With Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry under attack for supporting tuition breaks for children of illegal immigrants, former Gov. Jeb Bush on Tuesday offered some solidarity by calling a similar proposal in Florida “fair policy."
In 2001, Perry signed the first state law in the country that allowed the children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates. Former Florida state Rep. Juan Zapata said the Texas law was "the model" for legislation that he repeatedly—but unsuccessfully—pushed in his state. Two of his key allies then are now among the GOP's most sought-after stars: Bush, the subject of perpetual draft movements to run for president, and his fellow Floridian, Sen. Marco Rubio, a sure bet for the GOP's vice presidential shortlist in 2012.
“I think that is a fair policy," Bush said in an e-mail to National Journal on Tuesday, adding that the students who benefit from the tuition breaks find themselves in the United States through “no fault of their own."

IMO, when Congress has nothing to do involving their enumerated powers, they should adjourn and go home. If the president needs them back in session, he can call them back in session. Otherwise, they can live in the mess they have created for the rest of us.
I am much more concerned about the mindset which this discloses. That mindset is that somehow, a fast growing constituency's narrow interests are more important than the interests of society as a whole. It is this same mindset which has allowed the pink mafia to redefine marriage in several states and DC.
It is this same mindset which, if not checked, will eventually turn America into the same type of third world sh*thole as these illegals fled.
This is why we have a legalization process in the first place. It is also why the process is not easy or cheap. My son-in-law (born Japanese) went through the process to get his permanent residency. He has more years ahead paying taxes and obeying our laws to demonstrate his worthiness to become a U.S. citizen. There is no doubt in my mind that he will do so, in spades.
BTW, he first came to America and fell in love with our country as a high school exchange student. Nobody offered him in-state tuition when he graduated and decided to stay for college. He paid full fare, even though he would have met the Rick Perry requirements had he been an illegal.
If any of the illegals want to go through the same process which my son-in-law (and millions of others did) to become Americans, then I will welcome them. But most of them just want a special privileged path.
False, general revenue only accounts for about 6.4% of the education funding (sales taxes).

Haven’t seen that but I don’t watch him that much. But I did see his interview with that phony Santorum who basically said it was okay for illegals to attend college, just that they didn’t deserve in-state tuition. Hannity gave him an opportunity to elaborate or back off that position but he didn’t. He had that deer in the headlights look.
In other words he is just as FOS as Perry on the subject after pompously attacking him at the debate.
I’m for work permits too, but how do you address the issue of citizen children? I don’t have an answer to that but with current US laws, if you allow someone to come work here and they have a child, they ARE going to stay, because that child is an anchor (hence the term “Anchor Baby”. And those people who come to do “the jobs Americans don’t want to do” are the same people who need vast amounts of $$$ in public assistance, which is a large reason we are at the brink, financially. I haven’t heard a solution to that.
No one seems to point out that the citizenship provision in the Texas Dream Act is extremely weak. They only have to promise to start the process. They don’t have to prove they are starting it and they don’t have to actually start it. They only have to say they will start it. That’s it.
which president is more likely to tighten that and build in more accountability and tracking?

I agree. If you’re not in support of a fence and support of eliminating benefits to illegals, you’re not worthy of the GOP nomination.
Michelle Bachmann and Herman Cain have stated no funds for illegal aliens. There are a lot of conservatives running for other positions who oppose in-state tuition for illegal aliens, we just need to support them.
Why don’t we just wake up and smell the triple-espresso?
The GOP is not a conservative party. They’ve been in power how much of the past thirty years? Abortion is still legal in every state until the 20th week, gay marriage and gay rights are fast becoming the norm in the Land of the Freelovin’, the country is being rapidly subsumed into Latin America against the wishes of an overwhelming majority, the national debt has EXPLODED, the federal government and the N.E.A. have a death grip over our children like NEVER before...

About the only good thing you can say for the GOP is taxes, but even that’s got to be nuanced.
Of course Rick Perry isn’t the only poseur among the GOP stars. Posing has become THE NORM.

Fair enough - people who are OK with OR take the position that it is impossible to enforce immigration law can hardly be said to be conservative in any meaningful sense, be it for reasons of defeatism or bad faith.

I will settle for the candidate that has the least horrid policy, I.e. even an opportunistic sleazeball like Romney who will likely preserve the status quo is better than candidates such as McCain, Bush or Perry who relish pushing for ever more aggressive non-enforcement of immigration law.

Oh, I did not realize Romney supports the existing law and deportations of the 30 million illegals and their second generation children.
I will be watching his answers more closely in the future.

How does Romeny plan to round up millions and ship them back? Open the FEMA camps ala Japanese internment? THAT stain on our history is why I dont believe mass deportations will EVER occur.
