Insult Obama? Not on this campus!
dailycaller.com ^ | September 23 | Robert Shibley

Posted on 09/23/2011 2:18:10 PM PDT by Berlin_Freeper

Insulting the president and other government officials is practically a national pastime in the United States. This is a testament to the freedom of our society; in some parts of the world, insulting those who govern earns you swift punishment, or at least official censorship. That isn’t the case in America — unless you live on a college campus.

Students at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) in Texas found this out the hard way yesterday when they erected a “free speech wall” — a recently popular way for students to highlight the importance of free speech in which students put up a freestanding wall covered in paper, upon which anyone can write anything they want.

This is a misleading article. The object that was removed was the word "F*CK". When you use profanity to express an idea - you are not conveying an idea, but are creating at atmosphere of obscentity. A professor protested to the "F..k Obama" note someone wrote; and removed the offending topic. This being a college wall, full of the maturity and social conduct typical for many college-age kids - this word was used repeatedly. As this is a misdemor, each incidence of this word had to be removed - and rather than remove every incident; the students removed the "Free Speech" wall.

To call this a case where you cannot insult the President, is a lie. You cannot publically display profanity.

I'd be willing to bet that very same professor would have wrote "F--k Bush".

You obviously didn’t read the article. Not misleading at all. The ONLY F word this liberal POS professor objected to was the F obama. You are dead wrong about what can be posted.

Maybe the professor was trying to make that exact point. Pretending to only being offended by the slur on Obama. I read the whole article, and learned a little case law.

I’m not sure what you say is accurate. Did you read the second paragraph. They seem to be okay with using that same verb with regards to, “Nazi punks.” So if the word you are talking about is allowed elsewhere, you can hardly contend that’s the reason it’s being removed.

Taken directly from the article:

Prof. Kirk does not appear to have been offended by the F-word itself, however — only at its use in an insult against the president. That’s the only one he cut out, after all.

"This is a misleading article. The object that was removed was the word "F*CK".

FAIL...

From the article:

"But just hours in, the free speech wall was vandalized by a professor — yes, a professor! — who was offended that someone had written “F**K OBAMA” on the free speech wall. Students being students, the “F-word” was written on the wall many times about many different topics, but apparently the only expletive that offended this professor enough to take action was the one referring to President Obama.
The police stated that since the professor was offended the students were breaking the law. The professor was only offended by the statement about the President as is indicated by his action of cutting out the word in the statement about the President ONLY!

The consistently bad reviews over eight years is more an indictment of the school’s governance than this particular clearly wretched faculty member. If he behaved like this during his probationary period, he should have been fired. If not, and he ‘slipped by’ until he had tenure, he has clearly ‘retired on the job’.

Not just this professor, but any school that collects tuition and harbors faculty like this should be avoided. Some good advice on optimizing the funds expended on acquiring a credential used to be posted for free, now it has apparently gotten enough traction that the author took down the site and sells the material as a “manual” : http://www.garynorth.com/public/729.cfm .

Tell it to the Berkeley Free Speech Movement circa 1964. The freedom to spout obscenities is how this whole fiasco of exhibitionistic "free speech" began, predating pernicious political subversiveness. I think they have a memorial in honor of the F-word at Sproul Plaza.

The police told the students that since Prof. Kirk was offended by some profanity on the wall, the students were engaging in “disorderly conduct,” a misdemeanor, and had to cover up all the swear words on the wall or take it down. Realizing that this would make a mockery out of the purpose of a free speech wall, the students simply disassembled the wall.

This is one of those "Question Authority" times. A professor being offended equates to disorderly conduct? I think not. The students allowed a mockery to be made of their project.

Wrong. If the banner had read “I think Obama is unqualified to hold the office of POTUS, and the worst president America has had in 50 years” - nothing could have been done.

The Professor would have been told to pound sand.

But, if the poster had written "Obama is the worst POTUS - Ever!"; the Professor would have been unable to do anything - except cry and stomp his feet. By using the F-bomb, you gave him the weapon he needed to remove the term.

It is the result of the 1960s hippie college movement to bring the most foul language into the mainstream.

It shows that college students back then and today lack basic communication skills, so that they can not communicate without reverting to gutter language, the very thing that higher education was supposed to prevent.

The article is not misleading. The focus of the article is the fact that the Professor only went after the F word directed at Obama.

If you want to create your own news item and ignore certain facts while putting the emphasis of what happened about something else, then you are free to do so.
