(Reuters) - Democrats want tax hikes to be the first item negotiated in "super committee" deficit-reduction talks, trying to force Republicans to confront an issue at the heart of this year's budget fights, sources told Reuters.
The tough stance by Democratic members of the powerful 12-member congressional panel reflects the party's wariness that Republicans might try to sideline the issue of revenue increases in the negotiations.
"They've raised the idea of doing taxes first," a Republican aide involved in the discussions said on Friday on condition of anonymity.
The panel has the task of finding ways of cutting the U.S. deficit by at least $1.2 trillion over 10 years. If it fails to agree on a plan by November 23, automatic spending cuts will be triggered, beginning in 2013.
If Democrats hold firm to their demand for taxes to be discussed first, that could make it hard for the committee to make the tight November deadline. Congress is due to vote on the panel's recommendations by December 23.

Of course! They need more money to funnel into “green” companies owned by Democrat bundlers and donors. Oh, and they need more money to buy guns for Mexican drug cartels.
This was the whole point.
It should be declared a non-starter but then, they already promised to vote on whatever came out of the thing.

OK, we’ll discuss tax hikes as soon as you agree in writing to eliminate the Department of Education and use the department’s funding for deficit reduction—except that portion for grants and scholarships which we’ll return to the states as block grants.

And how does one go about collapsing the system? Taking a page from the book of radical left wing community organizer Saul Alinisky, the Cloward Piven Strategy suggested putting the welfare system to work, against itself.
According to Cloward and Piven the teaming majority of Americans who technically qualified for welfare programs did not, in fact, register to receive the aid. Cloward and Piven claimed, at that time, that approximately 8 million people were receiving some form of welfare, and they believed that as many as 20 million, in total, could be mobilized and placed on the public dole.
Cloward and Piven theorized that by mobilizing even a small percentage of the remaining 12 million to demand their entitlements, the welfare system would be swamped with more cases than it was designed to handle, obligated to dispense more money than it was able to give out and that the ensuing result of this chaos would be "a profound financial and political crisis" that would unleash "powerful forces … for major economic reform at the national level."
"Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules," Alinsky wrote in Rules for Radicals. “When pressed to honor every word of every law and statute, every Judeo-Christian moral tenet, and every implicit promise of the liberal social contract, human agencies inevitably fall short. The system's failure to ‘live up’ to its rule book can then be used to discredit it altogether, and to replace the capitalist ‘rule book’ with a socialist one.”
That’s the Cloward Piven Strategy in a nutshell. Sabotage the system by overwhelming it… discredit the system once it is destroyed… and institute more of the policies that you used to destroy the system in the first place.

GDP something like $14 Trillion. Government revenue around $2 Trillion. Government spending at around $3.5+ Trillion PER YEAR. There is no way to add a tax equal to 10% of GDP to close the deficit gap, without cratering the global economy, nevermind the US. They have to cut spending. There is no other choice.
The tax issue is not about budgets. It is about getting Republicans to commit political suicide. It is “read-my-lips” ver. 2.0
The "Wimpy" school of economics... "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today..." There was a great, greasy burger joint in Kansas City called "Wimpy's." They were closed on Tuesdays.

In the good old days, Democrats loved to Tax and Spend.
Nowadays, they just Spend and Tax.
I just love the way the lamestream media immediately start using the Democrat lingo. They now have no problems using “revenue increase” for a tax increase!

Actually a truer statement could not have been said. Democrats are actively campaigning for higher taxes. But whether they can convince the public during hard economic times remains to be seen. Or will the Democrats and Obama become more Walter Mondales (barely getting even their base)?
