Penn State Said to Be Planning Paterno Exit Amid Scandal
New York Times ^ | 8 November 2011 | Mark Viera & Pete Thamel

Posted on 11/08/2011 11:40:43 AM PST by bjorn14

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Joe Paterno’s tenure as coach of the Penn State football team will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks, in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal that has implicated university officials, according to two people briefed on conversations among the university’s top officials.

The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit, but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious national brand will not survive to coach another season. Discussions about how to manage his departure have begun, according to the two people.

Paterno was to have held a news conference Tuesday but the university canceled it less than an hour before it was scheduled to start.

At age 84 and with 46 seasons as the Penn State head coach behind him, Paterno’s extraordinary run of success — one that produced tens of millions of dollars for the school and two national championships, and that established him as one of the nation’s most revered leaders, will end with a stunning and humiliating final chapter.

Read the Grand Jury report. It appears he had a long conversation about it with the head of the University Police

That was tried by Paterno-bots and shot down days ago. He met with the VP of Finance and Business.

You've already been given a link to the Grand Jury report. Here's the Grand Jury presentment. It contains much of the same information, but each of the documents contains information that the other doesn't. The report contains information heard from witnesses that isn't in the presentment; the presentment contains 'facts' the AD said it was going to show to the Grand Jury. Facts may have been presented to the Grand Jury that it didn't feel necessary to place in its report.

What's clear is that everybody associated with Penn State football found out in 1998 (or earlier) that Sandusky was showering with young boys in the football locker room showers. He wasn't prosecuted because apparently there wasn't evidence of molestation. The prosecutor, Gricar, disappeared. As in . . . disappeared.

But after that, Sandusky 'took an early retirement.'

Instead of being booted to the curb, Penn State - which although it sickens me, means, Joe Paterno - gave Sandusky emeritus status in the Athletic Department. An office in the athletic building. A phone. A parking space. An internet account. Discounts at the school store and on tuition for his kid. Keys to everything. And Sandusky kept hanging around . . . and bringing young boys with him from The Second Mile program. Sandusky was bringing them to pre-game banquets, even. And football practices. And showing them around the football locker room.

Ramcat? Think of the stereotype of the older pedophile. A creepy old man who lures kids with candy. The candy that Sandusky used was the Penn State football program.

And JoePa and everyone around the Penn State football program knew that Sandusky was using it as candy. Heck, they gave it to Sandusky to use when they gave him the emeritus status, the office, the keys, and the rights to sit at those pre-game banquets with the kids.

I'm sickened.

The grand jury report seems to have left unanswered the issue of what exactly McQueary told Paterno about the 2002 incident. I wonder why? I think that a possible answer is that Joe Paterno is cooperating with the prosecution and that the designated fallguys are the AD and the VP of Finance.

It was reported early on that Joe had agreed to testify against Curley and Schultz.

So you are saying that if Joe Paterno, the GOD of Penn State football, had gone to the University and demanded they be rid of Sandusky, that they would not have done so?

I think the problem here is that you think Paterno actually has divine powers. If Paterno demanded of Curley and Spainer that Sandusky be banned after he got his retirement package, they would have put their arms around his shoulders and explained why they couldn't do that.

That has been bothering me, and you are the first I’ve seen articulate it.

*sigh*

In my profession, I have to read documents like the Grand Jury presentment and the Grand Jury findings at least twice. Always at least twice.

Once, to see what is in them. A second time, to see what isn't in them.

it's like working on a large jig-saw puzzle. Initially, you look at the pieces and put them together based on what's there and what the look like. Next, you look at the holes in the completed puzzle and fit pieces based on what's not there.

In this case, it's when I read the documents looking for what was not there that I became ill. Because I respected Joe Paterno.

I'll state it one more time.

The documents meticulously follow the link of conversations among four men: McQueary, Paterno, Curley, and Schultz. What one claims to have said to the second, and what the second claims to have been told from the first. In the case of one meeting among McQueary, Curley, and Schultz, they detail what McQueary says he said, what Curley said he was told, and what Schultz says he was told.

Out of all of the meetings, from the time McQueary called his father through his multiple meetings with Paterno, Curley, and Schultz, and meetings between Curley and Schultz, and those involving the Penn State President . . . there is one conversation that everybody avoids as if it radioactive.

If this is a jigsaw puzzle, the puzzle is complete except for one piece.

Nobody will address what McQueary told the investigators that he told Paterno.

There's this long chain that starts with McQueary's call to his father . . . and only one link is missing in both the presentment and findings. What did McQueary tell the investigators that he told Paterno? McQueary may not have been asked that specific question before the grand jury, on purpose. The presentment suggests it wasn't part of the DA's evidence. The findings suggest the grand jury wasn't told.

So you're saying that Paterno saw Sandusky take these kids to the showers? Why do you think that?

Because it was common knowledge that Sandusky frequently brought little boys into Joe's locker room. At some time, Joe must have seen Sandusky.

Is any of this beginning to give you a sick feeling about Paterno?

I thank you for your well thought out post.

I've got a sick feeling about the whole thing. I've read almost every article that's been written about this incident but I've yet to read the entire GJ report. I'll force myself to do it after the kid goes to bed.

I'm not sure Sandusky's retirement was forced on him as a result of the 1998 report as you insinuate?

It is my understanding that he (the monster) negotiated the terms of his retirement (access to campus, office, etc.) with the administration, not with Paterno.

I'm still willing to hear what Joe has to say (they're trying to quiet him) before I throw him away.

Because....if McQueary did indeed tell Joe exactly what he saw...then Joe downplayed it to his superiors.

Joe knew about the 1998 incident that happened in Joe's locker room. He remained silent.

The staff in the locker room remained silent because they were afraid of losing their jobs if they said anything. Joe was in on the cover-up of the 2002 molestation. Throw him away. He has now made a deal with the prosecutors to testify against all his old buddies if (mercy on his soul) he can survive that long.

I’m guessing that Paterno shows up for work at a certain time every day and that he does the same routine week in and week out. I believe it is possible that Joe Paterno never ran into Sandusky when Sandusky was in the gym or showers or wherever. It may not be the case. I really don’t know Paterno’s habits. I don’t know much about him at all other than Bama won some great games against his teams. And that he’s pretty much deaf and blind.

Why would the VP of Finance be involved in discussions concerning a report of a sex with a minor?

Maybe because the University might be sued? Schultz was the Senior Vice President of Business and Finance.

One of the department that reported to him was the University Police. Neither Schultz nor Curley (nor Paterno nor McQueary) ever reported the 2002 incident to the University Police or any law enforcement or child protective agency. Neither Schultz nor Curley (nor Paterno nor McQueary) ever tried to find out the name of the child anally raped in the Penn State football showers.

The apologists who say that Schultz was the head of the Penn State police are simply wrong. The head of the Penn State University Police reported to Schultz. The head of the FBI may report to Barack Obama, but that doesn't make Barack Obama the head of the FBI.

Schultz was there in a CYA mode. And he did so effectively . . . for nine years.

Agreed. Joe is cooperating. Curley, Schultz and Spanier are not. Joe gets the pass at this time because he is:

1. Eighty-seven years old and holds the record for most victories in NCAA football.

2. He has a nice wife and family.

3. He has agreed to testify.

4. He is not officially an officer of the school.

5. He has agreed to testify.

If he testifies, he will also be cross-examined. I don't see how PSU can go through all this. I see Paterno retiring, Curley and Schultz making a plea deal and Spanier stepping down. Maybe he will get Curley and Schultz to turn against Spanier but first. However, given the resolution and determination expressed by the State police head today, he may go after blood. We already have seen them opening up investigations on others that are NOT part of the PSU staff.

True. JoePa may not physically have been there.

But I'm a premiere major college football coach. My good friend, defensive coordinator, and heir apparent took an early retirement in 1999 after being investigated for showering with young boys in the football locker room showers.

You think I'm not going to hear about it when he's seen around the football locker room with young boys?

I have a network that tells me when one of my players broke curfew twenty miles off campus. And I'm not going to be told when a former coach, now emeritus, who had a problem showering with little boys, is seen with a little boy around the football showers? I'm not going to know that this guy is using my facilities to hold sleepover athletic camps for boys?

One of his coaches comes to him and tells him he caught Sandusky in the shower with underage boys having sex, and all he does is tell his boss...

And that pretty much sums it up. Paterno does not have a boss, he is the boss. As one columnist wrote, "Did you even know Penn State had a president before today?"

There was no chain of command to kick it up. If Paterno played that game it does portray him as a little lacking in character.
