Gov. Rick Perry's team pushed back Sunday on a Washington Post story charging that a racial epithet was displayed for decades on a hunting property leased by the Texas governor's family.
Perry's team says that the governor's father Ray painted over the name -- a holdover from the area's long cowboy culture -- in the early 1980s. That conflicts with the account of a total of seven sources -- who spoke on the condition of anonymity -- who told the Post that the offensive name of the hunting grounds was written on a flat slab of rock at the entrance to the property and was visible during the 1980s and 1990s when Perry launched his political career. One source said the word could be seen as late as 2008.
In a response to First Read, Perry Communications Director Ray Sullivan disputed the accuracy of those accounts.
"The rock was obscured in 1983 or 1984 and remained so," he said. "Named interviewees in the story corroborate that. The story has no named sources seeing the name on the rock in later 80s and 90s claim and those unnamed sources contradict one another."

Please explain to me how it is insensitive to paint over an offensive word? If I were a man of African descent I would be saying that Perry’s father did a good and noble thing.
Actually, there was a peak of the same name in Australia. The name was changed in 2008. The Aborgines protested the name change. There were a number of geographic locations with the same name that were changed prior to this.
I don't need to examine myself because I refuse to walk on egg shells.
Before I get lectured to, that person lecturing me better make sure their backyard is clean.
Cain is the one who pretended to be offended.
This is Perry’s issue, not anybody else’s, yet his boosters still make it about Herman Cain. This is a competition here. If Mr. Cain is expected to defend Rick Perry every time he made a fool of himself, well that’s a full time job in itself.
Longtime hunters, cowboys and ranchers said the place was known by the name as long as they could remember, the Post reported. The name on the rock was given to mountains, creeks and rock outcroppings across the country in earlier times, the Post report said.”

Perry didn't own the land and Cain is saying Perry is insensitive. If Clinton “owned” a land under that name then he would be scrutinized but again, Perry didn't own the land, he hunted on it and his dad painted over the offensive rock.
What issue? Perry hunted on land where someone, not Perry, not his father, painted the word Niggerhead (the name of a flower btw) on a rock. In what universe is does this disqualify him from being President?
Cain has been through this situation hundreds, if not thousands of times. He said “insensitive” ~ and it’s possible to be “sensitive” to the concerns of others even if you don’t share those concerns.
This isn’t about rap artists???!!!...
or “institutional racism,” which has been around since America was founded, and a topic I can take you to task on!
But I won’t draw attention away from the real issue, unlike what you, some others on these posts, and the liberal media are trying to do! I will focus on Cain’s TRUTHFUL answer!
Cain’s answer was a TRUTHFUL answer...HE IS A MAN OF COLOR! You did not hear him say Rick Perry was a racist and he NEVER leveled any racist charges against him! He merely pointed out, from “his perspective,” that it is insensitive! Period!
This whole thing is a diversion...the media just stirring the racism pot and MANY of you are blindly falling for it!!! The media will do ANYTHING to keep the candidates from focusing on the failures of Obama!!! Wake-up and examine your own selves and your own comments!!!
“Perry didn’t own the land”
I’ve seen that argument and it’s really weak. So because he didn’t actually own the land, it was OK to drive past a sign on a rock that someone had painted “Niggerhead” on?
Short anecdote: as a military family, my own family traveled a lot through the south in the early `60s. This was before interstate highways and franchises.
We were very hungry late one afternoon and stopped at some small restaurant off a two lane road. My father saw something on the door and shooed us all back the car.
Later I asked him what happened and he said the sign said `Private Club, We Reserve the Right etc. etc.’ and we weren’t eating there.
He was the only cadet in his class willing to share his tent with one of the first black cadets at old Oklahoma A&M, and caught some flak for it. He was also one of the few to get a regular Army commission.
Back on topic, we weren’t renting that restaurant. He just refused to even eat in a place that denied service to his fellow troopers.
If Perry’s father painted over the sign before agreeing to rent the place, good on him but that’s not the way I read it, especially when their actions are excused by, “Well, they were just renting.”
And this about Perry. Leave Cain out of it. All you Perriers are the ones making something out of it.
Chris Wallace and Cain are all for Romney. Consequently they are trying to tar Perry and hope some of this BS sticks.
Anyone notice the BLACK UNEMPLOYMENT RATE UNDER HUSSEIN?? Jackass Hussein tells blacks to take off their slippers, so the media has to find another DIVERSION from Hussein's EPIC FAILURE.
Cains answer was a TRUTHFUL answer...HE IS A MAN OF COLOR! You did not hear him say Rick Perry was a racist and he NEVER leveled any racist charges against him! He merely pointed out, from his perspective, that it is insensitive! Period!
This whole thing is a diversion...the media just stirring the racism pot and MANY of you are blindly falling for it!!! The media will do ANYTHING to keep the candidates from focusing on the failures of Obama!!! Wake-up and examine your own selves and your own comments!!!
If it's not an issue, why have you posted to this thread so many times? And no this doesn't disqualify him from being President; it's his debate performances that did him in in my book.
Oh, by the way, when's that movie "Incendiary: The Willingham Case" coming out?
I’ve posted because this is a thread to discuss issues. Don’t you understand that?
Cain pointed out how he didn't feel Perry responded fast enough in covering the rock and that was “insensitive” but again, Perry didn't own the land.
What I don’t understand is in my response to use of the word “issue”, you say “What issue?”, and now you are saying that “this is a thread to discuss issues”. Either something is an issue, or it is not an issue.
Quote you “This is Perrys issue,” unquote.
We’ll leave Cain out of it when he stops commenting on something he has no facts on.
Cain pulled the race card.
Why are we surprised?
I knew it would come out sooner or later.
