Family calls 911 after getting lost in corn maze (Massachusetts)
GateHouse News Service ^ | Oct 11, 2011 | Sam Trapani

Posted on 10/12/2011 5:57:28 AM PDT by dead

DANVERS, Mass. — An evening stroll through a corn maze took a confusing turn Monday for a family that became disoriented in the rows of corn and called 911 to ask for help.

A father and mother with two children used their cellphone to call Danvers Police at 6:32 p.m. reporting that they were lost in the Connors Farm corn maze. Danvers Officer Justin Ellenton responded to the call and entered the corn maze with Connor’s Farm manager Ritchie Potter to search for the family.

Within nine minutes of entering the maze, Ellenton and Potter found the family. The family had almost found their way out; unbeknownst to them, they were only 25 feet from the street. Police were not releasing the name of the family.

The 7-acre corn maze is a challenging course, said owner of the farm, Bob Connor. This year’s course with a design cut into the corn of the “Salem Village Headless Horseman” may be trickier than years past Connor said. Other designs from previous years included “Eastwood,” with Clint Eastwood’s face emblazoned through the corn, and "Family Guy."

“We had a few people who got a bit lost last year, but they found their way out,” Connor said. “There is no wire or fence around the maze, so if they really want or need to get out all they have to do is listen for the sound of traffic.”

Connor said that the farm has a night security person on hand every night who stays until everybody leaves.

“We make sure there are no cars left in the parking lot. We don’t want to leave anybody behind in the maze,” Connor said. Connor had just left the farm for the evening when he got a call from a friend who had heard on the police scanner that somebody was stuck in the maze.

“They were a really nice family. We offered for them to come back on us and try the maze again – but I think they had enough,” Connors said.

I heard the 911 call on the radio this morning and I’m sorry but this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

My husband and I go to corn mazes every year and I find it quite hard to believe that no one else was in the maze and no workers were present. The husband claimed on the 911 call that they closed the maze and the lights were out. The police were called at approximately 6:30pm...although sunset in MA, not pitch black.

Plus, who takes a 3-month old baby to a corn maze?

Not as bad as calling 911 to complain about getting cold fries at McDonald’s,but close.

This story is reminiscent of the day Al and his family Gore moved into the vice=presidents digs. He decided to take a walk through the woods adjacent to his new residence.

He was gone for hours and had to be led out by a contingent of secret service. He was lost.

How clueless can people get? Does no one know how to rely on clues from nature to find direction anymore? The position of the sun, moon and stars, sounds, wind direction are often dead giveaways.

I'm not sure which is worse...the couple that called 911, or the news service that felt this merited a story.

They should have waited for the "Children of the Corn" to come and help. On second thought, maybe that's why they were worried enough to dial 911.

Yeah, but I wouldn't want to walk through them (end up with a lot of cuts and scratchs) if I didn't have to. I'd just put one hand (virtually) out against one "wall", and keep it there while following the maze until I came out.

Many urban (and shockingly many suburban) dwellers know nothing of such things.

There you go. Local news is reporting that the family is from Everett, which is a pretty gritty urban suburb just north of Boston. This family can probably navigate through a maze of humongous gas storage tanks, but are totally lost when there's no pavement or concrete beneath their feet.

And although this is a silly story, let's not look over the fact that it's emblematic of the sh*tty, scary direction in which this country is headed: a family freaked out and resorted to calling in outside help at taxpayer expense to get them out of a "problem" they could've solved themselves with the simple application of common sense and self-reliance. The husband of this family should chop off his manhood and turn it in to the local authorities. He won't be needing it again.

Truer words were never spoken. This happened a couple towns over from where I live. Central (M)assachusetts has been invaded by yuppy scumbags and McMansions. We’re talking about people that own homes in the NE without fireplaces. If and when the SHTF these people will be cannibalizing each other in their little Penny Lane neighborhoods.

Of all the stories spinning around that day, I don't remember that one at all. My favorite was Hillary demanding the VP's office because of it's location and not being allowed to have it.

Lost in a corn maze. Decision tree:
1. Walk between the stalks of corn to get out
2. Get the government to bail us out. Call 9-1-1

I now fully expect someone, in the near future, to call 9-1-1 to rescue them from a stalled escalator.

I have some compassion for these people. It is not as silly as many 911 calls. A friend of mine who is a fireman told me some horror stories about the calls they HAVE to respond to.

My guess is these people probably felt at least a little bit embarrassed.

Sounds like a pre-planned set up with the corn maze owner to boost the popularity of the maze. No one is stupid enough to get lost in a corn maze when all you have to do is walk in one direction through the corn till you come out. It was a set-up.
