The funniest scene in the old hockey movie Slap Shot might be the one where the Hanson brothers start a fight with the other team before the game even starts.
Who knew that could be a parable for President Obamas reelection campaign?
During the scene in the Paul Newman classic, one of the infamous Hanson brothers punches an opponent while theyre skating during warm-ups. Moments later, both teams are covered in blood and standing at attention for the pre-game Star-Spangled Banner.
The Hansons couldnt wait for the game to start to throw a punch. And so it is with Obama and his teams in the White House and Chicago.
The new refrain from the president of we cant wait ostensibly refers to measures that would spur job creation. More accurately, it reflects the political calculus that if Obama wants to win next year, he cant wait for the GOP to crown a nominee. He needs to start bruising his opponent now.
Obama and his team have good reason to be impatient.
If next year is a referendum on the economy or president, Obama and his advisers have all at some point acknowledged the president will lose.
It has to be a choice election for Obama to win, and neither the White House nor Chicago can wait for Republicans to present their standard-bearer.
In the past few weeks, White House and campaign officials have all but declared Romney the nominee. While the media and Iowa caucusgoers are still waiting out the traditional method of picking a nominee, the president and his team have put Romney in their sights, blasting the former Massachusetts governor in conference calls and background briefings.
And Romney is the second target.
The first phase of Obamas we cant wait political strategy was his fall offensive against Congress.
Obamas teams think that phase is working.
In the last week, senior administration officials have mentioned with joy and frequency Congresss historic-low approval rating of 9 percent.
By going on the road and going on offense, using the thin shield of an ill-fated jobs act, Obama has helped drive down congressional approval.
And while it hasnt yielded any huge gains for Obamas own dismal approval rating, this isnt about making people like Obama.
Its about making people hate Congress. And soon it will be about making people hate Romney. Or at least fear him.
If Obama can drive down Romneys numbers the way he has helped drive down Congresss, the president and his family will likely be spending another four years in the White House.
The first step was key, though. Remember Obama in August?
He was broken. Defeated. The look on his face in the White House briefing room the night the debt-ceiling deal was reached was that of a man who was about to be a one-term president and was not all that upset by the prospect.
Whether sparked by desperation or genuine disdain for Congress, the calculation was made to hammer Congress to a pulp. By driving down lawmakers numbers, Obama found something to stand on from which he can fight a Republican opponent.
Obama was far too weak and bloodied to go into combat against Romney earlier this year. The Democratic base was depressed, furious with Obama and wishing it had a real Democrat to back.
The president had no message. He had completely conceded the terms of the debate on the economy and deficit reduction to the Republicans. In short, Obama looked like he was about to spend a year limping toward defeat.
Now, armed with the jobs act that is going nowhere fast and near-daily we cant wait executive actions, Obama is squarely on offense, even if those unilateral actions arent going to create a whole lot of jobs.
He has beaten and bloodied Congress, making fish in a barrel both his target and his pre-game warm-up fight.
Keep in mind, however, that none of the other numbers has changed. Unemployment is still at 9.1 percent, and Obama remains locked in a dogfight with a generic Republican challenger.
The Obama team knows that, and thats why they arent sitting around fighting a generic Republican or holding out hope that the economy miraculously turns around.
They need an enemy with a face, a name and a record of flip-flops. Iowa is still two months away, but campaign and White House officials are already talking a great deal about whether Romney can be trusted.
The summer days of compromise are gone, replaced by the autumn winds of political combat.
The winter will be cold, brutal and long as the presidents team takes its fight from Congress to Romney.
Obama cant wait.
And if they do so, that is Zero’s best hope for another 4 years of movin’ on up, because the Pubbies will lose their base.
The Elite in Washington are trying so hard to push that liberal flip flopped Romney. While they ignore all the crimes and misdemeanors by the current administration.
Hey elite since you don’t care about all the Crimes and misdemeanors by the current administration. I don’t care what Cain may have 20 years ago.
Rest assured if we are forced with another McCain type, then you will see a rise of the tea party. Accept the less of the two evils Is not acceptable.
bam better fight him now because by election time, his hope will be changed.
I just had to do it again! Another blowhard pipes up. He is only trying to do for Romney what Politicrap’s boomerang is doing for Cain.
He and Michelle will have to take time off from fighting America.
Yup. My last RINO vote was 2008. Never, ever, ever again.
But one question: since when would Myth qualify as the "lesser of two evils?"
In the back of a limo?
“Fight”? More like a metrosexual bromance.
The money and support is pouring in for Herman Cain, but we cannot slow down now. Please help him by donating at http://www.hermancain.com/
Also to help join the buzz about Herman go to facebook.com and like him. In just the last week he has jumped 13% or 42000 with an impressive 10,000 in the last 24 hours. Make no mistake Karl Rove is watching Hermans likes and so is Romney who gained just 1500 since last Tuesday. THIS is the way to stick it to the GOP establishment! Please tell your family and friends to like Herman as well.
mitt is evil... no lesser to it... his lifetime of political whoring proves it.
Romney and Obama are two sides of the same coin: both are lying, opportunistic socialists who signed government-mandated health care into law.
Every time I point that out to a Romney fallback voter, it’s met with nothing but silence. The GOP establishment has pushed party-line compliance to such a degree that many Republicans have never given serious thought to whether pulling the “R” lever is the right thing to do.
If you can be convinced to vote for a flat-out socialist because of the letter before his name, how are you any better than the liberal Republicans you claim to hate? What ever happened to “principle over party?”
If Slick Willard wins the nomination, you and I will have our work cut out for us trying to convince people that their resources would be better used in congressional and state elections.
Willard (snicker) Mitt Romney is the grandfather of ObamaCare.
Sarah Palin gets 2 votes in our state if Romney is the nomineee = yours and mine and our votes had better get recorded and published.
I will vote at the Court House to make certain about mine.
This article screams, “Look how ignorant the average American voter is!!!”
They dumbed us down and now they are making hay with it.
Pure drivel. The Lewinski boys at the irrelevant Hill are well known for their Nancy-boy treatment of obuma. The Hill is a Marxist warming pan for Leninist fruitcakes to move onto the wretched MSM. See Chuck Todd.
However Mitt won't make the GOP nomination.
IF were smart enough to nominate Newt, Obama will be less enthusiastic!
We can retire the national debt by charging admission to Newt/Barack debates!
LOL.. Good point
Heck, Obama will probably ask him to be his next Veep.
He sent his top advisors to the White House to insure obamacare stuck to romneycare outlines.
Obama will beat Romney as bad as the Eagles beat the Cowboys the other night.
I agree, I think it would be some limp-wristed, hissy-fit, slap-fight. I HONESTLY think my wife would be able to fight better than Obambi.
