Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich agree to Lincoln-Douglas style debate in The Woodlands
Houston Chronicle ^ | 10/24/2011 | Richard Dunham

First, there were Lincoln and Douglas.

This year, we have Cain and Gingrich.

The two Georgians seeking the Republican nomination for president have accepted an invitation from the Texas Patriots PAC to meet in The Woodlands on Nov. 5 for a free-wheeling and moderator-free debate on the major issues in the 2012 presidential campaign.

The two participants — former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich — have gained ground in the polls following their performance in the first eight debates of the GOP campaign season. But Gingrich in particular has been critical of what he considers “gotcha” questions from reporters and the nasty tone of the most recent debate in Las Vegas.

“This event is a response to remarks by Speaker Gingrich regarding his frustration with the format of the other presidential debates,” said Bill O’Sullivan, a Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC volunteer. “We believe this is the best opportunity for candidates to have substantive discussion since the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.”

Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas held a series of debates in 1858 when they were running for an Illinois Senate race. The debates became famous for the in-depth discuss of issues and the high level of political discourse. Democrat Douglas defeated Republican Lincoln in the 1858 Senate race. But Lincoln defeated Douglas and two other candidates in the 1860 presidential race.

The Cain-Gingrich event, sponsored by the Texas Tea Party Patriots PAC, will be held at 6 p.m. CST on Nov. 5 at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center. The Patriots are based in The Woodlands.

The best thing about this is the contrast between this style of debate and the garbage that the Drive-bys do...both of them think well on their feet...though Newt I think is the best debater of all. How I would love to see him debate Obama!

I’m voting for Herman Cain for President. If he is nominated by the (R)’s, so much the better.

I am not going to settle for Romney.

I trust they will webcast the debate AND allow C-span to air it as well.

Did they invite any other candidates?

Newt will be in his element, the professor. It really should be quite educational.

um... this might be a huge mistake for Cain.

Gingrich is a phenominal debater... and has nothing to lose, while Cain has everything to lose and little to gain from this...

I can’t believe Cain would agree to this.

I would presume that Newt is going to debate Romney?

This is an excellent strategy to introduce America to the GOP ticket in 2012, in Texas, no less! I am very happy.

If debates were the deciding factor in elections, (which they are not) it would be bye bye Cain.

This should be good. I've been to Woodlands, TX, northwest of Houston, and it's beautiful.

Nevermind - I thought they were going to literally debate out in the woods, turns out it’s in The Woodlands Texas. My bad

I can't believe Cain would either, it will not end well for him.

Unless there are some very strict stipulations in the rules Cain got put in.

This is great! Hope it is televised. If nothing else it will sharpen Cain’s debating skills. I like both gentlemen. A lot is said about Newt’s “baggage” but is it any worse than McShame’s? Don’t forget what Jimmy Carter said way back then: a single thought is as bad as the deed itself (or something like that). True Christians have to agree with him. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone. Is anyone getting it or am I casting pearls before swine? In other words. I would vote for either Herman or Newt - both would be better than anyone else parading before us at present. Bring it on!

I do not trust Newt alone because of his personal failings. Herman Cain has none of those, but he lacks the political skills of Newt. A Cain/ Newt ticket would be the smartest in many years, and would blow away anything the Left could put forth...0bama/Biden? LOL. Bring it on!

RE: A Cain/ Newt ticket would be the smartest in many years

One of them will have to establish residency in another state (they’re both Georgians ) if they want to avoid complications with 12th amendment.

Also, I’m not sure how the rest of the country will view TWO GEORGIANS on the same team...
