WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- A 20-month-old southern Connecticut girl was mauled to death after being attacked by as many as three pit bulls.

The child was visiting her aunt's apartment in West Haven when the attack occurred Friday, authorities told WVIT-TV. She was pronounced dead at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Some small dogs can be vicious. I have a friend whose 10-pound un-neutered male Maltese has bitten her numerous times. But he is very smart and can be sweet so she loves him

I would never want a Cocker Spaniel.
IIRC, they are quite prone to snapping at people.

If one wants a large dog, the best I ever had was a Rhodesian Ridgeback.
When living in west Tennessee, I was given one as a puppy.
I had never heard of the breed.

When I moved to Slovakia, I found them to be quite common there.
I understand that they were originally raised to hunt lions.

Other then that dog, my best were ALWAYS mixed breeds.

Years back my sister had a white shepard...something about them make them larger than most shepards. don’t know what it is, but that seems to be the case..

I second the ‘anything with spaniels in it’ recommendation. I am a big fan of springer spaniels and almost feel guilty having the two I have now and not having any kids for them. These two are the ultimate kids’ dogs.

“This has nothing to do with them being pit bulls. There are just as many deadly attacks by collies, golden retrievers and beagles.”

Do you have statistics and links to back that up?

3 pit bulls in an apartment must explain why the unattended child didn’t drown in the backyard pool.

There is a real problem here with parents who take their children to visit people who have pets and don’t take exceptional precautions to know both the pets and their potential interaction with a child.

They never mauled to death the little girl before.

They were such nice dogs.

And for the guy who wished for a buck everytime they say that, ME TOO! I’d be rich and retired.

The attack occurred Friday evening while the child was laying on a blanket on the floor of one room of the third-floor apartment, the New Haven Register reported. The dogs had been in another room but somehow got out. It wasn’t clear whether anyone else was in the room when the attack occurred.

Why? My folks got a little Cocker Sp. when my Mom was 6 months pregnant w/me. It was one of the sweetest, most patient dogs one could own! She was my walking coach when I was learning to walk, and ran along w/me. My Mom was a teacher, and another teacher gave her a little male kitten that she couldn’t take care of. Buttons (the dog)was even gentle w/the kitten!

Buttons didn’t even growl or snap when either my sister or I pulled at her hair or tail when we were little toddlers! (I was about 2 1/2 yrs., and sister was 1)She would lay down and watch over us when we were playing.

DogsBite.org -

City and county animal control departments in at least 20 U.S. states report that pit bulls are biting more than all other dog breeds. These states include: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

The often-quoted myth that pit bulls "do not bite more than other breeds" is categorically false. In addition to the fact that pit bulls are the leading biters, the pit bull bite is also the most damaging, inflicting permanent and disfiguring injury.

Hell, I'd just like a link to a news report of a fatal beagle mauling.

You say:"This has nothing to do with them being pit bulls. There are just as many deadly attacks by collies, golden retrievers and beagles."

Saying a thing does not make it so. Your statement is absurd and I suspicion you know it.

Those tactics are right out of the Communist Party Handbook: When you tell a lie, make it a big one and say it often. Most people will believe it.

Sad to see this on FR.

In addition, one pitbull can be dangerous enough, but more that one and they too often revert to the pack behavior.

See the chart on this link.

On FR, when one is being ‘clever’ - and/or sarcastic, it’s protocol to so indicate

People need to remember dogs see a baby as another
critter, parents who let little ones play with dogs
are not being responsible.
