Now the Raisers may actually get and retain good, modern management. Al singlehandedly kept the franchise in the 1970s mode of play and kept them from winning. It used to be the winningest franchise of all professional sports, but has been largely irrelevant for the last 20 years. That said, Davis still was/is not the worst thing about the Raiders. That distinction goes to the lowlifes who sit in the stands. Raider fans are the worst class of people, and just when NorCal had been nearly rid of them, Davis moved the team back and the fans came wriggling out of the trash and filth like cockroaches.

They did win division titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002 and a conference championship and Super Bowl berth in 2002.

As a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan, I’ve always detested Davis. But, in his passing, I cannot say anything bad about him.

I wish him well in the afterlife and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

RIP, Mr. Davis.

Years later congress got involved. The NFL(and Davis) benefitted big time.

Let's see if I understand this correctly--you are pleased because the U.S. Congress stuck their noses into private industry decisions? Furthermore, you posted this as a reply to yourself on a public thread in a conservative forum. Small blessings the duplicate thread was pulled.

Interesting exchange on Twitter within the past hour:

Jim Irsay Al Davis was a wild card maverick, the NFL Brando! His litigious ways against his partners did tarnish, but his visionary ways still shine/RIP

Richie Field @JimIrsay Al’s litigious ways paved the way for your pops to pack up the Mayflower and head to Indy.

Yeah, that’s what I understand (made it in marketing). He’s not someone whose career I’ve followed but I think his sister was the “brains” of the Operation. But, I’m just not sure.

Always hated the Raiders but admired Al Davis.

This is a loss to the NFL.

I admit my first response to reading that Al Davis was dead was..
‘Who did it?’
RIP, Mr. Davis
And thanks for the vivid memories. Especially of 2002, where I lost my ass, but that is for another thread.
Now there are not many around of his stature.

Marketing for AOL I think - he had a load of stock options and cashed out at the height of the Internet bubble when AOL stock would run up to 70 and then split twice a year

Mister, I don’t know where you’re from but you sure don’t sound you’re a Raiders fan. I don’t think you know much about Raiders’ fans... or Oakland for that matter. So, I say blow-it-out-your-ass!

I disagreed with some of Al Davis’ recent decisions, particularly when he used his #1 pick for Jamarcus Russell, then stuck with him for three years when it was obvious Russell that was fat, dumb, and lazy.

But some of Al’s decisions were great: Getting Daryle Lamonica from the Buffalo Bills; Picking John Madden as a head coach in 1969; picking Tom Flores to replace Madden. One of his best decisions wasn’t obvious at the time: Getting Jim Plunkett as a backup. When Dan Pastorini was injured early in the 1980 season, Plunkett took over, and the team won two Super Bowls with Flores as the coach and Plunkett as the starting quarterback.

I got frustrated sometimes as a Raider fan, but almost everybody admits that Al Davis knew a lot about football, and helped shape the AFL/NFL into what it is today.
