Gingrich Backs Obamacare's Individual Mandate Requiring Health Insurance (May 2011)

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he strongly supports a federal mandate requiring citizens to buy health insurance – a position that has been rejected by many Republicans, including several who likely will be running against him for the Republican presidential nomination.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.

Gregory played a clip of Gingrich speaking during an appearance on Meet the Press in October 1993:

“I am for people, individuals -- exactly like automobile insurance -- individuals having health insurance and being required to have health insurance. And I am prepared to vote for a voucher system which will give individuals, on a sliding scale, a government subsidy so we insure that everyone as individuals have health insurance.”

Gregory asked Gingrich if he would criticize GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney, whose "Romneycare" health program enacted during his time as Governor in Massachusetts mandated that all uninsured purchase health insurance.

Gingrich replied he would not make it an issue in the campaign and said he agreed with key aspects of Romneycare.

"I agree that all of us have a responsibility to pay--help pay for health care," Gingrich said, adding, "I've said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond ..."

All are blemished, but I’ll take the guy who was for the mandate before saying now he’s against it (I hope that’s so!) over the guy who instituted the mandate and now says he is against it.

On this basis, I simply can't support Newt as Presidential candidate. It's not the only reason, but it is a very critical, contemporary issue.

Newt actually supports such Commerce Clause Tyranny?

Just damn. He's as bad as Romney. He talks a good game, but when the rubber hits the road, he's a would-be globalist, socialist Tyrant.

This is to be our choice? Gingrich or Romney?

If so, we are doomed.

Not good. Repeal of ObamaCare in its entirety should be standard for any conservative candidate.

Newt, while a great guy, is a walking time bomb that makes him unelectable. If Newt did not have the baggage, he would make a great candidate. But that baggage is an anchor so heavy that even the best ship can’t move it.

Just picture Newt’s fat derriere up in the air as he burrows behind the cushions on your couch for spare change that might be there to help pay for his Newtacare.

Looks like the options are down to Cain being the first choice, Santorum second, and Bachmann third.

All you have to worry about is:

Is Newt more conservative than Mitt or Barack?

Everything else is wishing!

I won’t vote for “more conservative”. I want a real conservative or no sale.

This is a dealbreaker for me. This one issue decides if we are a command-economy Soviet America, or if we are a capitalist society after all.

Palin would be a vast improvement over Mr. Gingrich.

Newt on healthcare and the unconstitutionality of a mandate from the fed; start at about minute 18 in the long interview from Special Report:

With Cain tanking fast and Gingrich rising and Romney holding steady, only one thought comes to my mind.........WE ARE SCREWED!!!!!

Cain was the last hope of electing a solid conservative, but it looks like the media and the Democrat machine has destroyed him.

Our only hope of ridding ourselves of ObamaReidPelosiCare rests with one man, Justice Anthony Kennedy. We know which four will strike it down (Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia) and which four will vote to uphold it (Ginsburg, Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagen). Kennedy is the swing man. If he upholds then we are screwed. Obama will never repeal it and Romeny of Gingrich should they defeat Obama won’t repeal it either.

Our only hope now is retaking the Senate, because the White House is out of reach, whether it’s Obama or Romney.

Bachmann, Cain or Santorum. That is the only hope for getting a conservative. I don’t want to have to plug my nose again, but its looking more likely we’ll have a repeat of 2008 (and 96, 92, 76). DeMint should have run.
