AP: Joe Paterno to retire at season's end
CBS Sports ^ | November 9, 2011

UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.

As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."

"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paterno’s exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college football’s top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

They only had to keep this hush hush long enough for him to set the win record ,right?

hasn’t that already happened?

now they’ll get the moniker of Pedo State.

As someone said on another thread, “What would Bear Bryant have done?” He probably would have gone down there and strangled the sonofabitch himself.

“The team and the school has fallen.”

Our entire culture has fallen. This is simply one more bit of evidence to support that. Any society without firm moral principles is doomed. Period.

I do not know what Coach Paterno knew about any of this. I will not tarnish him without knowing so.

He should leave immediately if he wants to instill courage and ethics in his players. He should walk the walk.

NCAA Bylaw 2.4 The Principles of Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, student-athletes, coaches, and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifest not only in athletics participation but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program.

For anyone claiming this has nothing to do with the football program.

It wasn’t tarnished after 46 years.
It became tarnished after the first incidents were covered up.
That we are only finding out now shows the depth of the corruption.

Maybe the trustees should have put in a university president with different values and vision than a guy who wrote his doctoral dissertation on wife swapping.

If I had a kid at Penn State (I have two in college now) and saw one at that ridiculous Rally for Pedophilic Rape at JoePa's house, I would get in my car and be there right now and sit down with them and explain right from wrong and what a heinous crime child rape is.

And that smiling sick b@stard comes out of his house like a superstar. Yecchhhh...

You wonder who is going to want to take the job so soon after this?

There would be a line longer than you can imagine. Especially since you would be looking at a total house clearing.

According to the graduate student and the Grand Jury he told Paterno and the other two guys (both charged) that he walked into the room to the sound of wet flesh slapping against wet flesh and saw anal sex going on, they both saw him, and he left the room. No doubt only after the fact did he think to himself - that was like a ten year old kid on the receiving end!

Where did you get that Paterno was only told about “horseplay”?

It was the two PennStatePedo guys who are charged for covering up the crime that reported it as “horseplay”.

It might very well have, but it just hasn't become public. If it does, they won't be the Cornhuskers very long.

I’m a little fuzzy on Joe Pa’s role in this.

Well then, I'll be glad to enlighten you: Paterno was approached by McQueary who had witnessed the rape of a child by Jerry Sandusky at Pedo State facilities in 2002 and did nothing more than punt a report up the chain of command. No followup with school administrators, no demand that children be protected from this monster who was left to hunt for 9 more years while using Pedo State satellite facilities for his "troubled youth" program.

IOW, by his doing nothing he aided and abetted a serial child rapist who was picking his targets from a group that no one would believe against the standard bearers of the Penn State "brand".

Does this clear it up for you?

He seemed confused and befuddled when they talked to him about this last night. That’s the only slack I am willing to cut him over this. Perhaps he’s been slipping for years and the university has been covering for him.

Exponentially surreal. Someone needs to step in and just forfeit the rest of the season and prepare everyone who has an interest in PSU for what’s about to happen. To every thing there is a season, and for them this ain’t the time to play.

Are you kidding me? A grown man and a young boy naked in the shower horsing around at 9:30 in the evening with nobody around? That is your excuse for Paterno’s inaction. That he did not know the severity of the situation.

I am sure if it was your son and this was conveyed to you, you would think nothing of it. Joe enabled this behavior to protect his cherished football program.

It was not a rumor. Grad assistant and former PSU QB McQueary WITNESSED a 10 year old boy being ass raped by Sandusky.

He went to Paterno who claims the incident wasn’t described as ass rape to him but “fondling” or “inappropriate behavior”.

Read the grand jury report if you want to remove the fuzziness about joepa’s role.

I have to ask, if more than one person witnessed this crime taking place why did no one kick the living crap out of this pervert? I sure as hell would have.
