Perry Camp Denies Leaking Cain Harassment Story, Fingers Romney Campaign
National Journal ^ | Updated: November 2, 2011 | 6:13 p.m.

A spokesman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s campaign is adamantly denying that members of the GOP presidential candidate's staff leaked a story has swamped Herman Cain's campaign this week. Instead, the Perry camp is pointing a finger at the campaign of another rival Republican, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, as a possible source of the report about the sexual-harassment charges levelled a decade ago against Cain by female subordinates at the National Restaurant Association.

I'm not sure WHAT Cain could do in this situation. Does he categorically deny everything, and then have a Larry Flynt type pay handsomely to unseal some lips? Cain goes down. Does Cain "come clean" and admit to "indiscretions"? Cain goes down. He's obviously chosen a middle path. "Something happened, but I had no idea about a settlement". Makes him LOOK guilty. Cain goes down.

It pains me greatly, because Cain is almost universally known as a man of character. In Clinton's case, EVERYONE knew he was sleazy, even his friends. Nobody ever came to his defense, saying he was an upright citizen. Even today his most ardent supporters think Clinton was a reprobate, but he was a great liberal, so it's just not "important".

"There are more links to Rove and Romney...so why are they accusing Perry?"

You didn't get the memo? Everybody hates Perry because he is the sole reason that all illegal immigrants are in this country.

Perrys spokesman merely “suggested” that it could be Romney.

Exactly, and he made it clear he was repeating what was being said on various internet sites. Cain stated it as fact, with no source mentioned.

My two cents are still that Rove and Romney are trying to kill two birds with one stone.

I thought we had a viable candidate in Cain. I liked what I heard from him and thought he was the real deal. A real stand-up guy.

With what I heard today about finger-pointing the Perry campaign, I’m not so sure. I am hopeful Cain has the goods on Perry in an iron clad way. Not that I want to see Perry behind this, but I don’t want to see Cain shoot from the hip and be wrong. All this is doing is making a circus of our primary and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Obama get a bump out of this as our candidates, look shallow and petty.

This was supposed to be a good year for conservatives, the media is going to have a field day with all the anonymous allegations and finger-pointing.

When are we going to learn the media is not our friend and unless and until Politico or other MSM outlet publishes facts rather than alegations, it doesn’t even deserve a response.

Cain also said he and Anderson? departed on good terms.
Now he is Accusing the guy and Perry with no proof.

For his part Anderson played good friend and said he knew nothing of the accusations against Cain when asked about it.

I am beginning to really dislike Mr Cain.

Hah! Clinton was very good at the latter. I’ve supported Cain since he announced. I have more issues with his 9-9-9 plan than I do with this contrived BS. But, and a big one at that, I still believe Cain is the very best choice that we can make.

I doubt the DNC is smiling. They probably had this story in their bag of tricks and it's gone now. That's why I believe in vetting all our candidates now. Not later.

That's a good point. They might be consoled by thinking Willard's going to be the last man standing.

Perry’s spokesman just pointed to stories that suggested Romney was behind it, and said he wouldn’t put it past them. Cain stated it as fact with no evidence.

How the **** did we get here when we had three years to find a real conservative leader?

Well, for starters, we had to work with the GOP.

Think about the cop on the street, content that citizens are carrying weapons. Then think about the chiefs, damning the thought. Same here.

Pfffft.
You never liked him to begin with, but who cares.

There is NO evidence of that he did anything wrong, yet you’re ready to believe he’s in the wrong.

Sell your feigned sentiments elsewhere.

I’d want to see the question they were asked, and their exact answer. The statement as worded in this story isn’t an accusation. It’s a suggestion. Given that we have had multiple threads today attacking Romney and giving plausible leak stories implicating either him or his supporters, it is a rational statement to say that Romney’s camp may have been behind it (which is the words used in the story).

Never use headlines as a description of what is being told — they are written by people whose job is to draw readers, not necessarily match the story.

There is a difference between that and a flat out personal accusation by Cain himself with NO PROOF.

Sounds silly on the surface, but I kid you not a woman in our area who calls in regularly to the local talk shows, in fact, said just yesterday that in her opinion, it was Newt behind this hit on Cain. I usually give her the benefit of the doubt, but on this one, I couldn’t diagree more. If it were Newt’s campaign, I’d be shocked, to say the least.

If he has some, let's see it! Put up or shut up!

Yeah I hear ya. I don't have major problems with either. I just want Cain to handle this well. I don't like 9-9-9 but since it's going nowhere anyway it is really just a vehicle for a discussion on lower taxes. So let's hope he calmly deals with this mini-crisis the media has created.
