Cain: God convinced me to run for president
CBS News ^ | November 12, 2011 | Lindsey Boerma

ATLANTA, Ga. - Herman Cain, whose campaign could use some redemption in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal, told a crowd of young Republicans on Saturday that God convinced him to run for president and that he "prayed and prayed and prayed" about it.

The Republican contender made no mention of the allegations from former subordinates at the National Restaurant Association. But his comments here were accented with more than the usual references to his faith and his calling to politics.

"I prayed and prayed and prayed. I'm a man of faith, I had to do a lot of praying for this one, more praying than I'd ever done before in my life," Cain told a crowd of more than 100 at the Young Republican National Federation, an event hosted by the Georgia Young Republicans at the Westin Peachtree Plaza. "And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses: 'You've got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?'"

Once he made the decision to run, the former chief executive of Godfather's Pizza said, "I did not look back. And one of the misperceptions that some people have (is) that I'm not in this to win it. I'm in this to win it, or I wouldn't be in it! I'm not going anywhere!"

Cain has repeatedly said in recent days he will stay in the race in spite of the swirl of accusations that have tarnished his campaign and halted his upward momentum in national polls. Four women who worked at the NRA claim that Cain sexually harassed them, and one of them, Sharon Bialek of Chicago, said he roughly grabbed her in a parked car in 1997 and propositioned her for sex.

With a Republican debate focused on foreign policy on tap for Saturday evening, Cain talked about the need to replace a "foggy foreign policy" with a reincarnation of the Reagan doctrine of "peace through strength and clarity." He also said he would "stop giving money to our enemies."

The debate among the eight major Republican candidates is at 8 p.m. and is hosted by National Journal and CBS News.

I have become dubious of claims that people make that G-d told them to do something.

She now claims to be a guy. Perhaps so.The post history may show that to be true...or not. Can never tell since S/He lies so easily. But for her/him to fling accusations of misogyny at anyone is farcical considering her unfounded attacks on any candidate not currently topping her/his chart of the moment.

Well, at least I’m in good company...but S/He’s still a liar. And S/He sure acts like a liberal besides.

I don't blame people in our society for being religious, but actually hearing voices in your head is not a good thing.

The problem is not *hearing* the voices in your head, but knowing which ones to listen to.

cf popular secular phrases such as "a little bird told me" or "I got to start listening to those nagging doubts" or "I knew it in my heart" to the humorous T-shirts "the voices in my head don't like you" and the Christian "I had a leading" or "the still small voice of God".

Or even The Flintstones or Animal House where an angel and a devil appear on opposite shoulders, whispering in either ear.

Cheers!

I believe in prayer but I don’t believe in Herman Cain.>

There, there, Anita.

I find it extremely interesting that you're so familiar with a sex magazine targeting men. Can you quote the entire rag, or do you just have a general knowledge of it from continually reading the thing?

A lot of guys just like to read the pictures.

After what’s happened to them, I’d be very surprised if any more choose to take the abuse they will get it they come out.

We all know how faithfully and tirelessly you worked to stand by Sarah Palin in her struggles against being slandered and abused.

Cheers!

Hey, altura, you are a really smart young lady... love your opinions.

By the way, I was hoping (eons ago) for a Palin/Perry or a Perry/Palin ticket for the best looking twosome ever.

Wonder if Palin would consider coming on board with Perry?

She might for a candidate she respects and I know she likes Perry.

I was like Moses: 'You've got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?'"

This is good news.

I hope he picks Sarah "with a servant's heart" Palin as his VP.

Four or eight years of Cain (depending on health) and Sarah comes in well-seasoned.

Cheers!

Not really. I just think he may have an eye for the ladies or he may act too familiarly with women who work for him.

So, do you think your assumptions (concerning accusations without proof) about Cain are pleasing to God or do you think you should think the best of someone until you have the absolute truth?

It is so comforting to know that our next president will have had a full-field national security investigation conducted on his background and been cleared to work on national security matters involving this Country. We know O’Bummer would never get to first base in a full-field investigation. I have had several conducted on me and I know of what I speak.

Shhhh! He's saving that to use on Obaama during one of the debates. :-)

Cheers!

God seems to be irrelevant. Rick Perry is all that matters.

Let's see if he cries out, "Hear, now, you rebels. Shall we call forth water for you out of this rock?"

Meribah and all that.

(And will the people grumble in their hearts to return to Egypt? All but Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun...note that faith leads to action, fear leads to hunkering down.

cf the GOP leadership now in DC.

Cheers!
