In Memoir, Rice Tells of Clashes With Cheney
NYTimes ^ | 10-22-11 | Peter Baker

*snip*

First as national security adviser and later as secretary of state, Ms. Rice often argued against the hard-line approach that Mr. Cheney and others advanced. The vice president’s staff was “very much of one ultra-hawkish mind,” she writes, adding that the most intense confrontation between her and Mr. Cheney came when she argued that terrorism suspects could not be “disappeared” as in some authoritarian states.

In November 2001, she writes, she went to President George W. Bush upon learning that he had issued an order prepared by the White House counsel, Alberto R. Gonzales, authorizing military commissions without telling her. “If this happens again,” she told the president, “either Al Gonzales or I will have to resign.”

‘I, on the other hand, thank God and am so very grateful for Pres. George W. Bush, his unqualified love for and loyalty to America, his relentless resolve for our safety, his deep honor for the Office, his abiding love and support for our great troops, among many other things....
God bless and protect Pres. Bush and VP Cheney always.’

Starwise, soooo well said!! I share these sentiments; we were blessed to have W as President!

Knowing the political slant of the HYTimes, I am reserved about criticizing Ms. Rice based on a "book review."

I may be bucking the knee-jerk trend here, but I respect her too much to toss her under the bus just for this article.

I think it was more that she was over her head for some reason,
given her alleged credentials as an abuse magnet in academic
administration, implying that she was trying to do the right things.

Bush's fault? Perhaps, but only for not dumping her when she was
found wanting.

(In the BHO administration, she'd be a genius, warts and all.)

As far as personality goes, "character is what you are in the dark".

And I'm not impressed with what is coming out of the shadows.

Ditto about GWB, Starwise. Loved seeing him and Laura next to Nolan Ryan at the Rangers game tonight. Class act couple all the way around. Miss me yet? You betcha.

But the comments on this thread that Condi was a quota hire are reprehensible and borderline racist.

They aren't borderline racist. They are flat out racist.

Such racist trolling is common to any thread involving Condi in recent years. It's repulsive, denigrating and against posting policy.

Regarding the book, it's clear from this press report (and those of other memoirs) that W had very strong perspectives to draw opinions from, not wallflowers or yes men.

That's critical in a successful administration and in many ways it was. Their views were heard but, as Bush famously said, "I'm the decider."

I appreciate the service Condi, Cheney, W and others gave to this nation in a very difficult and challenging time.

I agree with you. Some of these comments are outrageous.

It is the human condition that females are much less likely to choose violence than the male of the species (Kipling notwithstanding)

This has been the way of the world since creation and there are very few Maggie Thatchers as an exception.

So IF someone is looking for a reason other than just a policy difference, I would finger sex.

Absolutely! Some of the comments here on Condi Rice are totally uncalled for. Regardless of her moderate leanings or how she thinks ideologically, she did serve her country with great honor. I’d rather have her, President Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others back at the helm at the White House right now - adults who knew how to run a country. O’s administration is a complete joke and a laughingstock!

out of her league
When do we get a plain old white guy as Secretary of State instead of an absurd female or minority? Stop this politically correct bs! By minority all you need to see is Colin Powell with his vindictive backstabbing via the Valerie Plame mess. What a over rated turd he turned out to be!

Wow..... I figured out the whole Muzzie thing in a month by reading Jihad Watch. It seems that before invading Iraq and for years afterwards the GW Bush inner circle had little idea what the Sunni vs Shite dynamic is. How difficult is this to figure out?

They missed 911. CIA missed the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Now we have John Brennan with Obama and Holder and Clinton and Napolitano singing please don't be beastly to the Islamists.

Condi is part of the CFR wherein Brzezinski and Gates in their 2004 paper called for negotiations with Iran.

An existential struggle on natural law and the Condis of this world think diplomatic niceties can solve the problem.

The Islamic Jihad is eternal until the whole world is Muslim. This is the stated goal of Islam and Islamic imperialism ever since Muhammad trod the earth

How hard is this to figure out? Muslims have oil otherwise we would consider them as stupid as the Indian tribes that Christopher Columbus met on Hispaniola

And yet Saudi owns half the current government and all the former government. A thesis of Robert Baer, Sleeping With the Devil.

Cue the photo of Cheney with the wide brim hat giving the death stare to Obama. GWB was in the photo also and I believe it was taken in one of the Congressional Houses.

Robert Baer-—
I read one of his books. He is one of the good guys and is not anti-Israel so I like him. He knows from personal experience how low down low the Muzzies can go to get their Islamic rocks off
