AP: Joe Paterno to retire at season's end
CBS Sports ^ | November 9, 2011

UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.

As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."

"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

Amen! Amazed at how many apologists there are for Paterno.

So, if a murder was reported to him, it was enough just to tell the next guy higher up?

You are the most morally bankrupt person I've ever had the displeasure to communicate with on Free Republic.

And you are one of the most stupid or, lemme guess, you're a product of the government schools and have reading comprehension challenges?

I'll wait for more facts and information rather that yelp in smug indignation

Your smug indignation is noted.

Of course not. You would have to help get rid of the body.

Any names mentioned? Or is ESPN just spouting?

Frankly ABC/ESPN is going to try to spin this story the second it suits their agenda. And you watch: they will attempt to rehabilitate Paterno’s reputation at some point.

Read the report and see that Paterno was told that something of a sexual nature was happening between the child and his former defensive coordinator.

Stop defending the indefensible.

Joe was required to report that violation of law to the state authorities.

Ahhh. So that's why Paterno was indicted. LOL, you're a moron.

Did you read the grand jury indictment? If you did (and knowing the control that Paterno has had in Happy Valley for so long), how could you think that he did not know what this guy was doing at least in '98? But he knew for sure in '02 and continued to allow this serial child rapist access to PSU? In '07, Sandusky showed up at a (closed) practice with young boy...whaaa???

And you surely understand that the DA would not go after this PSU crew if they did not have the goods. Really.

Taking the difficult path of morality always seems stupid to the immoral and the amoral.

Such is life.

Read the report and what he admits knowing instead of putting your head in the sand and claiming ignorance!

Gee, a child is in the shower with a grown man in the middle of the night-nothing to get concerned about!

which I knew had been investigated by the CPS gestapo for child molestation in 1998

According to the investigative reporter I listened to yesterday, Paterno knew nothing about the 1998 incident. His name is mentioned nowhere.

Does that clear it up for you?

If a murder is reported to you and you don't report it to the police, you are considered an accessory

Really? You don't think that the campus police or the State College police would not have made sure Joe knew in '98? Their thinking would have been: "If I withold this from Joe, it could be the end of me."

And Sandusky "retired" the next year, and you really think that Joe had NO IDEA that Sandusky was a pedophile?

Just no way. Sorry. Loyalty is a good thing, but allowing serial child rape should trump that feeling.

I get it though...you're not going to be convinced until you see a picture of Joe in boots and a raincoat watching Sandusky abusing a 10 y/o boy in a shower.

As I have posted previously (numerous times!), if Paterno knew what kind of monster Sandusky was and looked the other way, then he should share a cell with Sandusky until dead. The thing is, Paterno is the biggest target - - nobody ever heard of any of these other clowns - - and so the tendency is to lay the entire blame at his feet. But Paterno witnessed nothing with his own eyes and so depended on others to investigate and act accordingly.

All I'm trying to do is keep a little perspective until more is known. the grand jury report and prosecutors charges are only the beginning. There will be a whole lot more stories cascading out of this scandal, and then let the chips fall. If it turns out Paterno acted selfishly or maliciously, I will happily turn the key on his cell door and laugh in his face.

FRegards,
LH

The BOTTOM LINE is that this situation has been handled so poorly, it makes every other college infraction in the history of the game looks like Russel Sheppard’s case.

This is EVEN WORSE than a Baylor player murdering another player, or the Tulane Point-shaving case.

Istead of doing the MORALLY RIGHT thing, Penn State and local authorities engaged in a huge CYA cover=up.
