Look out for this guy [Rick Perry], I’m telling you. When Romney kept insisting Perry let him talk and sounded whiney in doing it, the Texan finally looked at him and said, “Have at it.” So he uses a marvelous Southwest colloquialism to give Romney permission to proceed. That one may go down with Reagan’s “There you go again” to Carter. Never mind politics, American public life has not seen this kind of camera presence since maybe John Wayne. Men like him and women admire him. And he seems to be getting used to the debate format. On or off stage, he’s got a commanding and theatrical presence.

A modified consumption tax is much fairer, but it in practical terms would have to include rebate provisions to keep certain groups, such as the elderly from burning down Washington. It's still an invasive tax, but it can be made a lot less so than an income tax, which is always invasive.

My thoughts exactly. The federal income tax, in all its forms, is an abomination to Freedom.

"Funny, I just watched Morris defend the plan and he is imminently persuasive."

He never mentioned retired people. All of these explanations that I have seen make the same mistake. They are only about working people. I'm retired, and trust me Cain's 9-9-9 is a disaster.

" Even poor people will have a net reduction in taxes because the SS and medicare taxes will be gone."

Retired people already don't pay this. But under 9-9-9, we'll pay 9% on our food and prescriptions? Plus 9% on our meager Social security, which we bought with taxed income? Screw that!

Well, good video, but I still think that a simple flat income tax would be better than introducing a whole new sweeping sales tax on top of the constitutionally-protected income tax. Why would we want to get stuck with TWO major types of federal tax. Seems like the income tax alone is enough of a problem. Why add another so we have TWO major tax-system problems to deal with?

I think there may be a lot of advantage to having a sales tax INSTEAD of an income tax, but to get that you have to repeal the 16th Amendment. It would be suicide to create a new sales tax without first repealing the 16th Amendment by passing a new Amendment that would allow gradual abolishment of the income tax and allow Congress to put something else in its place (in this case a sales tax).

Perhaps you are right that 999 is a hard sell.

But, Morris argues that because manufacturers will have much lower taxes, the market will force them pass the savings onto consumers — so prices will be about the same.

Think of the alternative of four more years of the Marxist. Have you noticed how sky high food prices are now? We need pro growth economic policy or our economy is toast.

Not sure, but I imagine that under 999 there wouldn’t be a tax on Social security income at all. Where do you get that in the plan?

“Why add another so we have TWO major tax-system”

You support the 15 percent flat tax and wonder why add a consumption tax into the mix.

The fair tax advocates have a method to the madness. They argue that a sales tax places the burden of taxation on the person’s choice. The more you consume, the more you contribute to the treasury.

If you don’t want to give your money to the government, then you are encouraged to save.

Lot of people saving their money is good for economic stability and builds wealth assuming that it is invested.

The sales tax is only taken out once. So used cars are now highly desirable.

I was kidding...of course I am reading it. That is why I added lol at the end of my statement. It sounds a lot like Sarah Palin’s energy plan.

Well, as I said, it looks like there’s a lot of advantage to the sales tax INSTEAD of the income tax but not ADDED to the income tax.

It sounds good to me and I wish some of the naysayers here would give it some real thought instead of voicing their knee-jerk anti-Perry stuff, which is getting really old around here.

I know people who say we should unite all want us to unite behind THEIR man, but how about stopping this trashing of a good candidate.

It’s pretty obvious (at this point, anyway,) that there are 3 real possibilities left: Cain, Perry and Romney.

We know we don’t want Romney so maybe we need to back off the hate on Perry.

That was then, this is now.

The country is ready for major tax reform. The conservative rank and file is ready to push for major tax reform.

Big diff from 15 years ago.

I’ve been impressed with Cain’s 999 plan. I’ll review Perry’s plan as thoroughly.

What I take out of Perry presenting this plan, as a political matter, is that it demonstrates quite clearly that everyone who is running and who is involved with the campaigns has data showing that the time is NOW for major tax reform.

That’s a very good thing. And if we don’t get it this time, we likely won’t have a chance again. It will be game over.

See, if his plan is good, we can just take his ideas and get the candidate of our choice to work them into his plan. (Oops.)

Perry won’t mind, will he? After all, what we all really care about in the end is what’s best for the country.

Yes. These two plans are not going to mutually exclusive.

If they are the type of thing that can be melded into an even better plan than is on the table now, no reason that can’t happen.

And, hey, ideas are not the province of any particular candidate. In my view, Perry could come up with the best tax plan in the world and all that means is we now have the best tax plan in the world to try to get implemented. It doesn’t necessarily mean to me that Perry is the man who can do (or who otherwise should be President).

Also, the more I analyze and read up on the NRST part of Cain’s 999 plan, the more I think it is not only tolerable, but good and then necessary. We MUST broaden the tax base (make more people taxpayers) and the NRST is about the only way to do that and do that quickly enough to forestall the taking class from going over 50% of the population.

Support your man. But there’s no need to add on your personal insult of those who find other candidates worthy of consideration.

They are thinking for themselves and reaching a thoughtful conclusion just as you are.

I don’t see how proposing a plan makes the proposer the best one, much less the only one who can get it implemented.

As Forbes’ candidacy shows, these ideas have been around for decades. I’ve said this about 999: it builds on decades of conservative push for major tax reform. And so will Perry’s plan.

I like the 999 plan, but I wouldn’t vote for Cain just because of it. First, he has to be competent in all areas to be President. Secondly, even as to 999, I have to conclude Cain has the leadership qualities to get it passed, including the connection with the American people that will be needed to do that.

Otherwise, I’d just urge the candidate I thought could get 999 passed to take it or a similar plan up as his own and go for it.

I personally don’t think Perry is going to be able to engender the rapport with the American people that he would need to get his plan passed, even if it’s great.

So, if he’s got good ideas, but can’t win the nom, whoever does win should work those good ideas into his platform.
