STATE COLLEGE, Pa. Joe Paternos tenure as coach of the Penn State football team will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks, in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal that has implicated university officials, according to two people briefed on conversations among the universitys top officials.
The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paternos exit, but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college footballs top level and who made Penn State a prestigious national brand will not survive to coach another season. Discussions about how to manage his departure have begun, according to the two people.
Paterno was to have held a news conference Tuesday but the university canceled it less than an hour before it was scheduled to start.
At age 84 and with 46 seasons as the Penn State head coach behind him, Paternos extraordinary run of success one that produced tens of millions of dollars for the school and two national championships, and that established him as one of the nations most revered leaders, will end with a stunning and humiliating final chapter.

Why would Paterno need to leave if he had nothing to do with the scandal?
Because he knew his assistant coach was blowing kids in the shower and did nothing to stop it?
Good, that dirtbag never reported this monster to the Police. Hopefully he also never gets honored for his coaching wins, since he’s rendered them meaningless by turning a blind eye to that monster.
Whither Joe Paterno? Will his name be scrubbed from the library on campus?
Because he knew his assistant coach was blowing kids in the shower and did nothing to stop it?

That is so disheartening. Joe Paterno has been my favority sports figure for years because he is/was a man of integrity. But, he should have gone the the authorities with this when he first heard it. I’m very disappointed in him.
As a college football fan, I've had a tremendous respect for JoePa. It is inexplicable.
You sound like a Pitt fan?
Look the guy (Sandusky)is married and has at least one child. Do you think his family knew he was a monster.?
If you took any time to read the accounts of the story the grad assistant didn't tell Paterno the details of what he witnessed.
Paterno passed what information he had along to his superiors.
If you witnessed something of this nature at work (assuming you don't own the company), would you tell your boss or call the cops?
Paterno shares blame here, but the PSU administration was notified by Paterno and they tried to cover this up. If Paterno is the only one to pay then no justice has been done. Having said that, someone like Joe could have taken on the PSU admin (had he wanted) and won given his national standing.
I just hope everyone involved in this coverup eventually pays the price.
Paterno apparently reported it to his AD, which technically kept him on the right side of the law.
But like all of you, I would have then removed this dirtbag from campus and told him not to let me catch his arse around here again. Instead they chose to keep him around the football program.
I wanna know what did Graham Spanier know, and when did he know it?
Did he witness the crime first hand or hear of it second hand?
The NCAA needs to slap heavy sanctions on Penn State up to and including the Death Penalty.
So, what's stopping you, Sandusky?
Just don't use a gun, please. Gas yourself in your closed garage while sitting inside your running SUV, or go up into the forest and drink a gallon jug of Prestone® anti-freeze.
Paterno should be booger-hooked out of Penn State. I thought coaches were supposed to instill character in their players. Guess that old fart never really understood what the meant in all of his 46 years as coach.
Will they return the millions he and Sue donated to the University?
Makes me wonder if his staying on might’ve been related to keeping the lid on things? Idle conjecture on my part, since I haven’t a shred of evidence to back that up or perhaps, to even wonder aloud.
In addition to the AD, I would have reported the guy to the police.
“Why would Paterno need to leave if he had nothing to do with the scandal?”
According to the indictment, the second time this guy was caught in the shower (having anal sex with a young boy), the witness reported it directly to Paterno.
Paterno reported it to the AD...not the police...didn’t fire the guy, and apparently didn’t even admonish him for it.
Joe is king of all things football at Penn State. He could have fird the guy on the spot - but instead he pushes it on up the COC?
Sadly, it looks like Joe ignored the problem - and this guy was left to find even more victims.
As it should have been...Hayes was one of the greatest coaches of all time, and I say that as somebody who grew up as a diehard Michigan fan.
I'm sure you would have reported it if you witnessed it first hand.
But, Paterno didn't.
And, the grad assistant wasn't specific as to what took place.
Would you really involve the police on hearsay?
Paterno reported what he knew in a timely manor to his superiors.
But Hayes was caught on TV.
It looks to me like this investigation was put on hold until he got the win record. His retirement will be his punishment. I'm not saying that's right, but I think that's the way it is.
My real question is, why is the press so up in arms. Arent we supposed to embrace homosexuality, and isnt intergenerational sex supposed to be the next taboo that is to be abolished???
No he could not as Sandusky had resigned three years earlier.
What if it had been YOUR son raped?
Or raped a few year later because Paterno didn’t call the cops or follow up?
Penn State is facing hundreds of millions in liability. This is the biggest scandal in the history of college football by far.
These are children being raped.
If you put football over the safety of kids you’re a sad f@ck.
“I’m sure you would have reported it if you witnessed it first hand.
But, Paterno didn’t.
And, the grad assistant wasn’t specific as to what took place.”
####
The grad assistant that was an eyewitness to the rape?
Why exactly wasn’t he specific regarding aomething that abominably heinous?
Why then too, didn’t Paterno press him on the details and instead accept a nebulous, non-specific account?
I'm calling BS on this.
Everything I've read indicates that all the reported behavior took place AFTER Sandusky retired in 1999.
How could Paterno fire the guy when he didn't work for him at the time the incident took place???
Take your BS to a Buckeye site.
Why don't you apply for a job at the Politico?
If true, then Paterno should lose his retirement completely!
“....the man who has more victories than any other coach at college footballs top level....”
.
He would not have had that title if Penn State had competed more against SEC teams.
Nobody involved with the FOOTBALL department turned a blind eye.
The information was presented to the administration and they failed the victims and should be held accountable.
Why don’t you get you head out of your disgustingly biased asz and answer an honest question?
I’m trying to understand the DETAILS of this case and was looking for facts.
It is quite clear I need to look elsewhere.
Is your reading comprehension that poor. Go back and reread my post. I said justice hadn’t been served as everyone responsible had not paid.
Get a grip.
Come on man!
Joe is 84 and a gazillionaire.
Retirement?
Come on man!
And that would be the people involved as they are the only ones who can answer your questions.
Sure, guy was raping children in the showers at Penn State - was there last week working out in the weight room - takes his ‘troubled youth’ children to Penn State games.
But two credible reports that the guy was in the shower with young boys - and they seemed to have no problems having him around for the next ten years.
Penn State football has no class, and is led by a moral reprobate with pedophile friends.
Just one of the reasons that I hope my granddaughter gets a sports scholarship. She’s got brains, a great personality and works hard...5th in her class of 500.
Well, from what I understand, Paterno reported the jerk to the AD and the AD did nothing. But Paterno had to see this guy continuing to work and having heard/seen nothing more from the AD, he should have been more aggressive - going over and above the AD - to get this jerk hauled in.
Whoops...Hope my granddaughter DOES NOT get a sports scholarship.
I thought I read yesterday that the AD and one other person were being tagged for lying to a Grand Jury, in an attempt to cover up the deal, and that’s a federal offense.
He should NOT receive any retirement benefits, period. His aquired wealth is something his victims could go after.
I haven't been following this. What was a young boy doing in a college shower?
Or was it a 17-year-old Freshman?

It's pretty clear that by 1998 everyone, including Paterno, knew that Sandusky was a pedophile, and it lead to Sandusky’s “retirement” in 1999.
I was wondering about your initial comment ;0)
Well, obviously. That is the easy and expected cop-out answer.
When sweep-it-under-the rug Paterno is sued, if not prosecuted, I expect those are the exact primary questions that will indeed be asked.
Fence it off and call it State Pen.
Sandusky was a child rapist, and everyone connected with the PSU football program knew it and covered it up.
In the words of Johnny Cash
..you can roll on for along time, but soon or later God will cut you down...
Paterno stayed in coaching way too long, and by doing so he has exposed himself as someone who was not looking out for the best intrests of his university and people in general.
