Now any Mexican drug gang member who can raise $500,000. He too can live in America when it gets too hot for him in Mexico. He can move here and set up shop.

****It’s $500,000 cash down, not a mortgage on a $500,000 house.****

What if they can’t pay back the loan sharks from where they came from? Do the loan sharks get the Visa? Another way to import Mafioso types from around the world?

I am assuming only 1 family would receive visa’s for each house purchased.

Most sane people would assume so. But the government regime that Schmuckie is a big part of is no longer sane, so I'm assuming nothing.

As opposed to now where he has to win a diversity visa lottery or just waltz across the border?

What the hell is wrong with these “conservatives” that we donated to and voted for in November, 2010? How stupid can these conservatives be...in this case teaming up with a vile, evil hard-core leftist like schmucky schumer? And to do what?

Rush, Mark Levin and Jim DeMint...hope they hear about Lee, if they haven't already. Lee has to hear from us, the people who sent him some money and a vote, and tell this traitor to the conservative cause that he must NOT cooperate with any leftist...LEFTISTS ARE THE ENEMY! Is Mike Lee this stupid or is he weak? Either/or, we should let him know how We The People feel about weak, sell-out “conservatives.” Email, write, call this guy and let him have it.

What’s he up to? Does somebody then get to bring the entire family?

YES...they get to bring in their spouses and UNLIMITED children under 18.

And then in a few years spouse can bring in his/her parents, etc., etc. Families would pool their money to get on Uncle Sams gravy train. How much do think a nice house costs in Beijing or Mexico City? Not cheap. 500k is nothing for a nice piece of property in Florida and citizenship for the entire extended family over time.

well this would certainly be legal immigration... and anyone who can afford a $500,000 home probably isn’t going to be asking for government handouts like welfare...

I am missing something? this sounds like something conservatives could get behind.

It wouldn't take much for a family to pool their money under one name and get the house and legal residential status. Then begins the chain migration of family members to the USA. That any Republican would sign off on this is treasonous...the home price market will come down if they are unaffordable for Americans, we should not be importing buyers. $500k in the Bay Area buys you a shack studio apartment, but that same money gets you a mansion in other parts of the country.

Crazy, eh. What is a Republican doing as co-sponsor for this awful bill. What a sell out!

Any one who can afford to buy a 1/2 million dollar house, is unlikely to require welfare. I would have less problem with these type of immigrants, if vetted properly for background, than illegals crossing the border, with little education, anchor babies and drug smugglers.

A lot of jihadis can afford a $1/2 million house.

Actually, if you follow the link to the WSJ article, you can buy a house for $250,000 and invest the additional $250,000 in other real estate.

Warren Buffet thinks it is a great idea. However opponents include, "Realogy CEO Richard Smith, say it's an unnecessary measure as foreign buyers have shown they don't need incentive to make purchases."

I don’t know much about Lee, other than he is a Republican from Las Vegas. The market in his state is in the dumps, but you don’t correct one problem to cause bigger and longer term problems.

And which is why I stipulated a criminal background check. When I applied for US citizenship 40 years ago, they not only did a criminal background check on me, they also took finger prints and questioned me about political goals.

As for jihadists using this route to enter the country, it is far cheaper to wade across the Rio Grande.

It probably won't stop them, it will just give them a place to go. Frontmen can buy and take them in.

I don’t think the jihadists are anxious to fork over half a million for each occurrence just to get a visa. It is far far far cheaper to get a visitor’s visa or even a student visa to enter the country for express purpose of terror acts. Note that all 911 terrorists entered the country in that mode, legally. So I do not subscribe to fear in this particular initiative. The open border is a far bigger concern to me.

You admit the 9-11 terrorists entered the country legally on visas, but you have no concern over this?!

I believe any one of them would have passed a criminal background check.

This will open the borders to large-scale criminals from Mexico, and many other countries.

I don’t think you caught on to my point. What I am saying is there are many modes in which terrorists can enter the country, legal and illegal. I am concerned about them all.

My point is that I am least concerned about those foreigners who are willing to fork over half mil for one family visa. It is far cheaper for any terrorist to enter as visitor.

My question to you is, how do you propose to stop terrorists entering legally. Do you want to ban all visitors from every country? Note there are jihadists in every country, including UK, Norway, Sweden, Germany.

No, I do not want to ban all visitors. I just don't want to sell off our country to fix a market that should have not been tampered with in the first place.

I do not want to give a criminal leader one more opportunity to buy his/her way into this country and own property here.

I realize that not all people purchasing property would fall into this category, but why open one more door. Let the market correct itself.
