Gov. Rick Perry's team pushed back Sunday on a Washington Post story charging that a racial epithet was displayed for decades on a hunting property leased by the Texas governor's family.
Perry's team says that the governor's father Ray painted over the name -- a holdover from the area's long cowboy culture -- in the early 1980s. That conflicts with the account of a total of seven sources -- who spoke on the condition of anonymity -- who told the Post that the offensive name of the hunting grounds was written on a flat slab of rock at the entrance to the property and was visible during the 1980s and 1990s when Perry launched his political career. One source said the word could be seen as late as 2008.
In a response to First Read, Perry Communications Director Ray Sullivan disputed the accuracy of those accounts.
"The rock was obscured in 1983 or 1984 and remained so," he said. "Named interviewees in the story corroborate that. The story has no named sources seeing the name on the rock in later 80s and 90s claim and those unnamed sources contradict one another."

A setup attack on Cain? This kind of stuff goes on all the time. Cain knew exactly what he was doing.
Hey Perry attacked ME in the last debate. Now I intend to live up to that 'hard hearted' brand. OBVIOUSLY somebody in Perry's family did not think that rock sign was in good taste because somebody painted over the name. I consider it a cheap shot against Mr. Cain to be calling him names over the answer he gave because it 'paints' an unflattering picture near Perry.
BUT as to what Cain has done that I really find offensive is his apologizing over a 'gay' in the military getting boooooed.
White men are lucky ~ they are never Uncle Toms.
Some of them are mind-numbed, robot-like, knee-jerk Leftwingtard jerks but not all.....
Believe me, this crap is done all the tme to OUR candidates and if Cain is a real conservative, he would have recognized in an instant and not let it happen. Poor little Cain? He’s been around the block a few times.
They do nothing.
They support gang culture!
When he was an executive it probably happened one or two times a day regarding subordinates. People do this ~ his answer was pretty much stock standard stuff.
I’m afraid you’re absolutely right. If anyone knows anything about Rick Perry, they know he’s not a racist. That’s not enough to get a person elected but it’s the truth. I’m disillusioned with Mr Cain and I’m sorry about that. I’ll tune Rush in tomorrow to see what I should think. :)
Free Republic has a clear statement of policy just beneath the post buttons when one composes a response:
NO profanity, NO personal attacks, NO racism or violence in posts.
The only time I've seen anything here even remotely objectionable in that regard was back in summer 2009. There were some crude posts about Obama's children but those were later found to be deliberately planted by non-FReepers (liberal outside agitators) and the thread was pulled.
I care. Cain screwed up. Expect no apology from me for that opinion.
You pass on the lie. Perry did not use the N word.
Exactly right.
This atmosphere of feigned insult is the most basic catalyst for division in this country - and giving in to it only hastens our demise. One of the most diverse sectors of our country is the construction industry - every race and color is represented there, and as men do, rough and racial commentary is not just used, but preferred - By and large, it is not racially charged, unless it is truly racist in intent. The lion's share is just rough banter, and is generally appreciated. That is more the tone America has always had, and it is vastly different than the environment engendered by these PC police.
It seems that many today have forgotten that childhood rhyme:
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.
“The media will do ANYTHING to keep the candidates from focusing on the failures of Obama!!!”
The point that needs to be realized in all this.
“Not even the old west and not that old”
Good grief.
I posted this on another thread; fits here too:
I believe the reason that Cain lit into this rock issue and implied that Perry was therefore potentially racist (guilt by association) because he hunted on a leased property that had the offending rock for some years (even though Perrys father had painted it over), was to try to get back in the good graces of his fellow black brethren whom he had dished just a couple of days before by saying they were brainwashed. What better way to deflect criticism of himself for using that term against his black brothers than to attack a whitey (Perry) for racism.
Not a good look here for Cain. Big mistake, and I dont even like Perry as a candidate, but this was a below the belt attack on Perry, and Cain shouldnt have taken the media bait and then used it as a vehicle to deflect the criticism that has been aimed at himself over his brainwashed remark against his fellow blacks. Bad form.
Up to this point, I believed Cain was the only Conservative candidate. However, any Republican that allows the media to manipulate them this easily cannot be a viable Conservative. He blew it.
Western MD has had 2 mountains renamed, one is now “Negro Mountain” and the other is now “Polish Mountain” and this has occurred during my lifetime.
Three guesses what they used to be called.

Far as I know, nobody ever thought twice about the names as “racist”; they were named long, long ago and that was all there was to it.
[I also happen to live a few minutes away from a “similar” pond mentioned in the article..grew up ice skating on it every winter]
So...when are all the rappers gonna remaster their albums to purge that word?
I also said this on another thread. Cain said he could get a third of the black vote. Well not without showing his true colors to them. He had to make up for his “brainwashed” remark somehow.
Conservatives are sick and tired of our candidates being attacked with this garbage. Even more offensive when its supposedly another conservative.
Did you say it perhaps? If so your lame attempt to blame someone else continues to be lame.
In reality the use of 'gate" had to do with entrance or cut off the road that took you to the lease site.
I even wrote a federal regulation once that used the term "gate" to mean that and not a physical item.
The rest of their reportage is probably of equal quality ~ not worth diddly squat.
What that means is that for cold hard facts on this story we have to rely on Ricardo and his baby-daddy, and those diesel dykes at the Post can just go pound sand.
