Hiring slowed in October as employers faced more uncertainty over future economic growth.

The Labor Department says the economy added 80,000 jobs last month, the fewest in four months and below September's revised total of 158,000. The unemployment rate dipped to 9 percent.

Businesses added 104,000 jobs, below September's total. Government shed 24,000 jobs.

The report included some positive signs. The government revised August and September's figures upward by 102,000. Average hourly earnings rose. And the unemployment rate fell for the first time since July, because a separate survey of households showed more people found work.

The report suggests that President Obama will likely face the voters with the highest unemployment rate of any postwar president

Birth/death fudge factor was +103K = 23K jobs gone.

This is obviously bullish for the economy.

Listen to the music played in the large stores and malls. Does it take a Genius to figure out why they are hiring?

What is truly hilarious, and what confirms the L should be permanently scrapped from the BLS is that the initial August NFP number of 0 has now been revised twice to 104,000 or whatever suites the US policy at the time.

What IS saving us is the Republicans blocking him from doing what he really wants. If he is reelected he can thank the Republicans.

All the talking heads this am were saying that the number would be +100,000, and the unemployment rate would stay at 9.1%. We see it is 80K,and the rate drops, they revised the previous months numbers. Sounds like creative accounting to me.

The Republicans and conservative media should not give any credence to the official unemployment rate. It is entirely bogus and grossly under reports the actual unemployment rate. The “official” rate will miraculously start to dip around July of 2012 and get to 7.9% just before election day, when it will still be over 15% in real terms.

Thanksgiving is less weeks an exactly 3 weeks to the busiest shopping day in the US.

I would expect a bump until the 1st of the year and then up goes unemployment.

The 9% is probably fudged.

But what is the net jobs gain or loss?

I still don’t understand fuzzy math... and the apparent non-relationship to the 1st time unemployment claims weekly report and the monthly job report.

1st time unemployment claims are averaging approx. 1.6 million a month. ( 400k a week).

yet today the unemployment rate went down.

you can explain household surveys and the ADP report til the cows come home and it still doesn’t reconcile the weekly 1st time claim numbers.
