Cain’s campaign on Libya gaffe: He had four hours of sleep last night and was taken out of context

Good enough?

“The video is being taken out of context,” said spokesman JD Gordon. “He was taking questions for about 30 to 40 minutes on four hours of sleep. He didn’t say anything wrong or in accurate; it just took him a while to recall the specifics of Libya.”

Gordon added, “It just took him a while to gain his bearings.”

The clip was posted unedited by the Journal-Sentinel so I don’t know what context he thinks was missing. Is there some context that would explain why he needed the editorial board to remind him whether Obama is pro- or anti-Qaddafi? Because I’m thinking pretty much every one of our readers could nail that detail even on three hours’ sleep.

According to Andrew Rafferty of NBC News, “When I asked Cain if today’s Libya gaffe builds on idea he doesn’t have in depth knowledge of foreign policy, he simply said, ’999”. Not a joke.

I guess we’ll be okay as long as President Cain never gets a phone call at 3 a.m. The irony of today’s supergaffe is that I think it’ll do him much less harm among primary voters generally than the harassment charges have, even though his hair-raising vagueness on key foreign-policy details is much more certain than whether he did anything to his accusers. Only political junkies will see the Libya clip; thanks to Gloria Allred, everyone’s seen the Bialek presser. ABC’s out with a new poll tonight, in fact, showing Cain’s favorable rating now stands at 29/44, a steep drop from last month’s rating of 31/27. That’s a poll of adults, not of voters, but don’t forget that Rasmussen also found his favorables underwater at 37/51 in a poll of likely voters last week. I don’t know how he turns that around

Yet another example of the MSM asking a GOP candidate a gotcha question about some obscure country all the way on the other side of the world.

Do they really expect all candidates to have answers ready about countries like Libya, the Central African Republic, Kirbati, Tonga, Liechtenstein and Bhutan?

“Completely untrue. Mr. Cain was thoughtful, as usual, and there were one tiny pause so he could form his sentence best for people to understand his point. Nonstop chattering, like a broken record, has never been his style. He was not in the least uncomfortable with his answers, sleep or no sleep.”

Common sense apparently is in short supply here. Next we’ll be seeing how he needs to drop out of the race to make room for Newt!

Oh, wait, we’re already seeing this.

Hey Fib Newtons, Cain’s staying in, whether you like it or not. Deal with it.

Completely untrue??? Well, I guess it depends on your definition of a tiny pause. The question ends at 8 seconds, and Cain starts stumbling through an answer at 20 seconds.

Let people judge for themselves if it was a tiny pause, and he wasn't uncomfortable, and if he formed a clear answer after the long pause.

OK, I haven’t gotten to use this zinger yet:

To support Newt would require “a willing suspension of disbelief”

I like Michele Malkin, but let’s face it, she’s trying her best to tear down Cain anyway she can.

Yes, this was not Cain at his best. Granted. It is his weakest area and one in which he has not had the exposure that some of the other candidate have had. That is exactly why he would need someone like Newt on his team. He understands that. I wish Obama did.

He has certainly shown that in those areas where he is privy to information, he knows how to make a decision and successfully lead a team. He’s shown he’s a quick study.

Did you watch the video?

Please watch it before you criticize anyone here for believing the media.

There is NO ONE who wants a CONSERVATIVE candidate more than I do. Sarah Palin was my first choice and now we have to figure out who is going to lead our team.

I hope Cain can rebound, like I said, he is my first choice of the top three, but performances like that are not going to get it done.

So the Tea Party and Conservatives are in favor of Collective Bargaining for Public UNIONS. Cain is.

Since when?

I understand the fatigue factor... I’ve been there myself. However, I wasn’t running for president. I saw the video and I believe my own eyes and ears.

Excuses, I am tired of all of the excuses.

Since apparently it was reported in Wisconsin today, and we all know that the media in wisconsin treats conservatives with tender, loving care!

True, but his performance wasn’t up to American Idol standards, so I guess he sucks.

He doesn’t talk down to people. Herman Cain speaks the people’s language directly to the people. He talks like a real person, not like a robot spouting rhetoric to make them seem smarter than they really are. Rather than spouting rhetoric, Mr. Cain speaks more personally to his audience. And Herman Cain was once a rocket scientist with more than one degree! How many of the others can say that, not that Mr. Cain would.
He is not an actor. He is a very honest and real person, not a robotic politician. I have never seen him stumble.

It is very troubling that so many people on Free Republic are so blind.

you seem to assume that none of us watched the video. I watched the video. The whole thing. He did just fine. I’m really not sure why people are so worried about him.

The press certainly wasn’t in the mood to actually quote him correctly.

You’re taking it out of context.

Oh, look, Here’s Herman back in February at a Madison Tea Party Rally supporting Gov Walker’s Plan

But you had an agenda anyway, so whatever I say won’t make a hill of beans. Believe what you want to believe.

You remind me of a post I’d made back when Peery made his first big gaff during a debare. I said if he can’t think on his feet, he can’t think on his seat, so what would Perry doe with a 3AM call on the Red Phone?

I like Cain a lot. Like I said, I think he would be a reasonably good president. He comes across as the most likable, the most honorable, the most honest of all the candidates.

I just don’t think he is electable anymore.

Morpheus: This is America’s last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the RINO pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the Cain pill - you stay conservative and I show you how great America is.

Cain in a relaxed setting, unguarded, needing a moment to recollect; yet, he ultimately answered correctly.

The bitchin’ here about Cain is pathetic.
