilessly from every conceivable angle. Every conceivable one, no angle left out.
Therefore, to be consistent, whatever angle is used against Rick Perry...whatever one, no exceptions, can be used legitimately against Nikki Haley.
I don’t subscribe to the distortions that you use to describe what happened in Texas. I describe it coming from Perry’s standpoint, and I have proven that he did not, could not, have done what he did unless he believed the people of tx would welcome this addition to the school vaccine program. Otherwise, you would have to stupidly believe that he wanted to have the people rebuff him, that he wanted to be embarrassed for life that he had to backtrack when he heard the voice of the people.
That proves he would not have gone ahead, Merck or no Merck, let me repeat, he would not have gone ahead, Merck or no Merck, if he had not thought it would be welcomed Cancer protection for kids, not rejected and thrown back in his face as an embarrassment for all time to come.
Likewise, Nikki Haley obviously thought it was the thing to do. Let me repeat, she obviously thought it was the thing to do. She found out otherwise. Just like Rick Perry found out otherwise in Texas, to his everlasing embarrassment. And I have no doubt this episode is embarrassing to Nikki Haley.
The executive order route by Perry was in order to expedite the opt out, is what I understood.
Incorrect: that the Legislature had to override. No, it didn’t come to that. The whole thing was stopped before they needed to do that. It was the voice of the people, contacting their reps, demanding it be stopped, that Perry heard, before a vote was held.
Why are candidates speaking of genital warts in the first place???
The difference is that it was a bill not an Executive Order.
If Perry had gone about it the same way, instead of bypassing the legislative process, none of this would be an issue.
It would have been shot down in Texas (as his EO was) just like it was shot down in SC.
That is until they do some of their own studies on the vaccine and Merck. Then it turns the stomach.

It was a mandated program for the schools, with an opt out. It was mandated to be given along with other school vaccines, with an opt out for those choosing to opt out. People have distorted this to claim it was forcibly given to the kids.
In addition, none of it was ever carried out. It never happened.
Michele Bachmann, to her discredit, has helped to spread the distortions. And for what purpose, who knows, since she isn’t going to get anywhere, regardless.
Is there any way to recall this Commie filth from office? Haley needs to go. HPV is just far to important an issue. It’s not like the country is falling apart and everyone is losing jobs and their homes. I can’t tell you how many people spout off unsolicited about the Gardesil issue anymore. It has to be the #1 election issue for sure.
