Yesterday's September jobs report was a welcome surprise, a signal that another recession may be averted. With 103,000 new jobs in the month and an upward revision of 99,000 for July and August, the jobs picture looks less bleak than it did a month ago. More Americans also started looking for work and the labor force expanded by 423,000, according to the Labor Department's household survey.
However, the unemployment rate held steady at 9.1%, some 6.2 million Americans have been unemployed for more than six months, and the economy is producing far fewer jobs than you'd expect in a typical recovery from recession. Over the past six months the U.S. economy has created an average of 72,000 jobs a month, roughly half the pace needed to chip away at the jobless rate. The hardest hit have been minority workers, with the jobless rate for blacks still 16%, Hispanics 11.3%, and teens 24.6%.
As it happens, the biggest one-month jobs gain in American history was at exactly this juncture of the Reagan Presidency, after another deep recession. In September 1983, coming out of the 1981-82 downturn, American employers added 1.1 million workers to their payrolls, the acceleration point for a seven-year expansion that created some 17 million new jobs.
The difference between then and now isn't the magnitude of the recessions but the policies the U.S. pursued to restore growth. In the Reagan expansion, spending and tax rates were cut, regulations were eased, and government was in retreat. Today, we've had a spending and regulatory boom, the threat of higher tax rates, and a general antibusiness political climate. Policies have consequences.

On Thursday, I heard that the unemployment numbers would NOT be good for Obama. Sources indicated that the monthly figures would show only a meager addition of perhaps 56,000 jobs. Very bad.
Then the number came out -- and it defied all expectations! Whoop! Whoop! A massive increase of 103,000 jobs!!!
And 45,000 of them were Verizon workers who already had jobs but who just hadn't been showing up very regularly.
Seems to me that this whole thing is a total Big Lie.

I think a never mentioned big difference in the present is that many of the "Lost jobs' were never really jobs in the first place. As the economy expanded, venture capital rushed to not-really-businesses, and in major corporations, layer and layers of superfluous "managers" were added. Because the growth was mostly based on fiction, yet billions were flowing, these useless layers play-acted at "doing something". They never actually had jobs in the first place, but the companies were so awash in fake money, their uselessness never appeared on the bottom line. I saw this in my F500, my sister saw it in hers.
These are people who never should have been hired in the first place.
They never had any skills in the first place, but had a big enough studenty loan to fit in. They are genuinely baffled as to why they are out of work.
We are locked into a death spiral depression and nothing is going to change that for at least 2 years... if then. It all depends on the electorate and their love of communism.

My business has been successful for 38 years and obama has just about killed my dream. You just have no idea how bad things truly are... and they are getting worse by the day.
When I was dumped from my long-term career several years ago, I turned my part time business into a real one. The cheap Dollar saved me. Now almost half my business is export, bringing money into the country.
Consider that the Internet has made the World a small town. As a manufacturer or vendor, you can be right across the street from your competitors, and next door to your customers. If you can find something people need or want in some obscure little niche the Big Guys cannot be bothered going after, you can pull it off. You probably will not get rich, but you can eat better than hot dogs and Kraft dinner, and have a warm place to live..and for the next few generations, that's as good as it might get, unless we can put a stop to this Amateur Hour Farce in DC.
How long will this go on? We see the unprepared "Star" fumble and forget his lines. He gives the finger to his audience and pisses himself onstage. The rear seats have emptied. People are drifting out of the auditorium. The few remaining squirm in discomfort and embarrassement as the Fool (PBUH) goes from bad to worse to pitiful to tragic to revolting.
