Full title: Perry: "I Don't Think You Have a Heart" If You Oppose In-State Tuition for Children of Illegal Immigrants
Perry's response was forceful and personal. "I don't think you have a heart," Perry told his critics.
"If you say that we should not educate children who come into our state for no other reason than that they've been brought their through no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart," Perry said. "We need to be educating these children because they will become a drag on our society. I think that's what Texans wanted to do. Out of 181 members of the Texas legislature when this issue came up [there were] only four dissenting votes. This was a state issue. Texas voted on it. And I still support it today."

People need to calm down on the Luntz focus group. Obama will not be defeated by the votes of Freepers. It will be Freepers plus RINO’s plus independents. Luntz analyzes those other groups which is very important.
People can all bag on Romney but the bottom line is that he sounded more conservative than Rick Perry tonight on a bunch of issues. And it wasn’t just talk as he vetoed the instate tuition in Mass.
The bottom line is that a lot of us bought into some hype on Perry and now that we are seeing him in action, the results are less impressive. Frankly I wish a second tier person like Santorum or Cain would get some traction after tonight to provide a counterweight to Mitt.
That is because the Federal Government does not have the Constitutional Authority to pass a national Dream Act.
This is a State issue.
Texas almost unanimously supported the Texas Dream Act.
You got a problem with that?
The Texas legislature passed a veto-proof version of the immigration bill in question. Is Texas being completely misrepresented?
Here is the deal:
Illegal immigrants entering Texas higher education system are direct beneficiaries of a 1982 Supreme Court decision, Plyler vs. Doe. Parents in Tyler sued after the state began charging tuition for illegal immigrant children. The court ruled that Texas and the rest of the country must educate illegal immigrant children free of charge in public schools.
Some of the most vocal illegal immigration opponents dont oppose the decision. But they say higher education is different, because it is tuition-based.
Suit challenges law
A lawsuit was filed in December challenging Texas law providing the students in-state tuition and state aid. The students are not eligible for federal aid such as Pell Grants.
Attorneys for the Immigration Reform Coalition of Texas sued the University of Houston, Houston Community College and Lone Star College systems in Harris County District Court, but the case was moved to federal court. Its not like were swimming in budget surpluses, said attorney David Rogers. Its the responsibility of the government of Mexico to educate Mexican citizens.
You have no heart. Sorry.
“Perry and Texas took a bold and decisive stand on the issue”
At the expense of American taxpayers and their rights. ILLEGAL as in not here LEGALLY. Bottom ;line. All the rest is just lipstick on a pig - laws that should not be.
The other 49 states didn’t weigh in. You are a gateway state. The other 49 pay for your laws as your illegals fan out.
At least we have Arpio trying to do what he can in AZ - where’s your border defense? He’s giving speeches to LaRaza...
Clearly, the ‘Muslim and/or even the ‘shariah’ question’ is off the political table. Perhaps, after, we have our nominee; or, is this issue to be forever ignored - at our expense.
You think it’s probable? I do. Not picking vp by region, but by race. New world.
The fact of the matter is that Texas did not cause the problem, Washington did. Texas is dealing with the problem the best they can under the circumstances. Perry is a brave man for standing up for his State and for these children without a country. He isn't going to make many friends on this forum. Oh well, there's always Sarah Palin (who probably feels the same way as Perry, but isn't running).
“And even wears an apron that signifies...”
Can you give some more detail on that?
We ARE indeed reacting viscerally, but we HAVE thought it through. That’s WHY we are so upset.
Yes, it’s ultimately DC’s cluster that’s the problem. But granting illegals favors helps nothing.
Ya, it was on Hannity’s show. Hannity had to get Luntz to ask about Sarah. It was a site to see in a good way.
Great point. Texas is the damn gateway state for all these illegals and Bush let em all pass through during his 8 years. Perry told us tonight he’s for more of the same.
And if Perry liked the Arizona law, he could have had a similar one introduced last year in Texas.
If you Texans don’t wise up on this issue, your State will turn blue just as Rush noted last week. And if Texas goes blue, you’ll take the presidency with you as we can’t win unless we have Texas going GOP.
He's either been bought off, or is a mental case. No conservative in their right mind would support this guy.
He should have stuck with Gore.
You’re half right.
Thanks, didn't know. Well he'll have a long weekend to see how bad this hurts ol' Goodhair on the Sunday talking head shows and try to come up with some mighty great spin to try and take some of the sting out of Perry's major foot-n-mouth disease ailment. Of course this could become a full time job for Rush and the Perrybots around here.
We are talking about 1% of college freshmen in Texas. And they pay the same tuition as any other resident. They PAY it. If you're trying to cloud the issue with some type of reference to Pell grants and other reimbursements, you might have a leg to stand on. Albeit puny and lacking of flesh. Even there, these students have to EXCEED the talent of others to reach that distinct place in the competition.
You're just a Palin crony and hellbent on an agenda. Come on Norm. We know you. Just like 95% of the others on here claiming "I was leaning Perry and my friend was leaning Perry....BUT NOW...Ain't no way." Yeah sure thing. lol
Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain and Michelle Bachmann - you guys are our only hope.
Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain and Michelle Bachmann - you guys are our only hope.
Then their parents should have considered it when they came here ILLEGALLY!
Based on your sc, I’m guessing Eastern European background/ancestry. My stepfather spent 18 months in a refugee camp working 16 hours for a bowl of pasta for 18 months for a CHANCE to come to America (Serbian) and to get away from Tito.
I don’t like line cutters because they spit on the sacrifice legal aliens make to come to America for a better life. And I don’t like illegals. I grew up in CA and I have seen how they have bankrupted and ruined the state (along with the libs).
They don’t want a better life, they are criminal invaders and need to go home. I grew up with them too, that doesn’t give them the right to get instate tuition when American don’t get the same privilege. That is unconstitutional.
Here we go - the first attack on a palin supporter. When you cant dazzle’em with brilliance, baffle them with BS.
Look, Are illegals here leaglly? Y/N?
Does Perry want to educate them at taxpayer expense? Y/N?
If its such a small figure, YOU pay it.
Perry needs to come to Houston and take a walk on the Southwest side of the city. The illegals have turned the area into their own 3rd world country.Drugs, hookers, gangs, you name it’s there. Nightly shootings At one time this was one of nicest parts of town to live in.Perry is clueless about illegals in the state.
I'm not sorry except to say that as a tax paying citizen I have to tolerate socialist liberal's like yourself and others who are so quick to spend my tax dollars in any way you deem appropriate in your misguided estimation. You are part of the problem and not in any way part of the solution of curing the cancer that is eating away at this once great nation. Your kind sickens me to my stomach I'm saddened to say.
If you think we should treat these children like the criminals they aren’t,
- - - - -
Aren’t they?? Up until we moved out of state, I spent years listening to the local news and police scanners in So Cal. Well over 90% of the criminals on the crime report and the calls on the scanner were about 14-23 yr old illegal Mexicans.
One night we were actually surprised to see a white American teenage criminal. It is that rare.
If they don’t respect our immigration laws, they won’t respect any of our other laws either.
Only because your co-fans turned out in droves to lick the dead Perry barbecue, buddy. All’s fair in war. hehe
Texas is where California was in 1970 - the commercial wonder of the nation. But, just like California, Texas has invited the wolf to the dinner table.
Just as illegal aliens played a major role in destroying California, they will play a major role in destroying Texas but it won’t take 20 or 30 years because the trickle has become a flood.
Back to back shots on Palin? We’re talking about Rick here sport. Palin got nada to do with it.
Not giving them in-state tuition is not the same thing as treating them like criminals.
My daughter looked at a book the school counselor gave her about different scholarships. She looked through the whole thing and said, “Mom, I don’t think there are any scholarships for white kids.”
I told her she could say she’s a lesbian quadriplegic Native American, African-American Hispanic Jew...
One of her good friends is Hispanic. They both were invited to take part in some youth leadership conference in Washington DC. My daughter couldn’t go because we couldn’t afford it but the other girl (who unlike us gets free lunches; a family of four with both parents working full-time with good-paying jobs) was able to go. There was a write-up in the paper about how great it was that she was chosen to receive this honor, etc. There was a show on educational TV that focused on her and the other Hispanic kid in the school who is well-integrated into the American culture. The whole thing is to show off the Hispanics who have done well. We have no idea whether these families are legal or illegal, although I think my daughter said her friend is legal but has family members who are illegals so she supports illegal immigration.
These people are friends, and we are happy for their success. But we also recognize that because so many of the Hispanics in our area have just come across the border the kids are not well-integrated and there aren’t a lot of American success stories among them. That doesn’t fit the agenda. So those who do well have to be very visibly displayed and coaxed onward every way possible. Which includes lots of scholarships and awards that a non-Hispanic kid who was just as deserving would never get.
So who - in all that - is being treated like a criminal?
No, we were here to discuss issues - which until you went all PDSer, we were doing just fine.
You are so typical of the liberal Perrybots around here. I have no idea what you are trying to say here. Take a couple of Prozacs and get some sleep and try again tomorrow.
Perry said pretty much the same thing as Perry - it’s for the children.
Yes,I remember it well. :-)
I’m not sitting it out by any means, but I will go 3rd party. I WILL NOT EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER vote for Romney or Huntsman. I will vote against them and Obama.
So far none of the candidates are getting me excited. I like Cain but he has no traction. Perry is now out. Like Bachmann but she lost a lot when Perry stepped in. I suspect Perry will endorse Romney and Romney is a no go.
I don’t believe Palin will run. Puts me in a quandary, but I have to stand my ground on this one, I will not vote for the trash the GOP has been putting out. I cannot and live with myself.
The GOP is shooting themselves in the foot if they don’t listen to the revolution that is brewing.
How Texans spend their tax revenue is their business. Regarding fan out, it seems to be an issue of educated or uneducated illegals. I’m not sure which is worse.
Like I said, Texans had a veto-proof majority in passage of that bill. Maybe there’s a logical reason that made sense to the taxpayers of Texas.
Perry, Cain, or possibly Palin. What other options do we have?
Perry is a do-gooder statist, at best.
TO ME HE'S LIKE MEG WHITMAN. HE'LL SAY ANYTHING, DO ANYTHING HE THINKS WILL BRING HIM THE MOST VOTES IN THE MOMENT.
And just like Meg, he has no political sense or compass.
This man is not grounded in principle, he is only interested in what is good for him personally.
He's going after "the middle" with his illegal pandering. It's calculated and it's been ongoing for a long time.
To hell with Perry and his supporters.
Perry has intentionally encouraging millions of illegals to flood into Texas by aiding, abetting and pandering to them. Ya don't reward lawlessness GD it.
It's costing us hundreds of billions, choking off our hospitals, social services, welfare, jails, schools, and compromising and undermining our very electoral process etc.
Then he offers illegals coupons and incentives?
I've been told a thousand times, in California, all the illegals are the fault of Californians, and they deserve everything they get, yet in Texas, it's suddenly the feds problem, and Perry is just a powerless innocent by-stander.
All while illegals are having nearly 1000 anchor babies per month at Dallas Parkland Hospital.
Ya think anyone buys this crap?
It’s stupid things like this that keep ‘em comin’ and keep ‘em here. Gotta quit this crap and do away with the enticements!
No, they are NOT criminals.
They are children of people who broke laws (which are not being enforced) and who have not committed any crimes on their own. Most of these Children have never been to the country of their parent's origin and I guess we should just drive them to the border and dump them on the other side, huh?
Sorry, but this problem was created by the Federal Government refusing to enforce the laws, and these kids are victims of circumstance. But then I guess we should just take them to the border in trains and if they don't leave, just shoot them.
See this comment re: #177: for a clarification on his continued unintelligent comments.
Here we go - the first attack on a palin supporter. When you cant dazzleem with brilliance, baffle them with BS.
“And if Perry liked the Arizona law, he could have had a similar one introduced last year in Texas.”
He didn’t like it and is spinning what he plainly said months ago:
Build a wall around Texas until Perry stops catering to illegals? ;)
Kidding aside, Texas laws are having an effect on the rest of the states. It’s not just you. It’s the other 49 that have to deal with the fallout.
Of course I want Palin in and I think she would be an improvement by far to what we have now. But the states ALL have to do their part too. And that means stopping/ending laws that assist illegals.
