Herman Cain’s Shallow and Contradictory Claims
Commentary Magazine ^ | Peter Wehner

Posted on 10/21/2011 5:38:59 PM PDT by ventanax5

In an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan (which Alana wrote on earlier this week), GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain spoke out on two contentious social issues–homosexuality and abortion. Let’s deal with each in turn.

On homosexuality, Cain claimed that it is a “choice.” If there are any other factors that go into determining one’s sexual orientation, Cain didn’t name them.

From my understanding of things, there is no single, simple causation when it comes to sexual orientation. For example, there is no “gay gene” that we know of. (The much-hyped 1993 study by the National Institutes of Health didn’t withstand scrutiny. A later study published in Science reported that the “data do not support the presence of a gene of large effect influencing sexual orientation.”) But this doesn’t necessarily mean homosexuality isn’t genetic at all; it could be a trait that arises from the interaction of genes.

How one’s sexual orientation is determined remains uncertain and still clouded in mystery–but it is probably a combination of nature and nurture, the result of a complex interplay of factors (which may include hormones, including those that develop during gestation; genetics; brain structure and hardwiring; and environmental influences).

Here is the truth about Cain and abortion:

Yesterday I wrote two posts about Herman Cain’s stance on abortion, which may be read here and here. One of the good things about blogging is that it allows you to shoot from the hip, which allows instant commentary and feedback on news that the traditional media cannot provide. However, it is also sometimes one of the bad things about blogging, in that it allows you sometimes to shoot before the facts are all in. Having considered the information I received via email over the last day, I now realize that calling Herman Cain “pro-choice” was not just wrong, it was disastrously wrong, and for that I am sorry.
I have come to understand that Herman Cain has in reality done far more for the pro-life movement than I ever have. For instance, he donated $1 million of his own money in an attempt to encourage black voters to vote pro-life. His 2004 Senate campaign made life a central issue. His work opposing abortion – especially among the black population – has led many leftist organizations to denounce

There is nothing objective about your posting and never has been. WTF do you think you’re kidding?

He doesn’t like his spam posts challenged and comes back with a gratuitous and baseless broad brush smear as a response. It’s like debating Snakehead Carville.

By bashing Cain you perry folks are only helping Romney.

According to his place in the polls, Perry is beyond help.

Joe Biden said that in a speech once. He said the most important thing was a three-letter word: Jobs.

I’m conservative both fiscally and socially, and I don’t like Herman Cain either. I can agree with him on a few things but not on most. Repeal all current taxes before we consider new ones

MORGAN: But you've had children, grandchildren. If one of your female children, grand children was raped, you would honestly want her to bring up that baby as her own?

CAIN: You're mixing two things here, Piers.

MORGAN: Why?

CAIN: You're mixing --

MORGAN: That's what it comes down to.

CAIN: No, it comes down to it's not the government's role or anybody else's role to make that decision. Secondly, if you look at the statistical incidents, you're not talking about that big a number. So what I'm saying is it ultimately gets down to a choice that that family or that mother has to make.

Not me as president, not some politician, not a bureaucrat. It gets down to that family. And whatever they decide, they decide. I shouldn't have to tell them what decision to make for such a sensitive issue.

So the Commentary article and all subsequent out-of-context attacks on Herman Cain's staunch stance for life are cynical distortion.

As for homosexuality being a choice, homosexuality is a choice.

Prove otherwise.

It's rammed down our throats by the homosexual fascists like the author of the article and President Gaga.

Herman Cain is not buying it. Most Americans don't.

No Cain supporters have been viciously trashing and smearing Perry. I am tired of it, but I have not trashed back and neither have the other Perry supporters.

I think we both have slung arrows at wrong targets.

My wrong arrow: Uncharacteristically for me, I posted immediately upon glancing over the thread. Mistake. I mistook Commentary Magazine for Commonweal Magazine, the one of the Catholic Left, and for this I do apologize.

Your wrong arrow: You evidently thought I was attacking Cain. I am a full-fledged, full-throated supporter!

I guess it's Friday mania.

You have that straight. I for one am tired of seeing Governor Perry viciously attacked by Paulbots, Bachmann, Romney, and Palin supporters. If Perry is so far down, why are they still smearing him?

From my understanding of things, there is no single, simple causation when it comes to sexual orientation.

Regardless of what one might want to do or think about doing the act is always a choice, so Cain is right.
