Netflix Abandons Plan to Rent DVDs on Qwikster (Hallelujah!)
The New York Times: Media Decoder ^ | October 10, 2011, 8:00 am | BRIAN STELTER

Abandoning a break-up plan it announced last month, Netflix said Monday morning that it had decided to keep its DVD-by-mail and online streaming services together under one name and one Web site.

The company admitted that it had moved too fast when it tried to spin-off the old-fashioned DVD service into a new company called Qwikster.

“We underestimated the appeal of the single web site and a single service,” Steve Swasey, a Netflix spokesman, said in a telephone interview. He quickly added: “We greatly underestimated it.”

Mr. Swasey said that the Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings declined an interview request. But in a statement, Mr. Hastings said, “Consumers value the simplicity Netflix has always offered and we respect that. There is a difference between moving quickly — which Netflix has done very well for years — and moving too fast, which is what we did in this case.”

I think they are in trouble. No clear path forward.

Well, that dog didn’t hunt. I found the Samsung BlueRay player at Wal-Mart for less money than at Sears. It said on the box a USB Wireless Router (not included) would be needed. I have a Linksys USB router and the guy in the store said if it didn’t work I could get one of theirs. I hooked up the Samsung and my wireless router wasn’t recognized. Also, the on-screen setup kept searching for a Samsung Wireless Router. I went back to Wal-Mart and told him what happened. He said any of their newer routers would work so I bought a Linksys. Took it home and the Samsung wouldn’t recognize it as well. I go to the manual and it says I must us a Samsung USB Wireless Router. I called Sears and they don’t carry them in stock. Neither does Wal-Mart.

I returned both the Samsung and the Linksys router and got my money back. I told them that if they don’t start carrying the Samsung router they’re going to be getting most of these BlueRay players back (unless the buyers don’t care about online access). There was also a Sony BlueRay player but it also required a separate router. I passed on it. I’d gone through enough for one day.

See my post #83. For all the movies we watch I’ll stick with renting them from our rental store for $2-5 a pop.

I have a Netgear wireless router. My Samsung BD player has never had a problem with it.

OH! My BRD player came with a little USB dongle.

If you decide otherwise, FReepmail me and let me know, and I’ll mail you my wireless dongle. I don’t use it.

Thanks for the offer but I think I’ll sit this one out. I also looked at Wii but the movie resolution isn’t there according to the guy at WM, and I’d have to go Xbox for a lot more $. Not only that but it’s another ‘thing’ and my electric strip is already filled up. I think I’m trying to do too much with not enough real need to do it.

I didn’t get my Roku until early this year, it was brand-new, I took it out of the box, plugged it in, and haven’t touched it since. You Tube was just available.

Glad you got lucky, although I don’t understand it... /g

Whatever you do, don’t delete the current Youtube channel/player from your Roku - you won’t be able to get it back now. Youtube is simply not offered now, according to Roku’s own website.
