Penn State child sex-abuse scandal: When we had the facts, we ran the story
PennLive ^ | 10-10-11 | David Newhouse

On Friday, The Patriot-News was the first news organization to report that former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky had been charged with child sex abuse. Since then, the national media have descended on Happy Valley and our own coverage has drawn 6 million page views on PennLive.com.

While many readers have expressed their appreciation for our coverage, some have asked: Forget Joe Paterno or Graham Spanier. Why didn’t The Patriot-News investigate these allegations sooner?

That’s an important question. Here is the answer:

A very strange article, and title, from PennLive, but here is the REAL BREAKING NEWS in it:

"In 1998, a boy who was 12 at the time told police that Sandusky had showered with him in the Penn State football locker room during a tour. The boy claimed Sandusky assaulted him during the shower.

During our own investigation, years later, the mother told us that she had been specifically instructed by state police not to speak with reporters.

No charges were filed against Sandusky in 1998. With the mother cowed into silence, the incident remained buried.

No further victims or witnesses spoke up until the 2002 incident that involved Mike McQueary, Paterno and other top university officials."

THE STATE POLICE TOLD THE MOTHER TO STAY SILENT....

This story just keeps getting worse, and larger.

Fire the entire coaching staff and shutdown the football program immediately.

Focus on Health care and what Milton Hershey did for the University. That is inspiring news for sure.

I hope the State Police “instruction” to the mother is a caution as to an “ongoing investigation” rather than something more sinister.

BTW folks PSU has a campus in Harrisburg. The newspaper was quite correct in making absolutely certain they had the facts in hand before publishing the original story.

“is” should be “was”, but upon re-reading the article it really does appear to me that it the State Police swept it under the rug.

Can't say that it was the State Police who swept it under the rug. Final say on the disposition of the case fell to DA Grigar who elected not to file charges.

Of course, he's no longer available for questioning on this portion of the whole matter, as he disappeared some years later, and was recently declared "dead".

A lot here that really needs some thorough explanations, which extreme doubt obtains will be forthcoming...

Local-State Police, Local-State Politicians and Child Protective Services all covered it up.

The rush to judgement involving Joe Paterno hides so much more than needs to be dealt with in this story.

The 1998 incident stands out big time. Sandusky was actually on the coaching staff at that time and would leave a year later.

The university police and other authorities including the local District Attorney’s office were involved.

We need answers about who knew what and why it was decided not to prosecute back then?

“..many at Penn State knew of Sandusky’s proclivities; at a local ice cream parlor there was (until yesterday), an ice cream treat named after Sandusky; two scoops of ice cream topped by a cone. “

During our own investigation, years later, the mother told us that she had been specifically instructed by state police not to speak with reporters.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that PA State Police were not involved in the 1998 case.

However, Penn State Police (campus police) were deeply involved and created their own report that the allegations were unfounded.

I want these tidbits to be accurate because they are so important to unraveling this case!

Between the Luzern County “Kids for Cash” scandal and the goings on in Happy Valley, seems like children in PA do not have a happy lot.

In the absense of any other info I believe that’s a fair assessment.

I have not seen anything to indicate why it took from 2002, time of the witnessed anal rape incident, to 2010 to get to a grand jury. What did I miss? Anybody have a clue?

I wonder if the state police gave her advice about talking with an attorney? They should have advised her to seek the advice of an attorney.

When it came to the Sandusky allegations 13 years ago, friends and former co-workers said Gricar would never have backed down if he had a strong case.

The lawyer’s nephew Tony Gricar told The Patriot-News: ‘People ask why Ray did not prosecute, and I have no problem saying, because he clearly felt he didn’t have a case for a ‘’successful’’ prosecution.

‘One thing I can say is that Ray was beholden to no one, was not a politician.’

The DA had a ‘bitter taste in his mouth’ for the Penn State program and Coach Sandusky, added his nephew.

Montour County District Attorney Robert Buehner Jr, a friend of the missing man, told the New York Times that if Gricar had committed suicide, he would have wanted his body found.

No suspects have ever emerged after investigations into Gricar’s death.

A report written in 1998 on the charges levelled against Sandusky decided the claims were ‘unfounded’ - even after the DA had the mother of an alleged victim confront the football coordinator while police listened in.

Mr Beuhener told The Patriot News: ‘You don’t want to go after someone high profile unless you have a compelling case.’

Sorry to be obtuse, but what is two scoops of ice cream with a cone on top supposed to signify in your mind? I have seen that configuration decorated to be a clown.

And, yes, I get the male genitilia alliteration. But where does pedophilia come in?
