Of course Obama is downgrading postal service. It’s one of the few constitutionally legitimate functions of the federal government.

Hey, libs, if Obama can’t manage to deliver the mail, how do you think he’ll do with heart transplants and brain surgery?

I don’t see anything in the Constitution about Saturday delivery.

he is an expert on everything don’t you know.

This isn’t his idea but I’d be very happy not to receive mail on Saturday. I get nothing but junk anyway.

Important stuff comes online or by express carrier.

The postal monopoly on first class mail, however, is not a “constitutionally legimate” function of the federal government. The creation of a monopoly for this insitutution is not mentioned, or even hinted at, a single time.

Imagine how much they would save if they deliver mail just once a month.

Obama’s Options for saving the USPS:
1. Go to 5 day a week delivery
2. Go to 4 day a week delivery
3. Go to 3 day a week delivery
4. Go to 2 day a week delivery
5. Go to 1 day a week delivery
6. Stop mail delivery

7. Allow renegotiation of union contracts

Gov. cannot manage a postal service, social security or medicare, but they want to manage PUBLIC HEALTHCARE?????

GREAT bumper sticker I remember from the 70's. "If you like the Postal Service you'll love National Health Care".
Boy could we use a reprinting of those now.

“or perhaps NO delivery?”

Wouldn’t there have to be huge Post Offices built to house all the P.O Boxes?

I wonder how many jobs will be cut by this move? One less day of junk mail.

Should be really easy to determine: 6 days down to 5 is a loss of 1/6th of the service. Should be 16% of employees that are cut.

At least, if it was about operating at a profit and not as a jobs bank...

I would be happy with ONE day a week mail service

I would, too, as long as other branches of the Government adopted to this less-frequent delivery. I just got called up for Federal jury duty - and the form I received had to be returned within 5 days. Sent by USPS Mail. If not returned in 5 days I could be found in contempt of court. If the mail was delivered 1 day a week, I might not get the notice for 5 days in the first place...

I can see the IRS having a field day with this as well - you have 5 days to respond to this letter regarding some obscure claim against you. Oops didn't get the letter for 6 days? Tough - default judgment - you're screwed!

IMO The Sunday NO DELIVERY currently violates the Establishment Clause.

It’s not a bad idea, it’s been floated before. But I seem to recall the first time it was mentioned it was a day other than Saturda (perhaps Tuesday?) I think that’s a better idea, in the event of those evil delivery notices left on your door that you have to go to the PO to claim. They need to be open one day when most people aren’t working.

The monopoly on 1st class mail isn’t specifically mentioned, but the Section 8 enumerated powers of Congress include “To establish Post Offices and post Roads”. In that sense, the USPS is indeed constitutionally authorized. The exact function of the Post Offices established is not defined in any detail, but the current operation of the USPS has far more constitutional grounding than just about everything else the Federal government does outside of the DoD.

We agree on that but the USPS would have collapsed long ago if it did not have the first class monopoly which was only added in the 1840s to smash competition from Lysander Spooner’s American Letter Company.
