Video: Perry’s cringe-worthiest debate moment
Michelle Malkin ^ | 9/23/2011 | Michelle Malkin

I mentioned Rick Perry’s DREAM Act debate blunder in my round-up post.

It gets second place.

The cringe-worthiest moment, by a hair, was when Perry botched what should have been his most potent attack on Mitt Romney’s chronic flip-flopping. As I noted on Twitter when it happened, any random high schooler at the CPAC conference in Washington could have done better than this.

If this is how Perry’s going to take Obama on in debates, we’re in trouble. Someone inject him with some Red Bull and a dash of Herman Cain’s personality.
**snip**

Perry said he’s in favor of making English the official language of the U.S. Perhaps he should concentrate on mastering it before the next debate

Excellent observations, all of you.

That being said, I'd actually have to give an edge to GW Bush is speaking style and ability. GWB's gaffes were entertaining. Perry's just make me cringe.

I love Michelle Bachmann second only to Sarah Palin, but I don't see that she's ready for prime time just yet.

Santorum, Cain, Newt and Mitt are all reasonably good debaters. But Cain is the only one of these four who would make it to the next round in my opinion. The other three are old news. Newt can't erase his history of not being able to control his zipper. Santorum can't erase his record of not being able to even crack 40% in his reelection battle against the guy who is arguably (with Al Franken a strong contender) the dumbest member of the U.S. Senate with a penis.

As for Mitt, I actually like the fact that he's a Mormon. There is no other religious demographic in America which are such overwhelmingly reliable conservative voters. For every screaming foaming zealot who would vote against him solely for that reason, there are two more who would vote for him just to stick it to that rabid bunch, particularly in swing states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida. But he cannot erase his history with socialized medicine. If he was perfect on every other issue (which he ain't), that alone would be a nonstarter. Just as Perry's support of open borders in a nonstarter.

Huntsman? He's still the invisible man. He always will be. He would do better moderating a debate than being a participant. His politics would also be closer to the moderators than to the other participants.

Ron Paul is just and he's nuts as well. The nicest thing I can say about him is that he would have made a great president a century ago. But it is 2012 we're facing, not 1912.

He almost made Obama seem glib and intelligible.

You have to remember that this passed the Texas legislature (one of the most conservative in the country) with all but 4 votes out of 150 voting for it. You couldn’t pass hardly anything with that kind of support anywhere much less Texas.

You continue to provide very valuable information to non-border state residents about why it is NOT in the interest of the rest of the US to have presidents, and other politicians from border states, making decision about immigration for the nation as a whole.

Examples: George W.Bush. John McCain, John Kyl, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, and Rick Perry.

Border state politicians transfer their pandering and inability to deal with the illegal alien problem to the rest of the nation if allowed to do so.

Perry did awful last night, a real stink bomb, the Fred Thompson of 2012, once Sarah gets in the guy will be a distant 3rd or forth. When they coined the cliche “All hat and no cattle” they must have had Rick Perry in mind. I admire and appreciate his service to our country but he is a CINO because RINO today is not such a bad thing with the Pubbies even entertaining guys like Romney or Huntsman. I bet a dime to a dozen donut’s Mittens jumps out to the lead and Newt and Cain move up and Perry drifting away. Perry’s stumbling and bumbling would be ok if he was nervous but had good ideas, but to be a mumbler and have lousy ideas on immigration is a killer. He gets no bozo buttons from me for his stance on SS, so what not all that original a position or idea to articulate. This field is an adequate bunch of VPs sans Paul, Johnson, Huntsman and Mittens, Sarah is the one to lead the revolution.

>>>>>>I completely disagree, Perry could refuse to do anymore debates and still win this thing over Romney walking away. And make no mistake this is between Perry and Romney, there is no other choice.

You can't be serious. If Perry refused to do anymore debates he'd be laughed off the campaign trail. I've been calling this a two man race between Perry and Romney for quite some time and imo it remains that for the time being. Nothing new. But the level of unpreparedness that we witnessed from Perry last night has to concern all his supporters and defenders. Perry did good in the msnbc debate and okay in the cnn debate. While Perry had some good moments, overall last night was one of the worst debate performances I've ever seen.

In the first debate in 1984 between Reagan and Mondale, Reagan gave his poorest performance in a debate ever. He recovered and went on to beat Mondale in the second debate and trounce him in the general election. Perry can improve. Its not over, but lets not ignore what we watched on stage last night. A stumbling, bumbling Rick Perry. It was Perry's night to take it to Romney but he failed.

So true and it would make a great tag line!

Yeah, if he gave the grand arrogant lecture that we can’t ask this president any questions, yes, I certainly don’t agree with him either. I don’t need these people to tell me what to think or how to act. Just give me the facts if they have any.

What makes you think Romney will repeal Obamacare?

The repeal would have to come from Congress, and actually, the House has already passed a bill to repeal it. Of course, it died in the Senate.

So, a repeal of Obamacare would have to pass the House and Senate after the 2012 elections.

If a repeal did pass Congress in 2013, are you saying you think Romney would veto it rather than sign it?

sums up my views on Perry perfectly. Perry is freaking amazing in just about any other venue, but being mortal does have areas he is weak in, one of those being debates apparently.

True dat. ALL of dat.

LOL

I’m now more resigned to voting for imperfect Bachmann or Gingrich. Preferably the latter, character shortcomings notwithstanding.
These two candidates know their way around the legislature, and they are clearly conservatives. Best chances of getting cooperation. Least chances of appointing traitors to the SCOTUS.
If Palin jumps in, however...I celebrate.

1% of the population watches debates.

80% of the population will see the ads Perry runs that completely destroy Romney. All you Romney lovers are going to be crying when those hit the airwaves.

Lol, you're deluded. The debates are always the largest audiences candidates are able to address, and the debates receive the most post event coverage and discussion in all news media.

And some of Perry's debate statements will make fine TV ads for his opponents once they start running ads closer to the primary voting.

LOL, write in? Fine so you can stand proudly amid the rubble that will be all that may remain of this country, BUT at least you can say YOU stood fast for what YOU thought was right for YOU. Never mind the overall good and the need to rid ourselves of this festering cancer in the WH. As long as YOU feel good about YOU, that’s all that matters....right?

I don’t to descend into the realm of the liberal and name call but your position there is little difference between OZERO and either Romney or Perry indicates you are about as far removed from reality as is possible, OR you are a liberal plant here on the FR.

1.8% of the population watched that debate last night, that’s a fact.

how many people watch prime time television? because that’s where the political ads will be aired.

No need to go into why you like Rick Perry here, but I trust your reasons are for good, and I respect your right to like him for whatever reason he touches your life!

May God bless us ALL!

“Man, there are a bunch of farmers in the valley who would take you to task on that”
______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Ya. A barrier fence is gonna pizz “some” people off. “Some” of those folks have land that runs right to the border.

Guess what... Any good real estate agent will tell you to take caution when buying a home that backs up to undeveloped
land because you NEVER know what might be put on it.

You pays your money and takes your chance.

What happens when your next door neighbor sells to a family with loud obnoxious teens who leave empty soda cans in
thier driveway and then they blow into your yard.. etc.. etc
Their not doing anything illegal. You can’t call the cops.

You either STOP bitc#ing and put up with it.. or you sell and MOVE.

Same with border land owners. Famers.. Ranchers.. whatever. They complain about illegals crossing their land and
leaving trash everywhere.

Then... When a border fence was proposed... they said WHOA!!! we can’t do THAT. I’ll have to give up some land
for that. And it will “ruin” the historically open border
commerce.

Ok. Whatever. Put up or shut up. Or move. Or live with it. Or hire some unemployed Mezzican ZETA’s to protect you.

Mexico used to be stable... Border was stable too....
Nothing stays the same... Change happens... $hit happens...

No, I'm talking factual reality. Lets stay focused on last night. Perry gave a terrible debate performance. He has to regroup and get prepared for the next debate on Oct 11th. I see nothing wrong with posting that truth and neither should you.

I will keep defending Perry's record against the misfits on this forum, because even with his less than perfect immigration position, he remains a solid conservative who has done a good job as Texas Governor. Ignoring what happened last night serves no good purpose.
