Cain responds to sex harassment allegation
Washington Examiner ^ | October 30, 2011 | Byron York

Posted on 10/30/2011 7:06:28 PM PDT by markomalley

Herman Cain's campaign headquarters has released a response to a story, broken this evening on Politico, that in the 1990s two female employees of the National Restaurant Association "complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain," who at the time was head of the trade group.

Calling the story "thinly source allegations," Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon said: "Since Washington establishment critics haven't had much luck in attacking Mr. Cain's ideas to fix a bad economy and create jobs, they are trying to attack him in any way they can."  Gordon did not address any of the specific allegations in the report.  Asked for a more specific answer, the campaign did not provide details.

Here is Gordon's complete response:

Inside the Beltway media attacks Cain

Fearing the message of Herman Cain who is shaking up the political landscape in Washington, Inside the Beltway media have begun to launch unsubstantiated personal attacks on Cain.

Dredging up thinly sourced allegations stemming from Mr. Cain’s tenure as the Chief Executive Officer at the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, political trade press are now casting aspersions on his character and spreading rumors that never stood up to the facts.

Since Washington establishment critics haven't had much luck in attacking Mr. Cain's ideas to fix a bad economy and create jobs, they are trying to attack him in any way they can.

Sadly, we’ve seen this movie played out before – a prominent Conservative targeted by liberals simply because they disagree with his politics.

Mr. Cain -- and all Americans, deserve better.

Cain is likely to face questions about the matter on Monday.  He is scheduled to appear at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington in the morning to discuss his 9-9-9 tax plan, and then speak -- and take questions -- at the National Press Club at lunch.

Until the primaries are finished the current front runner is in flux and Herman Cain was only front runner in polls which change by the day. Trying to turn this Cain attack into some kind of advantage for other candidates is what is ridiculous. None of the candidates is immune to opposition attacks from vested interests, political and apolitical, founded and unfounded attempts at scandal. Reality has always been lurking for all of the candidates and is probably the biggest reason we have the slate of candidates now running. Cain should have dealt with this at the very beginning of his run because it was an inevitable given that it would be used eventually. The other candidates had best wise up and get ahead of whatever they may be vulnerable to.

I’m going to assume that they are bound by the non-disclosure agreements that these “women” apparently broke.

In the corporate world, preventing accusations of sexual harassment
is an enormous focus of upper management
and HR and the legal department.
Sexual harassment is taken very seriously
and is not tolerated in the workplace.
Period.
Employees from top to bottom are drilled on proper workplace behavior.
Many make employees must attend a yearly seminar where the
code of conduct is reviewed.
Every large company has an employee manual on appropriate workplace behavior.
Most corporations, probably smaller businesses ,too,
have compliance procedures already in place for dealing
with accusations against employees ,
ranging from counseling
for the first offense
and more punitive measures, including firing , thereafter.
Many of us have been through the yearly drill.
Cain should have known better than to put himself
in any type of situation
that could be construed as harassment.
The fact that the company paid off the women and silenced them ,
makes it seem like much more
than “ Mr Cain said I looked pretty.”
And if it was something innocuous , Cain should have said so.
If he had been a lower level employee, in today’s ( and the 90s )
corporate environment
Cain would
probably have been fired after
the second accusation surfaced.
Most companies have a strict zero tolerance policy about
this because of the possibility of lawsuits.

Anonymous -- as in unnamed, unofficial and unverifable -- complaints from the 1990s about "inappropriate behavior" -- which, btw, could mean he just called some overly wound gal "honey" -- and the left thinks it's a story.

Stories that you write when you don't know that "bearing false witness" is one of the 10 big sins.

Oh, I want to scream!

We need to put “inappropriate speech” at work with subordinates clearly up against Larry Sinclair humming in the back of a limo, the Prez smoking CRACK, and the Prez having such a good time that he shows up unannounced at Sinclair’s hotel room the following night. Ok, he wasn’t prez then, he was serving as state something, senator? Oh, and he was married with a baby! Oh, and when this started to get out when he ran for president, his middleman who was trying to keep Sinclait quiet, another partner of barack’s, the openly gay choir director at wright’s “church,” was murdered hit man style....

Put all that up against inappropriate speech!!

If it does kill Herman, he needs to pull Obama inti the flames! We have no perfect candidate! Look at the allegations against Obama! Please, for the sake of the American people, mr. Cain, if you go down in flames over suggestive speech to employees, pull Obama into the fire on This Earth : ask publicly what happened to Donald Young!!!!

Yesssss. Bloch should make a video getting out in front of the truth here, and definitely ask Sinclair for permission to include a clip of his video in it. Not about the plumbing he performed on barack’s pipes but maybe about how Barack went to buy some cocaine for them before they got started on their fun gay night.

It’s actually not nothing, it’s classic sexual harassment if it is true.

I am willing to give Cain a pass on it. I had very few bosses who did not go there. Most let it slide after they saw I wasn’t playing. The only one I reported was the one whom I gave three chances to. “if this happens again, I will report you” was said to him 2x. After the 3rd proposition, I reported him. We need this guy in the white house. He’s a bold conservative. Newt did worse. Obama did worse.

Cain has to be certain that the women are actually the people who broke the agreements.

Correct. I remember attending,in the early 90’s, during a company convention..a required workshop on sexual harassment..it was just starting to be an issue in the corporate workplace...some outside consultant gave it..the usual examples about improper and suggestive comments, touching...and at the end..during the Q&A, some senior VP..who obviously been bending a few elbows, raised his hand and said..”but you didn’t tell me HOW to get sexually harassed.”..most everyone laughed..six months later..he “retired.”..

Talk about payback being a bitch...

I assume, from Cain's comments, that these were both unfounded allegations, and were settled becausee it was the easy path to take for the company and the insurance carrier...people forget that the insurance company can force the settlement, or the coverage is cancelled. Well, now, these two ladies ( the names will come out) are going to have their lives treated like gynecological exams on LIVE TV..everything they ever did will come out..

Payback ( delayed) can be a real bitch..

I’d like to see Cain there ahead of Perry, Romney and, of course, Obama, but he really hasn’t been through sufficient vetting yet.

(And yes, there is a double standard, the GOP has to be able to withstand a media onslaught that Obama will never face.)

I agree that the reported level of harassment, whether true or not, is pretty common. To me what looks way more problematic is if he as the head of the trade group made the payments but members of the board at the time were, as they are claiming, unaware of it. That is not garden variety and would, I would think, be a major issue.

True. I hope he can come out in front of this, and I cannot just agree that the double standard exists. We need to fight that double standard! If Cain goes down he needs to take Obama down with him, or t least the media!

I’d love to see the GOP use this to vbrinmg up Larry Sinclair and all the sordid Obama issues nonstop.

I’d be absolutely shocked to see it though.

I find it interesting that 2 black conservatives have had stories that the media went on about for weeks...Clarence Thomas and now Cain....the white democrats get such things buried real quick....they don’t like it when one of their people leave the plantation...Just like the old days, the word goes out to catch that runaway slave..Even black democrats get everything buried...they are the most corrupt party in existence..
